A group of space-faring scientists wake up in a desert wasteland, far removed from the vibrant (In both the sense of populous and wildlife) metropolis they call home. Soon, they discover themselves assaulted by a group of seemingly intelligent and tool-using apes. Fighting off their attackers, they desperately escape, only to find, to their collective horrors, a giant stone relic of their past that proves that they've been on Earth the whole time, far into the future, and that their civilization has been destroyed in revenge by the now-sentient animals that they had previously made their experiments and slaves.

Granted, that's sort of the interpretation the author wanted us to take after reading it...
