I'd throw in a vote for Lanturn. Ice Beam would probably be useful. Discharge is a useful attack, but Confuse Ray can be so evil... tough call.

While perhaps cheap, Mew and/or Lugia would elicit amusing flavor text. tongue

Psyduck would overlap with Gnaw and Lanturne, and Lanturne already overlaps with Sosuke and Gnaw. Also, I like cute anglerfish more than migraine platypus.

Vote update:

  • Sosuke: 1
  • Yuyuko: 1
  • Kenji: 1
  • Henry: 1
  • Butterfree: 1
  • Lanturne: 2
  • Mew: 1, plus vote for commentary

Today, Mari catches Entei!

(Route 43)

Pokemaniac: ...And so, there I was, my dark hobby discovered by my family, who had gotten together to throw me a surprise birthday party! Let me tell you, they were shocked to discover I was into Pokemon cosplay!

Mari: Is that why you're camping out in the wilds like some kind of ronin trainer?

(LP Note: In this context, a ronin trainer is an unfortunate kid who was "persuaded to go out and become a pokemon trainer", effectively kicked out of the house for whatever reason. Some of these ronin trainers naturally include pokemaniacs, of course, as well as Lasses and Youngsters who failed their exams one too many times. Often, it's disguised with a party and a ceremony of some kind where the kid is given a pokedex, a pokemon, some pokeballs and money, a travel pack, and then is gently but firmly ushered out on a pokemon journey where they never go home. Thankfully, Mari and a few other kids are not that unfortunate.)

Pokemaniac: No, that was after I was caught with my Lecturer's assistant in the back of the computer lab, both of us wearing Nidoran costumes. Anyway, thanks for listening to my story... (wanders off)

Mari: No problem. (Since when did I become a counsellor of any kind?!)

(Suddenly, movement! As the Pokemaniac wanders off-screen, a Wild Entei appears! It studies her, and makes a rumble somewhat like a "Harrumph!")

Mari: You want to play tag and test my strength, huh?

(Entei nods.)

Mari: All right! I'll battle and race you! Go, Sosuke!

(Sosuke burst free of his pokeball! He managed to clip Entei with an Ice Punch!)

Pokedex: it's not very effective.

Mari: I know that already!

Pokedex: Wild Entei was frozen! It fled!

(LP Note: Insert mental image of an ice-encrusted Entei running around Johto. Yes, it did happen.)

Mari: How does a frozen Entei move so fast?

The next few hours were a blur for Mari, who was constantly using her GPS tracker in the Pokegear's Map Function to chase Entei.

(Route 34)

Mari: What's this other marked object on the GPS?

Rustle

Pokedex: Wild Raikou appeared! It appears to want to challenge you as Entei did!

Mari: Oh. Sosuke!

(Sosuke launched a calculated Thunderbolt!)

Pokedex: It wasn't very effective. Raikou fled!

Mari: Almost paralysed him there. Well, let's take another look at the GPS tracke-

Pokedex: Wild Entei appeared!

Mari: Or not. Let's see if this works! Go, Fast Ball!

Click-whoomph!

Nudge.

Mari: It did work!

CRACK

Mari: Or not.

Pokedex: Wild Entei fled!

Mari: While still frozen?

Pokedex: Yes.

More time was spent chasing Entei, until the sun went down and hunger drove Mari to have dinner out in the wilderness pastures of Moomoo Farm.

Farmer: Uh, girl, you can come join us for dinner in our house!

Mari: Thanks, mister!

Days passed. Mari took the time to train a promising Meowth up, and she managed to clip Entei and Raikou a few times each with Meowth's Fakeout attack, gradually weakening them. Meowth soon became a Persian, but not before learning Pay Day.

(LP Note: A Technician Persian holding an Amulet Coin will do decent damage per hit of Payday, and you'll get 10p per level because Amulet Coin affects the cash drop rates! Easy money there while grinding.)

Mari: Mwahahaha, this is going to break my bank account wide open!

Finally, one Monday morning, Mari managed to find the Frozen Entei while Surfing across the pond at Route 35 (to reach the Green Apricorn tree on the other side.)

Mari: What did you do to the Entei anyway, Sosuke? Perfect Freeze it?

(Sosuke shrugs.)

Mari: Anyway, this is the 9th Fastball I'm using here! Here goes nothing!

Click-whoomph! Nudge, nudge, nudge...

Mari: Pleasedon'tbreakplasedon'tbreakpleasedon'tbreak

Ding!

Pokedex: Wild Entei was captured! Logging capture data...

Mari: Yes! That must have been the Strongest Fastball ever! Now for Raikou.

Well it could always be worse.

I'm glad this isn't a popular technique,, otherwise the entire Johto economy would collapse due to inflation!

Also, is that whole ronin trainer thing Fanon, something you made up, or actually canon somewhere?

You know, I realize you could have done so much more with that trainer named Marisa. I'm not sure one "No way, that's impossible" cuts it. (And on the subject of that line, I'd point out the inaccurate pothole, but Walfas doesn't seem to have its own page yet, so whatever.)

Also, Frozen Entei on water SO deserves to have a picture.

You know, you're right there about missing out on having more dialogue from the Cooltrainer Marisa. Anyways, she really did say that in Muffin's comic, at least once.

Also, I am amused by the idea of trying to draw the scene of Mari encountering a Frozen Entei while surfing on Route 35.

I also realize that the concept of Ronin trainers is rather depressing. So many homeless folks wandering the countryside... at least they have pokemon companions and League "pensions" in the form of free rations and healing at pokecenters.

(Route 35 - Goldenrod)

After capturing Entei and collecting the Green Apricorn, Mari went on down to Goldenrod Arcade.

Receptionist: Welcome to the Goldenrod Game Corner!

Mari: I got a bunch of loose change here- (hefts bagful of Pay Day coins) -I want to cash it all in for Arcade chips here.

Receptionist: (whimper) U-uh, sure, Miss Mari! (Whispers to her colleague: Please get the coin-counter warmed up, it'd take HOURS to count that bagful otherwise!)

(Several thousand tokens later)

Mari: All right, time to hit the cabinets and see what retro gems they have! ...Ooooh, There's that old Indy-esque dungeon diver I used to play a whole lot! I remember how harsh it could get.

Hiker: shoo, you're throwing my concentration off- (On-screen, Spelunky Man gets tossed by a Yeti into a Bottomless Pit) Nooooooo! Look what you've done, I was almost at the end of that area!

Mari: Sorry, my bad. (backs away, notices another cool old game) Heeey, I didn't know they still had those old Puzzle Fighter cabinets around!

(Several retro arcade games and a few nostolgia bombs later, Mari moved on to the real meat of the Goldenrod Game Corner, the place where skill is turned into chips and great prizes - the Slot machines.)

Mari: (flexes arms, cracks knuckles) Time to practice my skill! I heard that playing the slots can be real good training for being able to spot the smallest, fastest movements! I should try my hand at seeing if it will come in handy.

(LP Note: Slots in HGSS-JPN are done with a Smeargle theme, where the Smeargle on your top screen will paint an image of what you match up. Hitting the jackpot will let you play a Bonus Round where you match up pictures of Johto's three Starters. Also, read Volume 32 to find out what Mari is talking about.)

Mari: Awesome! Bonus Round time! (I swear those reels seem to be moving slower now, or maybe I'm just geting a little faster.)

(LP Note: it's also a great shame they'll be replacing Slots in all the English Versions with a different minigame, one that is rather like Minesweeper. I'm going to miss the Golem-assisted Slots in the original GSC D:)

(Collecting her winnings, Mari heads over to the prize counter, and studies the list. One of the higher-tier prizes catches her eye.)

Mari: Ooooh, 10,000 chips gets you a powerful TM!

(LP Note: Your pick of Flamethrower, Ice Beam or Thunderbolt, to be precise.)

Mari: Hmmm, I still have a ways to go before I reach that number. It's getting late, I'll come back here to reach for the TM another time.

Sure, Muffin used the Marisa's line, but Walfas started and popularized it.

If I was any good a drawer, I'd make that frozen-Entei-on-water picture myself.

Ah yes, the Game Corner... I always went for the card game in there, actually.

Well, it worked for Platina. Personally, I train my eye-skills by playing at danmaku, lots of it, but whatever works for Mari.

The card game had really slow earnings compared to the slots, once you got the hang of the reels.

(Route 34)

Mari: Hello, uncle!

(LP Note: It's common in some Asian countries to refer to senior citizens as Uncles and Aunties. Interestingly, in Singapore, this title usually only applies to the WWII surivior crowd. Even more interestingly, in the major uniformed groups of the Army, Police, and Civil Defence, it's also common to address (male) Warrant Officers and Staff Seargants as "Encik" ("Uncle" in Malay). Yes, even if you're addressing a young WOII barely 27 years old.)

Daycare Man: Hello, Mari. Come to ask us to raise some pokemon for you? Talk to my wife if that's the case.

(Inside the daycare, Mari meets a few familiar faces.)

Cooltrainer Marisa: Take good care of my Goldeen!

Daycare Woman: All right, dearie.

Mari: Oh! Hi, Marisa! It's been a bit, hasn't it?

Marisa: Mari! It's been what, a few weeks since you went over to our secret beach?

Mari: Yeah, I've been very busy lately.

Marisa: It's been peaceful since you chased the Rockets away from Goldenrod. I've been so bored, I've even stooped to teasing that girl who tends to Ilex Forest Shrine!

Mari: That's not a very nice thing to do.

Marisa: Well, she always naps the afternoons away since she doesn't have much to do out there, so I figured I'd give her a little excitement.

Mari: As long as you cause any major trouble, I guess... How's your training getting along?

Marisa: Not too bad, not too bad. I finally got some 8-badge trainer named Chris from Sinnoh to teach my Seaking Waterfall!

(LP Note: That's my guy from my Diamond save file!)

Mari: Nice!

Marisa: So, come to have Auntie Daycare raise a pokemon for you too?

Mari: Well, I have some cunning plans.

(One party shuffling later)

Mari: Hi Auntie! Can you raise this Gengar and Ditto for me?

(LP Note: Masuda Method attempt, goooooo! I'm breeding a Route 35 Ditto with one of the Gengar Renko imported from my Leaf Green cartridge.)

Daycare Woman: Why, I'd be delighted to help you!

(LP Note: While in the daycare, pokemon gain 1 exp per step you take. Unfortunately, while they can level up without gaining Effort, you have pretty much next-to-no control over what moves they learn/forget while gaining Daycare levels.)

Mari: Thank you!

Marisa: A Ditto, huh... planning on raising some more Gastly?

Mari: Yup! I'm trying to see if pokemon from another region produce any unusual offspring when bred with local pokemon.

Marisa: It won't be as interesting as the time my classmate brought in two pokemon from Hoenn for breeding. I mean, Wailord and Skitty? How is that supposed to work?!

Mari: Hmmm... Nope, my imagination isn't good enough to figure out how.

(Another shuffling of party members later, Mari headed onwards on her trip around Johto, Pokegear open on the GPS app.)

(Route 37)

Pokedex: Wild Raikou appeared!

Mari: Yuyuko, do it!

Pokedex: Yuyuko used Hypnosis - Wild Raikou fell asleep! It fled...

Mari: (groan) Sleep-running?! At least it's more believeable than that Frozen Entei.

Tonight, more Raikou! Also, my CKL-200 earphones broke ;_;

Oh, well, I'll get a replacement soon.

Censorship Advisory: All Magnets in this update are rather... ecchi in content.

(Sunday, Route 37)

Sunny: Hiiiiii!

Mari: Yii! Oh, er, that was a bit of a surprise.

Sunny: Whoops, sorry! I'm Sunny of Sunday!

Mari: One of the Week Siblings?

Sunny: Yep! Here, take this!

(Mari received a Magnet.)

Sunny: This little Magnet will boost the electrical damage inflicted by its holder!

Mari: Not to mention raise the UST level of couples who listen to it.

Encounter!

Mari: That was fast.

Pokedex: Wild Raikou sighted! It is still asleep!

Mari: I wonder if it will work now... Go, Fastball!

Click-Whooooomph! Nudge...

Mari: It does work!

Nudge... ...

Crack!

Pokedex: Raikou fled!

(LP Note: Not pictured - Mari's RAGE face.)

After calming down, Mari got Kenji to fly her high above Johto, GPS Tracker active on her Pokegear.

Mari: There it is!

(Route 40)

Mari: Kenji! Put a dent in it with False Swipe!

The Ninja Duck shot forward, performing his trademark Iaido-styled variation of False Swipe - just in time, too, as the Raikou inexplicably bounded off as the Leek connected.

Mari: C'mon, let's chase it! To the air, Kenji!

This frantic chase continued right until lunch, Mari having managed to whittle Raikou down enough to make capture possible; she had also thrown numerous Fastballs and Quick Balls at Raikou in fruitless attempts to capture it.

Mari: Urrgh, I'm starting to get hungry too, Kenji. One last attempt, then we stop for lunch. Down, over there!

(Route 31)

Mari: C'mon, Quick Ball! Work your turn-1 magic!

Click-whoooooooooomph! Nudge, nudge, nudge...

Mari: Don't break on the last nudge again D:

DING

Mari: Yes!

Pokedex: Raikou has been captured! Logging Capture data... By the way, time-check is 1235.

Mari: Yeah, now's a good time to have our lunch.

Also, I'd for you to bring Mew to the Wifi Club next time, as I want to fill in its entry in my Pokedex and meet it in person.

Don't make the common mistake of underestimating the Elite Four, you'll need to be prepared for anything they can throw at you. Lance sounds like he's going to have some serious firepower at his fingertips, so you'd better be careful!
