Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I hate to say it, but if he says he misses the dog, even if he did kill it, that sounds pretty mitigating. Cautious [tdown] to Marks, although he does sound like he would qualify if it weren't for that.

Now, a new candidate, played by none other than the man, the legend, Robert Frickin' Patrick.

What's the work?: Last Rampage is a 2017 crime film inspired by the 1978 escape of two convicted murderers from Arizona State Penitentiary. Patrick stars as one of these killers, a charismatic man who's busted out with the help of his ignorant sons, along with his cellmate. Little do the man's sons suspect that they've unleashed two human monsters who are looking to "go out in style".

Who is he?/What does he do?: Gary Tison, a charming snake of a man who's convinced his sons Donny, Ricky, and Raymond, as well as his wife, Dorothy, that he was wrongly convicted, is revealed by Sheriff John Cooper to have murdered a police officer, which is why he was incarcerated in the first place. When he is broken out of jail along with his cellmate Randy Greenaway, Tison quickly proves that he lives up to Cooper's description of him as "real evil".

Looking to switch cars, Tison and his gang flag down a car, which they hold up at gunpoint, to find that it is housing a family, including a young girl and an infant. While his sons are oblivious to his intentions when he tells the family to get in their abandoned ride, Tison immediately concludes that he is "not going back to prison", before he and Greenawalt unload an entire clip into the cowering family, killing them without a twinge of remorse, to the boys' horror. When Donny calls Tison out on this, the man simply tells him to "forget about the damn baby". When this doesn't work, he decides to turn on the charm, and tell Donny that it was all Greenawalt's idea, and that they're gonna ditch him as soon as they get the chance.

Tison, his sons, and Greenawalt go on to switch rides again, this time sticking up a honeymooning couple. When Donny begs Tison not to kill them, Tison takes Donny aside, and forces him to watch as he and Greenawalt execute the two, telling Donny that he is the "only law that matters; the law of father over son". He says that if Donny ever questions him again, he will not hesitate to kill him.

When Tison's brother Joe sells the fugitives out to the police, Tison immediately turns around to murder him and his wife. Confronted by cops, Tison forces Donny at gunpoint to drive through the police barricade, getting Donny shot in the process. Looking at his son's bleeding form, Tison realizes for the first time all the hurt he's caused, and how his brutal violence will only infect all those closest to him...

Just kidding. He runs away like a coward, shouting "every man for himself!"

Greenawalt, Ricky, and Raymond are all captured, while Tison flees into the desert, where he promptly drops dead from exposure to the elements.

Freudian Excuse?/Redeeming factors?: Every possible redeeming trait that Tison may attempt to display can be summed up in one word... bullshit.

His Freudian Excuse? His father beat him. Bullshit. This is hardly given a passing mention, and he becomes a worse person than his father ever was, targeting innocents who had nothing to do with this abuse, and in the end is definitely a worse parent than his old man ever was.

His love for his family? Bullshit. He doesn't even mention his wife, and filled both her's and his son's heads with lies their whole lives. He makes it clear that he will not hesitate to kill his own flesh and blood if it suits him, including his sons and his brother. He abandons his sons at the end of the spree, not caring about the fact that he's ruined their lives.

His partnership with Greenawalt? Bullshit. He claims that he would take a bullet for Greenawalt, but he immediately sells the man out to his sons as the one behind the murders of the carjacked family, and ultimately abandons him along with his sons to be arrested. In the end, Tison proves to care about one person and one person alone; himself.

Heinous standard?: Big Bad, sets it. His only other competition is Greenawalt, and I briefly considered proposing him as well. However, Greenawalt isn't anywhere near as developed as Tison is, and it is crystal clear, especially in the carjacking scene, that Tison is calling the shots. So, he passes, easily.

Conclusion?: Easy [tup] for me, but I'll leave it to you guys.

I'll [tup] Tison. I think it HAS been determined that abused people can become abusive, so I'm not as inclined to just forget about this, but if you say it's barely mentioned? Not disqualifying.

[up] Barely given a passing mention, and the only time it is mentioned is when he's trying to invoke a manipulative sympathetic reaction in his sons, thus it's possibly a fabrication. He's claiming that he's not that man, when he's definitely that man.

I'm pretty sure it's Patrick's first, yes.

[tup] I'll take Tison

It's been two weeks since this movie's release (at least in North America; it had already been out in other countries in 2017), so let's check it out.

What Is the Work?

The Death of Stalin is an adaptation of the French graphic novel La mort de Staline, as well as the events surrounding the aftermath of the actual death of Russian dictator Josef Stalin. After the titular dictator’s death via stroke, a Soviet power struggle occurs, with various Russian figureheads fighting for control.

At first I thought no one would count in this movie; it’s a comedy after all (a very dark one at that), and besides, who could be worse than Stalin himself? That is until I checked out the movie’s trope page and saw the movie myself (I work at an indie movie theater and can watch movies there for free, this being one of them). Gentleman, meet one of the most despicable villains I’ve effortposted on this forum.

Who Is he?

Lavrentiy Beria is the head of the NKVD, the Russian secret police, and the main villain of the movie.

What has he done?

Let’s get his general acts out of the way:

  • Beria, while head of the NKVD, used his position to torture and murder whoever he wanted, having his rivals tortured and killed, while his comrades would rather humiliate/demote them. In terms of deaths, he has the highest body count in the movie, having ordered the deaths of thousands with or without Stalin’s behest.
  • He’s a bully, using his position to constantly make fun of people for their looks and figures (despite not being fit himself), while also calling them names.
  • And to top it off, he’s also a serial rapist, having women of various ages brought to him to have sex with, even giving them bouquets in an attempt to make them think it’s consensual. He is seen at one point with a woman who is clearly younger than him, and she does not look happy. He is later revealed to have raped over 347 people (one of which was 7, another being 13).

After a night of hanging out and drinking with Stalin and some members of the Committee, he’s properly introduced torturing a man for names, promising to cut off a body part the longer he has to wait. When a soldier tells him to head to Stalin’s place after his stroke, Beria makes fun of the soldier’s stutter before going, telling a subordinate that when executing someone, to make sure they torture and execute his wife where he can clearly hear her before offing them. He then praises the Union for bringing him “so many devoted wives who fuck like sewing machines”.

When he finds Stalin collapsed on the ground, he looks through his enemy list and burns some of it, replacing it with his own. He secretly sends a soldier to replace Stalin’s previous list, threatening to cut his eyeballs out if he doesn’t. He really wants Stalin dead, desiring to come into power and rule over Russia; but not directly. He guides weak-minded Deputy General Secretary Georgy Malenkov into taking the position as Premier of Russia, planning to use him as a puppet.

Beria then closes off Moscow, has the NKVD take over city security duties from the Soviet Army (which greatly pisses off Field Marshal Zhukov), and replaces Stalin's enemy lists with his own. As Stalin’s corpse is being carried off to the morgue, Beria has his NKVD take all of Stalin’s possessions and either arrest or execute witnesses such as soldiers, or servants. The only one Beria wanted alive was Stalin’s maid, who he planned on raping later.

Having arrested Vyacheslav Molotov’s wife for false treason and having her “killed” many years ago, he has her freed from her cell in order to get Molotov on his side, even taking him off of Stalin’s enemy list (though at the beginning of the movie, he was completely fine with killing him due to being on the list). He later orders the release of every political prisoner and has restrictions on the Russian Orthodox Church loosened, earning Beria a lot of popular support. This isn’t out of the goodwill of his heart; he’s just doing this to gain support from the public. Knowing that Nikita Kruschev is trying to outmaneuver him, he tasks him with preparing Stalin’s funeral in order to occupy him. Taking advantage of the lack of Kruschev, he refuses to allow trains for Stalin’s mourners into Moscow, refusing them to participate in his funeral.

Planning to undermine Beria’s popularity Kruschev secretly orders the trains into Moscow to resume, allowing thousands of mourners into the city. The Soviet soldiers, not being able to stop the large marching crowd, shoot them, killing 1,500 of them. While Beria didn’t order the shooting, he doesn’t care about the deaths, blaming the marchers because “they weren’t supposed to be there”, which greatly infuriates Kruschev, causing him to stage a coup to overthrow Beria. The Committee suggests scapegoating low-level NKVD officers for the massacre; as Beria believes blame attached to security services will tarnish him, he angrily threatens the Committee with incriminating documents he has collected on them. This convinces the other Committee members, sans Malenkov, to join Kruschev in his coup.

Kruschev’s plan is then carried out: ordering soldiers to capture Beria, take his belt off so his hands are occupied with having to keep his pants on, and handcuffing him to a urinal in order to stall (heh) until Malenkov agrees to Kruschev’s coup, which he does after being told by Kruschev that Beria once promised to care for a soldier's mother and ended up strangling her in front of him. While captured, Beria can only make violent threats and pleas of innocence as he’s carried off to a one-sided Kangaroo Court, shot in the head, and his body splashed with gasoline and burned to ashes (fun fact: in real life, he was stripped to his underwear and had a sock jammed in his mouth).

Redeeming Qualities?

None. Every nice thing he does, whether it be attempting to liberalize the Soviet State or freeing political prisoners, is just to hide the fact that he’s a lying scumbag trying to make a good name for himself, and not out of genuine altruism.

Heinousness?

While no one in this movie is a saint, Beria just so happens to be the worst out of everyone, being the only rapist in the movie. Even the entire cast thing he’s terrible, which is why they all work together in the end to have him killed.

While the movie is a comedy, it's also not afraid to showcase how bad these people were, having many scenes that are played very seriously, with Beria's scenes not being an exception.

Conclusion

Easily counts. Despite being in a cast of assholes, he stands out as being the worst of the bunch, with zero redeeming traits to his name. What's disturbing is that the real life Lavrentiy Beria was indeed this bad.

Wait a second, The Death of Stalin is a COMEDY? A comedy with a character who's a rapist, murderer and torturer? Whose crimes are shown on-screen and are portrayed as serious as they are without any comedy? Is it just me or does this sound wrong?

No I’m not saying that Beria isn’t a CM. Quite the contrary. He get’s a [tup] from me. I'm just surprised about the whole thing.
