Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Do Dickson and Mumkhar still count? They certainly have less resources than Zanza and neither of them is presented in a positive light even to this day.

Yeah Dickson and metal face can stay as there below him in power but still bad in there own right.

Well Zanza needs to go (it still hurts when I say that), the other two can stay

[down][down]At least Baldur was only listed for a year and wasnt on the site for nearly ten years like Zanza was. Plus we did get a replacement for him in the guy behind his corruption and all the evil he did in the form of Loptr

[tdown] to Zanza as well as much as it pains me.

I only brought Dickson up because I wanted to make sure that he clearly doesn't know (or care) about his master's origins and his "loyalty" to Zanza is clearly just a facade. A Blood Knight that he is, he just seems to enjoy what he's doing as long as he gets the powers of a god.

Cut Zanza, yeah that hurts to say. Reminds me of why we had to cut Father Balder in Bayonetta 2.

Dickson is not affected, he does enough and Dickson still doesn't have Moral Agency issues, even if he is the disciple of something Made of Evil. That said we could change Dickson's paragraph to make it sound like why he counts and Zanza doesn't anymore.

Well, another cut CM. Though I have argued for one and wrote her entry, I feel like Cipher has a strong probability of being cut from movies 9 and 10.

It seems rare for a CM to keep comitting atrocities over the course of various works in a franchise. Should that happen to her, we may have one big-ass entry to write, possibly the biggest one in the site. Such villains tend to be one-shot deals, killed at the end of their movies and never to be seen again.

How can we condense the writeup of a CM who has a long list of atrocities to his name?

Stefano easily passed, so here's a write-up:

  • The Evil Within 2: Stefano Valentini was a war photographer who became obsessed with capturing the moment of death in his art after photographing a person dying in an explosion. He became a serial killer who would mutilate fashion models and use their bodies as his canvas. After successfully tricking MOBIUS's psyche exams into passing him as sane, he was connected to the virtual STEM town of Union. There he continued his murders until Theodore Wallace contacted him with an offer to give him power in exchange for Stefano kidnapping Lily, who was the CORE of the town. After Lily was removed as the CORE, Union became a nightmare hellscape, and Stefano decided that he wanted to keep her for himself and use her power to help him create his art forever. When Sebastian is sent into Union, he finds that Stefano had been murdering MOBIUS operatives who were sent in before him and freezing them in time at the moment of death. Stefano repeatedly tries to kill Sebastian, leading to a confrontation at a theater where Stefano detonates explosive collars on dozens of Union citizens, musing to himself that he doesn't know how he'll top this latest piece of art. A psychopath to the end, Stefano sees even his own death as just another masterpiece.

Ripperoni Zanza. Knew this was going to happen.

Speaking of Nintendo and CM's... I actually think we should create a subpage for Nintendo CM's... why? Cuz we have seen on multiple occasions that different characters from Nintendo have met and there has to be some sort of connection through the games in universe.

Anyway, just say yes or no. No opinions please...

Th problem is that a few of the major Nintendo franchises like Pokemon already have a page.

So uh on the small, small brighter side, at least we didn't make a sub page for Xeno after Stein got approved considering where back down to 5 thanks to Zanza being cut.

Ok, you know what? Forget it. I'll put my write-ups up when I get to it. In the meantime? Here's a candidate that should spark some interesting discussion. This'll be a long one, folks, and filled with spoilers for the work, so tread lightly...

What's the work?

The Mighty is a 2009 superhero comic by Peter Tomasi and published by Dark Horse.

Alpha One is the world's first and only superhero. Created decades ago through the magic of nuclear radiation and human engineering, Alpha works with the government in the present to save the world from various disasters, and, together with his new federal partner Gabriel Cole, Alpha's about to get into some wacky adventures.

....except....not really....

Who is he?

Alpha One himself is the seeming "benevolent" Superman Expy who works to save the Earth from various disasters and whatnot.

Unfortunately....the truth is far worse.

What has he done?

Centuries ago, Alpha lived on an alien world much like Krypton from Superman fame. His planet running out of resources, Alpha presented an idea to the world's leaders much like Jor-El once did to save their world.

...kill off 10% of the planet's population, primarily "vagrants" and "undesirables." With a smile on his face, Alpha is sure the council will see things his way....until they rightfully freak out and berate him for his psychotic plan. Outraged at their rejection of his "vision," Alpha One brutally murdered several of the council members before he was caught and sentenced to exile.

Sent drifting through space, Alpha eventually crash landed on Earth directly in the middle of a war. When both sides flip and try to shoot him, thinking he's some sort of demon, Alpha quickly discovers that their weapons do not hurt him. He promptly slaughters the hundreds of troops on both sides, realizing that he now has superpowers like that of, you guessed it, Superman.

Spending the next few years observing humanity, Alpha came to a sort of conclusion....humanity was inherently flawed, chaotic, and war-mongering. They needed someone to save them, and bring peace to their world. And who else but him?

But he needed a plan. He alone could not bring order to the Earth. So, Alpha decided he needed more beings like himself. First deciding to try the old fashioned way, Alpha slept with and impregnated a hellton of women....many unwillingly....only to discover that his genes couldn't be passed on to a birth child.

So Alpha chose the next best option. He began kidnapping innocent people, severing their spinal cords so they couldn't fight back, then performing experiments on them with his DNA to hopefully grant them superpowers. He has done this to thousands of people, and those who have survived the operations (Very few) mutate into monstrosities.

Oh, and one of the ways Alpha finds "subjects"? He orchestrates disasters, takes surviving victims from said disasters, then makes the world think they perished so no one will miss them. One such disaster? The flipping Titanic sinking. Alpha punched a hole in its hull so he could kidnap two people to use as test subjects. Douche.

Now the present....Alpha has made himself known to the world as a superhero, hoping to make humankind grow to trust and adore him for the coming "brave new world." In the process, Alpha allies with the government and is appointed a federal "partner" to serve as the sort of "Jimmy Olsen" to his Superman, even having a handy instant-call button implanted in his hand.

Over the years, Alpha continues his "engineer disasters" bit, and goes through partners....fast. Whether they die in combat, ditch him for "unspecified" reasons, or go missing mysteriously, Alpha kicks off the start of the comic by getting a new partner, our protagonist Gabriel Cole. Cole is especially happy for this development, as he has admired Alpha One ever since he saved Cole as a child in the same crash that killed his parents.

Too bad Cole doesn't know that that was one of Alpha's "engineered accidents."

As Cole and Alpha fight muggers and such, they track down the people who killed Alpha's last partner. In a flurry of bullets, the men end up dead due to "ricochets." At least, that's what Alpha claims. In reality, Alpha killed his former partner because he had learned his true nature, and Alpha murdered the group of men who were "suspects" to ensure no one would suspect anything.

Later, Alpha and Cole catch a group of terrorists creating a nuclear device. As Alpha speaks to them in their language, which Cole doesn't understand, we learn that Alpha commissioned the nuke be made. Using the excuse that they were about to open fire, Alpha slaughters the lot of them, tortures the final one to put on a show for Cole when the man is in reality begging to know why Alpha has turned on them, and then burns the man alive.

After sending Cole away, Alpha takes the nuke ad buries it under a baseball field, planning to have it go off during a game so he can "save" everyone there.

During all of their escapades, Alpha slowly opens up more to Cole, referring to him as his "chum", showing him his "Fortress of Solitude," and even revealing that he's an alien (Though leaving that nasty bit about him being exiled).

Later, Alpha kidnaps Cole's wife, makes it look like she died, then uses her in his latest batch of more successful experiments. Around the same time, when a young boy's mother is killed "accidentally" in a shootout, Alpha lures the boy into trusting him then carries him off back to his lair to be experimented on as well.

Eventually, after Cole is clued into Alpha's true nature by one of his Alpha's old partners (Who Alpha then kills), Cole tries to inform the government of Alpha's evil. In a rage at Cole's discovery, Alpha literally blasts through several buildings, shredding people into pieces as he goes, until he finds Cole, uses his heat vision to temporarily damage the man's vocal cords, then carries him to his lair where he showcases his thousands of experiments. Dozens upon dozens of cases are filled with mutated, monstrous people, their faces twisted in agony as Alpha keeps them stocked in capsules lining the walls.

Revealing his true nature, Alpha proclaims that he only wants to save humankind, and that he hates the fact that he can't save everyone at once....so, now that his experiments have finally "succeeded," and he has learned how to grant people superpowers, he is going to create a "master race" of superpowered beings to bring peace to the Earth.....via purging and controlling all humans, as they are a "plague" that needs to be "cleansed." Oh, and to keep his new "master race" in line? Alpha plans to inject a gene into them that will serve as a "kill switch." If any of his new "family" of superbeings tries to go against him? He can kill them at the push of a button.

Unveiling Cole's wife, who survived the experiments and has gained powers, Alpha offers Cole the chance to continue their partnership, with Cole able to live out his life as a god "second only to (Alpha)". Alpha reveals that HE was the one who killed Cole's parents, solely so as to serve as a catalyst so he could shape the boy into eventually becoming his "partner."

Cole seemingly agrees....then uses the opportunity while Alpha's back is turned to release the young boy Alpha recently experimented on. Having overheard Alpha's admission that he arranges accidents, and actually murdered the boy's mother, the child uses his new powers to duel Alpha.

Though Alpha at first demeans the boy for daring to strike his new "father," Alpha ultimately punches the boy hard, sending him crashing into the Earth. Zooming back to Cole, Alpha begins tortrously hurting him, boasting that he's going to draw his death out for all the trouble he's caused him.

Fortunately, Cole manages to use Alpha's experimental machinery to grant himself superpowers. As Alpha overwhelms him, he states that Cole doesn't deserve to live in his "brave new world," and that he's going to enjoy killing him....unfortunately for Alpha, Cole has one final trick up his sleeve, as he uses several bullets filled with Nitrogen, Alpha's one weakness, to weaken the superbeing.

Alpha flees and tries to activate his recovery chambers, however Cole switched out the air tanks with Nitrogen as well at an earlier time, an Alpha is knocked unconscious, at which point Cole and his wife seal him away once again in a containment unit that plunges him into a coma, hopefully to never awaken from again....

Freudian Excuse?

No excuse for why he's like he is.

Redeeming features?

Ok, so a couple things to discuss here that will be the catalyst as to whether or not he counts.

First and foremost, his supposed well-intentioned goals. Alpha claims that he sincerely cares for humanity and that the fact that people die that he can't save weighs heavy on him. He boasts that his final plan will bring peace to the world as a whole, and that he will end all wars and fighting.

Buuuuut....the issue here, as Cole himself points out, is that Alpha wants to be a god and just make humanity his obedient sheep and slaves. Alpha outright proclaims "I am your ALPHA AND OMEGA!"

Though he claims to care for humans and hate when they die, he not only regularly sentences hundreds of them to death so as to experiment on others, but he literally blows the torso off a conpletely innocent man who is just eating with his family in a moment of anger, and never once shows any form of regret or acknowledgement for it, even as he is covered in said man's blood.

Hell, even his own "master race" isn't exempt from this, as, when that young boy tries to fight him in anger for killing his mother, Alpha smashes him into the ground, potentially killing him, and just gets pissed off that Cole "turned one of my children against me!" He's also, you know, gonna inject a kill switch into them to keep them in line, which shows exactly the kind of "friend" he is.

So while Alpha claims to have some care for humanity, this seems to be more as an ideal for him to eventually be the saviour and god of rather than the people who make it up. He acts kind and loving to people, notably helping a boy bury his dead pet, but all of this is presented as him just being a manipulative creep, as that same boy is one he tricks into willingly participating in his nasty experiments.

Next up and a bit more interesting is his relationship with Gabriel Cole. During their partnership, Alpha is a pretty darn cool dude. He hosts dinners for Cole and his wife, flies Cole around and even to the moon to let him see the earth's beauty, takes to calling him "chum," and, even after Cole realises what a monster he is and tries to expose him, Alpha still offers him the chance to live as part of his "master race" alongside his wife. He even claims that he hated making Cole think his wife was dead.

Thing HERE, though? Cole proclaims that Alpha doesn't truly want a "friend" or "partner," he wants an obedient sidekick who he can show off to and who obeys his every whim, as every time Cole tries to go against Alpha, he gets hella pissed off, and Cole would be subject to the same "kill switch" as all others of Alpha's "master race." And in the end, when Alpha and Cole are in their final fight, Alpha gets THIS line:

"Would you like to know something, Gabriel? I'm NOT sorry it came to this. I see now that you don't DESERVE the destiny I shaped for you!"

So......yeah.....kind of hard for me to see this as a genuine friendship....

However, there's one final thing....as he realizes Cole has tricked him and injected Nitrogen into his recovery chambers, Alpha says this: "

"G-Gabriel?! Gabriel! What did you...he...changed the mixture...Nitrogen?! ....heh, good work, chum..."

He then falls into his coma to never be awakened.

We don't SEE him say this, mind, as the panel cuts away from him and we only read what his final words were, so it's hard to tell what this meant. Was he showing a genuine moment of respect to Cole? Was he just realizing that he had been outdone? Did he think that it wouldn't last and that he would wake up again soon? Was he just doing his regular Faux Affably Evil bit? We don't know, but considering everything Alpha has put Cole through, I rather doubt it was genuine respect.

Heinousness?

Worst character, easily. Only other villains are a handful of terrorists or criminals, and Alpha blows them all out of the water with his body count that easily reaches the tens, if not hundreds, of thousands, and his plans to purge and cull humanity of the "weak" and "impure" encompass millions of innocents. His experiments and impregnations don't do much help, either.

Final Verdict?

I'd lean towards Keeper. Alpha claims to care for humanity....even as he kills them by the thousands and subjects them to horrific experiments. He wants to save the world.....by ruling over it as a god and culling those who refuse him. He wants Cole to be his "partner and friend".....yet psychologically and emotionally torments him, wants him to be his loyal slave, and ultimately tries to kill him slowly while proclaiming that he doesn't regret it, and that Cole deserves to be killed.

I could see some disagreeing, of course, so debate is welcome as always.
