Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Guys I just saw the character page for Admiral Akainu of One Piece and it has Even Evil Has Standards and a Pet the Dog moments. Somone explain this ?

  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • During the timeskip, he had a huge battle with Aokiji over who would be the new Fleet Admiral. He won, but spared Aokiji's life.
    • He also surprised everyone by not killing Bonney on the spot when he had an easy chance. The same man that goaded Ace to his death, hunted down Luffy just for being the son of the government's most dangerous enemy and killed a man who just wanted to go home to his family because said man knows a Mook like him would simply get hurt or worse in this battle. He also finds Z to be extreme in his methods.
    • He also calls out the Gorosei for the stunt Doflamingo did involving his faking out of his resignation as the King of Dressrosa and makes it clear that he hates how the Marines are essentially attack dogs for the corrupt Celestial Dragons due to their influence.

  • Pet the Dog:
    • When the time came to have a new Fleet Admiral, it came down to Akainu and Aokiji. Aokiji was utterly against Akainu becoming Fleet Admiral, and opposed his potential promotion any way he could. Eventually the conflict reached a boiling point, with the two engaging in a death match to decide who becomes Fleet Admiral. After a massive battle that lasted for 10 days, Akainu won. Rather than killing him for opposing his ideals and trying to stop him from becoming Fleet Admiral to the point of having a death match for the position, Akainu spared Aokiji and the latter left the Marines.

[up] None of those are redeeming. We never see him spare Aokiji, so we don't know why he did it. Being "disgusted" by Z is non-canon, and being pissed off at the other Marines is nothing but his self-righteous Knight Templar self. He's just angry they aren't as fanatically "pure" as he believes all Marines should be.

'Yes' to Stefano and the Redwall rewrite.

Ok, so I Lied, I have one final candidate for us...from the Korean Thriller Missing (2009). The film tells the story of a young woman named Hyeon-Jeong looking for her missing sister Hyeon-A in a small village...where she finds the man responsible for her sister's vanishing.

Who is he?

Mr. Pan-Gon is the main antagonist of the film and a sadistic Serial Killer. A middle-aged, quiet, and seemingly mild-mannered fellow who lives alone with his mother on a small farm outside of the village, Pan-Gon hides some dark secrets...

What has he done?

Kicking the film off, Pan-Gon approaches a stranded Hyeon-A and her sort-of boyfriend, requesting they assist him in moving some grain packets, as his back has been hurt. As the boyfriend attempts to help, Pan-Gon uses a garrot to try and strangle him, and" when the boyfriend escapes Pan-Gon's grip, Pan-Gon buries a shovel into his head, killing him in front of the horrified Hyeon-A.

Capturing Hyeon-A, Pan-Gon locks her in a dog cage and keeps her in darkness for several hours before forcing her to strip for him. To keep her under control, Pan-Gon threatens to lock her in a cage with his vicious attack dog.

Bathing her with a hose and dressing her up, Pan-Gon has a little "party" with Hyeon-A, where he has her blow out three candles on a cake. He then reveals this is because she is the third girl he has kidnapped. Uh-oh.

After "entertaining" her with....karaoke (I'm not even joking), Pan-Gon gets pissed off when she refuses to applause his "performance," and promptly molests then brutally rapes her.

For the next few days, Pan-Gon repeatedly rapes Hyeon-A until she hardly move, at which point he forces her to give him oral sex. She uses the opportunity to chomp down on his you-know-what.

Outraged, Pan-Gon ties Hyeon-A up, then gleefully uses pliers to yank out all of her teeth as "punishment" for biting him.

As Hyeon-A's sister Hyeon-Jeong comes around investigating, Pan-Gon tries to brush her away as quickly as possible, even as Hyeon-Jeong learns that Pan-Gon's wife mysteriously "ran off" some years ago....riiiiight, I'm SURE that's what happened....

Later, when Hyeon-Jeong continues to snoop around, Pan-Gon captures her, and giddily torments her by claiming her sister is dead, which she refuses to believe. Pan-Gon proclaims that Hyeon-Jeong is going to be his newest "plaything."

Before he can begin tormenting her, Pan-Gon is approached by a neighboring dog trainer, who reveals he knows what Pan-Gon is up to, and demands he sign over his expensive land to him lest he tell the cops.

Though Pan-Gon at first seems to comply, he uses the opportunity when the dog trainer's back is turned to cleave his head with an axe. When a local, amateur police officer shows up and finds a captured Hyeon-Jeong, Pan-Gon buries an axe in his head.

Hyeon-Jeong having used the opportunity to escape her bindings, she attempts to flee while Pan-Gon chases her, boasting the fact that he killed his own father when he was a teenager and has been killing ever since, until she finally manages to recover a pistol and gun him down.

As he lays dying, Pan-Gon is questioned by Hyeon-Jeong as to her sister's location....Pan-Gon starts cackling, and proclaims he already told her. He really did kill her sister. When a horrified Hyeon-Jeong demands to know at least the location of her sister's corpse so she may properly bury her (A BIG deal in Korea and such), Pan-Gon sadistically reveals tha the did to her what he did to all of his victims.

He fed them into a meat grinder. While they were still alive. Then he fed their butchered remains to his chickens. Ouch.

Hyeon-Jeong finishes off the laughing Pan-Gon, then dumps his body into the same meat grinder in a move of revenge, and proceeds to leave the village, intent on restarting her life.

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

Alright, couple things here.

First, Pan-Gon has a dog who, though mainly used as an attack dog, he does seem to treat nicely enough. Thing is? The neighboring dog trainer slashes said dog's throat, and Pan-Gon finds the animal's dead body.

He....is completely indifferent. He focuses solely on the dog trainer blackmailing him, and even continues to act like a smug douche the whole time.

Now, secondly...Pan-Gon has an elderly mother who he keeps fed and alive with medicine, and sleeps in the same room as. Issue here? His mother wants to die. She obviously hates her son, tries to resist his feeding and medicating her, and indeed dies of old age at the end of the film while seemingly trying to call the police on him for being a lunatic, and Pan-Gon's one scene of dialogue with her consists of him mocking her state, and smugly proclaiming "You will never die. You have to stay alive and see how HAPPY your son's life is!"

So, I don't really see this as redeeming. Pan-Gon seems to be keeping his mother alive just to mock her state, and while there might be some weird psychological reason for this, the film doesn't actually give us a reason for it.

Besides these? Nothing to note. Pan-Gon is a sadistic madman who takes deep pleasure in what he's doing, and even calls himself a "nice guy" who will be "kind" to the women he kidnaps if they do as he says, but this is complete BS, and he's such a psychotic loose cannon that what he constitutes as "doing what he says" can flip on a dime.

Heinousness?

Worst character in-story. The dog trainer's a prick who kills Pan-Gon's dog and agrees to help him murder Hyeon-Jeong in exchange for his land, but he's obviously hesitant about it and isn't close to Pan-Gon in evil. The end of the film implies that this other old, creepy man is also a serial killer, but it's nothing more than an implication.

Overall, kills three women via meat grinder after keeping them as torture and sex toys, murders three men throughout the film to cover up his crimes, tries to rape then kill Hyeon-Jeong, and makes every indication that he's going to continue after.

Final Verdict?

I'd lean Keeper.

[tup] Stefano, Pan-Gon, and the Gulo rewrite. And the stuff Akainu is too ambiguous to be genuinely mitigating. We don't know why he spared Aokiji or Bonney and the stuff with the Gorosei is purely about making the Marines look bad. I don't even necessarily agree that he counts (no, I'm not arguing to cut him) but none of those examples really fit.

@Ravok & Tommyfresh: Ah ok thanks. I was just curious about him as I was playing the villains in J stars recently and decided to check them out and got confused by this stuff on admiral Akainu 's page.

@Elfen: It sucks sometimes but for awful villains like Ruvik, Castor troy and millenuim who love somone it doesn't matter how bad they are, they can never count. The only way they'd count is if they tossed that love away like Ego or Zoom or didn't care anymore as that love faded away like Dio Brando or J'son.

@miraculous Or like Souichi Tomoe who used to love his daughter and his wife in the flashbacks I guess? But didn't care for them in the present day to the point he abused his own daughter for experiment purposes.....Or Griffith is also a good example too, He used to care for his subordinates, but he threw his redeeming qualities out of window after.............Well, you know.

Alright, having (unfortunately) read Nemesis, I can say the villain (whose series is a total of four issues) certainly does not need a 322-word writeup. Here's my proposed rewrite:

  • Nemesis: The title character is a wealthy sociopath who paid to become a supervillain. Nemesis travels around the world, slaughtering innocents and targeting honest police chiefs for fun. Choosing inspector Blake Morrow as his next target, Nemesis terrorizes the United States: crashing a plane into Washington; gassing the Pentagon to kidnap the President; and blowing up a prison that detains him after letting himself get caught. To further torment Blake, Nemesis inseminates his daughter with his son's sperm and triggering her womb to collapse if an abortion is attempted. Confronted by Blake, Nemesis reveals he's strapped bombs to both the President and Blake's wife and ecstatically tries to force the inspector to choose who will die.

Furthermore, I'd strongly argue against labeling him a Villain Protagonist. Blake gets a lot of screentime.

[down] Both are equally good, imo

I found a something for the Quotes page for Drake Merwin.

Drake: "Do you have any idea how many shrinks have tried their words on me? You think you can do better? It has to be some sickness, some syndrome, right? Put a label on it and everything will be all better. Are you as clueless as the rest of them, Astrid? It's simple. Here it is, here's the answer, Astrid the Genius: it's fun to hurt people. It's such... it's such joy, Astrid. Such joy realizing that all the power is yours, and all the fear and pain is right there, in your victim. Come on, smart girl, you know what it's called. You know the word for it. Come on, say it."
Astrid: "Evil."
Drake: "Evil! There you go. Good for you."
