Go To

This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

You were changing all the British spelling on the pages you edited to American spellings in violation of American and Commonwealth Spellings.

^ Ah, jeez. Now I feel like a total dong. I recently installed a word-replacer extension in Chrome (it's a personal preference thing for me). It's only supposed to make changes to the things I SEE, not the things I POST, or that's what I thought at least, but obviously I was wrong.

Sorry for the hassle. I can definitely disable the extension if you're willing to give me my editing privileges back so that it doesn't happen again.

Word-replace scripts of all kinds are a pretty big no-no on this site for that very reason. Because it affects the edit box as well as the actual page.

Yeah. People don't tend to realise what when they open an edit window the entire text in the box will be vulnerable to all of the extensions one might have that deal with text. Changing from one spelling convention to another is quite mild, compared to some of the stuff we've seen.

Go to the settings of that extension and install tvtropes.org as an exception. Alternatively, just turn the extension off altogether whenever you're thinking of editing the Wiki. (I'd go with the first option - it's too easy to do a quick edit without remembering to turn it off.)

I'm lifting your suspension now that we've had this talk. I trust that there won't be any more issues with this.

Will I ever get unmuted from OTC?

sad

I'd like to go argue there again, if that's permitted. Maybe some advice on how to be less inflammatory? Or topics to avoid?

I honestly don't feel like the mute was too well-earned. All I did was espouse non-Liberal ideas and at the behest of a handful of users I was deemed a troll for it, then had the Right-wing declared "misinformed" and myself along with it.

That's really, really, really not a very pro-speech or pro-freespeech action.

If there's a way I can improve, I'll do it, but I still would be lying if I didn't say I felt peeved that I was basically muted for the reason "Your beliefs aren't progressive enough."

I never even said one offensive or harmful or ad-hominemming comment, though was met with several (called a right-winged lunatic closeminded bigoted troll) and said comments went unpunished and unthumped. But I get singled out for a mute?

If the situation can't be resolved, I'd like a more detailed explanation of what happened and why. It's been on my mind whilst browsing here for a few days, and the idea that mods may mute and ban at their discretion simply because they disagree with a user's beliefs scares me.

If this was not the reason I was muted... Well, this is why I'd like a better explanation of the situation, please.

I was banned twice in total.

First time was my fault, but I think the second time was a big misunderstanding.

It wasn't that your ideas were non-liberal. It's that you were linking to white supremacist sites and defending the KKK lynching black people.

1. It was a single link, and even then I had no idea it was a white supremacist site. The source I found mentioned nothing about that. This might be where the misunderstanding arose.

2. I never said that either. I said any and all racist organizations, white or black or otherwise, should be punished for any violent acts they commit. This being said, they still have a right to say what they wish to say. In the U.S., all speech, including hate speech (except face-to-face direct inflammatory assault), is protected by the Constitution. Whether or not you agree with them, all hate groups in the States have a right to freedom of speech. I never defended violent action, however, whatsoever, from any group ever. I made this explicitly clear in almost every related post. Read through them and you'll see I mention time and again that no action from any racist group of any race of any nation of any time period should be unpunished. Again, a misunderstanding.

In the words of xkcd:

Public Service Announcement: The Right to Free Speech means the government can't arrest you for what you say. It doesn't mean that anyone else has to listen to your bullshit, or host you while you share it. The 1st amendment doesn't shield you from criticism or consequences. If you're yelled at, boycotted, have your show cancelled, or get banned from an Internet community, your free speech rights aren't being violated. It's just that the people listening think you're an asshole, and they're showing you the door.

Someone once said that defending a position by citing free speech is sort of the ultimate concession; you're saying that the most compelling thing you can say for your position is that it's not literally illegal to express.

Except I wasn't condoning hate groups or expressing hate speech myself. You're again misunderstanding that.

If I came here supporting the Klan or the Black Panthers or the Weather Underground and violently attacking other users, I couldn't use free speech for that.

However, I myself am of course not a Klanswoman, a Panther, or an Undergrounder.

I was purely referring to the real world. Speech issues of hate groups in real life came up, and I stated that in real life they're protected under the Constitution.

I myself did not express any such sentiments personally nor further the speech of any hate groups. It was a completely separate topic about whether or not real-life hate speech is guarded by the First Amendment.

Perhaps it was falsely assumed by proxy by some users that I was expressing my beliefs there, but that wasn't the case. I never said I agreed with those groups, but in a real-world, real-society sense, I stated that they had rights to hate speech. Hate speech can of course get you judged, yelled at, attacked, applauded, cheered, all depending on the crowd, but it remains legal.

Legality was the issue, not the groups themselves or hate speech itself.

I'm not sure what you're getting at, then.

Why didn't people argue that in the thread if that's what they believe? I wasn't breaking any rules or harassing anyone, I was stating they're protected under free speech. Why ban me when they could've just made the argument that I was wrong?

Now it almost seems as if I was banned because it was believed I was wrong about free speech and its implications and practices? Still very confusing.

@Ominae: You seem to have issues with Zero Context Examples especially on character pages. In addition you keep writing examples where the explanations have nothing to do with the trope. Also you made a terribly formatted character page.

Also on Characters. The Presidents Last Bang you didn't add any descriptions to any of the characters leaving the page incomplete and riddled with ZC Es.

Well, color me surprised. Did I make one too many ZC Es in a YKTTW? Did I make one too many entries in a trope page without an equivalent entry in the works page, or vice-versa?
