This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Hello. I wanted to say that since it’s been a long time since I was suspended, I would like to ask for my editing privileges to be returned to me. I believe I know what happened to be caught like this. • From what I gather, what caused me to be suspended was a simple misunderstanding of how to properly work the system. “Markup”, also used on Wikia, is rather complex and I couldn’t always get an edit properly done. With the “embedding” issues that stacked up, this was the cause. It was difficult to properly organize one topic with another because of what sort of topics are similar and which ones are totally unrelated, and from the fact that I would accidentally have symbols stuck in the wrong format. This type of strange coding is a little overwhelming, but I intend to read into whatever guides are available before trying my hand again. • Another problem is that I didn’t take enough time to plan how my edits would go, which is probably what led to these problems as well. Unfortunately, when an idea comes to mind about something, I grow too excited and rush to the source. This happens to me a lot in real life – especially with things like game maps or drawings. Patience is a short supply for me, and I’ve been having to teach myself into waiting on good things, which is hard on its own sometimes. • As for describing tropes and backstories, that’s one of my high points. I’m a very good visual writer and can type much more fluently than speaking. So there’s no issue there.

So in short, I simply had a misunderstanding over not being able to properly use a certain type of script, and having trouble organizing topics in each section. If and when I am allowed back into your trust, I’ll try reading up on what to do first. Heck, even some links to the necessary materials would suffice. Again, I’m sorry for making this mistake. Rest assured that I would never intend to troll, spam, blank, or hack a reference site that has a sense of humor. If I have a personal problem with a material that others don’t (say, I hate the film “Pixels” because it’s scary, not because of Adam Sandler), I leave it in my journal and don’t let it interfere with others. This is one of my most recent emotional turnarounds. In fact, I read some of the posts on this thread before posting this, so I’m aware of the risks, somewhat. Regardless, You can trust me.

Thank you again.

Hi there! I just noticed that I got suspended and as I only had one edit under my belt on this account, I can explain.

I was attempting to remove an old page I did, "Asherah," from the Darth Wiki/Unpublished Works because it's no longer the correct title of the work and I wanted to start over. Unfortunately I should have realized that this would look like vandalism.

If it helps, when I first made that page my account was The Ankylosaurus, which is an older/more embarrassing username so I recreated for a fresh start. Sorry about any confusion this caused, and I would really appreciate getting editing privileges back, thanks!

@Septimus Heap I was about to say that you were contradicting yourself by saying that it's not the staff's job to clean up This Troper from such pages when I was sure you said otherwise several posts back, however, finding the specific post again, I am assured that you didn't:

"It is true that removing This Troper is not a completed task and that these pages do not get much attention."

You did not mention at any point that the task was that of the staff, so I apologize for that misunderstanding.

Still, if it's up to the community to keep This Troper off the wiki on all pages, yet it's still so prelevant on these, and you just said yourself that it's an "all-too-common mistake," it seems to me the community isn't entirely sure on the matter either. Perhaps it's only recently become a big issue because the staff is finally fed up with it? Yes, I'll go along with you that I assumed it was acceptable because of how widespread it is, but that's just it: there has to be a reason the problem is so widespread, and again, I say the reason is because the rule itself on its respective page is vague and that the enforcement of the rule has been inconsistent.

You're right, the This Troper page makes no exceptions, and it's not an overly complicated statement, but it's its simplicity that makes the statement vague, and again, it would appear the community is also mixed up on it as well if the problem is a widespread one that isn't being fixed by the community. Maybe the community could use a refresher in this area to curb this widespread problem to ensure that it won't keep happening.

I honestly do not understand how I got suspended and it honestly sort of scares me that I got suspended. Could somebody please try and explain to me what it was I did to get me suspended so I know to not do it again?

Thank you for your time and help. From, Pikatwig.

Did I get suspended because I forgot to Index the pages? If that's it I'll be more careful from now on but I remember that one page couldn't be indexed before, but I forget what. I think it might've been a Haiku page so I don't know what to do about that. But anyways, can someone tell me exactly what I did wrong?

~Sark0TAG: Greetings. You indeed have problems with Example Indentation in Trope Lists; we do not use lone subbullets. And you don't put an example from a work under another example from the same work, as you did on White Void Room and Ominous Visual Glitch.

~sigilstar: Aye, the Cut List is the place to remove pages. Also, I must say, your address data don't match these of The Ankylosaurus very well.

~Justanotherrandomlurker: Apart from This Troper, you do understand Example Indentation in Trope Lists, How Indexing Works and Conversation in the Main Page? You have a mass of notifications on these things.

~Pikatwig and ~Woofthe Wolfie: You both have problems with indexing pages you create, despite warnings. Yes, the current index system sucks but that's the point where one asks for help, generally.

So what do I do to get unsuspended? Swear that I'll index pages more often because I will if that's what it takes. I just really need to start editing Acceleracers again. Those pages are messed up and bare-boned. So do I just have to wait a few days?

I was recently banned for making a small error. I had the "Millennial to Snake People" extension on my computer, which automatically changes "Great Recession" to "Time of Shedding and Cold Rocks". Especially in edit windows.

Whoops.

In any case, I turned off the extension and I'm hoping to be allowed to edit again soon.

I don't really know how indexing works... but I'll try and figure it out if it'll help me get un blocked from this site.

So, have I regained your trust? I'm nervous, you know. I don't want any trouble here, it was a simple accident and I know that I must read up on what to do about proper editing and be aware about thinking before making an edit. About the edit issue on those two mentioned pages though, I was confused about whether Garry's Mod and Half-Life 2 were the same game or not, so I didn't know which ones went where. Just had to explain that part.

~WooftheWolfie and ~Pikatwig: Unsuspended now. Remember to index your pages and ask for help if you have problems.

~Racso: I really must ask where all these things come from. Really stupid for the most part. Unsuspended on condition that you don't run such a thing again.

~Sark0TAG: Remember that examples are bulleted like this:

  • Trope:
    • First example.
    • Second example.

  • Work:
    • First example.
    • Second example.

Wait a minute. If the disgraces section of the pantheon was made which has the sole purpose of criticizing horrible characters then why can't I put any criticisms against the Sword of Truth characters on the pages?

~Sark0TAG: Suspension lifted. Remember the editing rules.

~Jack Johnson: Please do not use this thread to ask for edits. You were banned for repeated page blanking, which was taken as vandalism.

~ilniaj: Not the thread for a policy discussion, please. Also, that page was locked to put a stop to that behaviour.

@Deadbeatloser22

Only twice actually. The first time was because a selectively oblivious troper claimed that criticism of the series is bashing despite acknowledging the Protagonist-Centered Morality of the series on the Fridge page. The second time was because I put Terry's nickname on a bunch of pages which I thought was okay because the literature pages for fan nickname contained insulting nicknames towards Stephanie Meyer and Christopher Paolini.

@Septimus Heap Yes on Example Indentation In Trope Lists, as Fighteer pointed out mistakes I've made in the department; yes on How Indexing Works - admittedly that did take me a long time to figure out how, exactly, indexing works, but it's been within the last year or so (I believe) that I finally figured it out, and have been making sure to index every new work page I've created (as well as going back and indexing ones that I didn't previously). No on Conversation In The Main Page; I see why it would be a problem, and I'm not denying that I have been guilty of it in the past, but I cannot recall any specific examples of doing that at the moment.

~johnnyfog: Why are you arbitrarily replacing quotes? How many times do we need to have this conversation?

~Justanotherrandomlurker: I'd like to think that we've adequately hashed all these issues out, but I have to caution you that we won't tolerate future problems. Is that clearly understood? Because if we have to call you in again for any of them, it'll be the end.

~Ilniaj: Your perverted idea of what constitutes facts is exactly the problem. We cannot and will not tolerate it any further. Goodbye.

I guess I just didn't realize the page quote was worthy of a page discussion. Next time I'll take it into account...

Edit: Oh, I see that's what the General Quote Discussion thread is for. Gotcha.

@Fighteer That's why I'm considering leaving TV Tropes altogether (or at least, no longer contributing), because I feel in spite of my best efforts to be mindful of the rules that are firmly established (again, it doesn't help that some rules seem to inconsistent) that somehow the least little infraction is enough to land me in hot water. I admit I've made mistakes in the past, particularly my earlier years, and I've tried to learn from them, but apparently they also serve as grounds for dredging up the past (as Septimus Heap pointed out, I had problems with indexing in the past, and as I explained, it took me a long time to actually figure out how it all worked, and I've since then made the necessary corrections, but it apparently was still an offense with you guys).

I mean, as strict as you guys have gotten just since I've been here, you really make a guy feel like he can't do anything right, and it's gotten to the point where I'm scared if I contribute anything to this wiki anymore, it'll mean my butt, and you just spelled it out loud and clear that if I do end up making one more mistake, that's the end of it. Not exactly a confidence booster.

So, yeah, if this issue is finally squared away, I may stick around to help contribute to new YKTTW drafts, or poke around Troperville, but I don't feel like I'll continue contributing to the wiki much anymore; my next edit could be my last.

Is there any particular reason why you thought we'd be interested in content pertaining to hardcore pornography in the YKTTW for "Red Sock in the Laundry", or elsewhere on the wiki such as Main.Charlie And The Chocolate Parody?
