Casters are the siege class Servants. They're supposed to use Territory Creation to build themselves a magic fortress that the other Servants can attempt to throw themselves at futilely.
Assassins aren't combat Servants. They're supposed to go after Masters. Both classes presumably rely more on tricks and strategy than Saber or Berserker which are essentially brute force options.
Casters also tend to have pretty ridiculous Noble Phantasms. Rule Breaker can steal other Servants, Prelati's Spellbook is an army generator, Marchen Meines Lebens can essentially turn someone into a god, The Queen's Glass Game can (sort of) rewind time, and Golem Keter Malkuth is basically immortal.

So, I suppose that it's a good thing that the idea I've had floating around in my head for a fic with Medea as the protag's Servant has a bit of a spy thriller twist to it.

How do you shift ley lines using only explosives? Kiritsugu would have found a way.
Casters' workshops are more like an entire fortress that isn't even easy to get inside in the first place. Kayneth's hotel has disadvantage of being a public place instead of a solitary spot that might or might not in a different dimension all together. Let us see just how Kiritsugu will try to bomb the foundation of the Hanging Garden.

Normal disdain for Madoka characters aside, were any of them really designed with that in mind? Maybe Homura.
I say that, but then I look at Saber and wonder why people think she's particularly cool. She loses a ton, never gets her way and gets treated like shit a ton in the anime most people are familiar with.

Iron Woobie is a thing. Maybe that combined with her steadfastly upholding her Knight in Shining Armor and Lady of War aspects in spite of all the shit she gets is what appeals to enough fans that she gets #4 in that list.

Hey, Homura vs Walpurgasnacht was awesome and there's a fight scene in The Rebellion Story involving Homura that's really freaking cool.
Sure, Ryougi Shiki is way more awesome in the sense they likely meant, as is Mikasa Ackerman, but it would have been nice to see at least Homura low on the list.
As for your question, maybe they're remembering Fate/Zero where she does plenty awesome things or there's just more fans of the VN than we know.

Of course there might be many Fate/stay Night fans who don't access this thread. I, for example, am a Fate fan for a long time, but decided not joining this thread before finishing Tsukihime. Having all Type-Moon in a single thread can drive people away to avoid spoilers.
