Uzumaki: oh god the horror

Uzumaki is the first manga I've read and, for some reason, I now want to hide every spiral shape in my apartment.

My favorite chapters, I think, would be "The Scar" (oh god Eye Scream to the extreme) and "Mosquitos" (Fetus Terrible taken to Over Nine Thousand). I think this trascends Body Horror. It's become High Octane Body Horror.

And now I kinda want to read the other manga by Junji Ito.

Heheheh.

I kind of want to read Tomie, but not Gyo. Seems more psychological I guess.

Oh, and I've also read The Enigma of Amigara Fault.

Must be an interesting first manga for you.

I wasn't that scared (worth noting that I'm a bit jaded). Except for that one lady whose faced turned into an inward spiral/black hole. That was effed up.

The buried city was pretty eerie.

Yeah. I've seen a few anime before, but was always weary about manga just because of the whole right-to-left thing (I know, petty, but I like reading things left to right). But the guy at my comic shop recommended this and now I'm scarred for life.

Don't forget the reverse Caesarian. And when they had to eat snail-person meat in order to avoid starvation. And when Chie was trapped by the rowhouse construction. And...

kekeke. I Love cinnamon rolls. kekeke.

Anyways, the mosquitoes chapter is definitely the creepiest.

I'll give you disturbing but it really wasn't all that scary if you ask me.

I could never quite get into this one; it gave me the feeling that the story was all dressed up with nowhere to go, if that makes sense. Ito came up with a bunch of bizarre, creepy ideas and then just threw them all at us without bothering to fashion any kind of real story out of it. In particular, everyone's way too accepting of all the weird crap that's happening, which really made it hard to identify with them.

I liked Uzumaki, or at least the first half, about at the point of the mosquitoes, it kinda lost its hypnotic hold on me. If I recall the events correctly, it was about then things really started spinning out of control, pun not intended. I did read it all, and although I didn't exactly feel that the ending was satisfying, I just have to ask myself "what WOULD be a satisfying end to all of that?" 'cause, I mean, seriously, how on earth do you wrap a series like that up? Anyway, not quite as awesome as Enigma in my book, but decent.

Kind of agree with the "first volume was good but it kinda goes downhill from there." Liked the ending and the jokes he had at the end of each volume, but seriously what was Ito thinking when he had people who were using tornados to fly?

And it just gets better from there!

Hey, neat. This actually has an official English release. I need to check it out.

I've found increasingly these days that manga I would not expect to have official releases do in fact have official releases. I suppose this is the kind of thing you should expect when the people who decide which anime to localize are completely different from the ones who decide which manga to localize.

See you in the discussion pages.

Here's the thing about Uzumaki, you see, i am not a person who is easily scared, and i have never even read this manga. But the freaking wikipedia description was enough to give me two days of Spiralphobia. That said, if you read this topic and haven't read the manga. DON'T

I've read pretty much all of Junji Ito's works, but the only thing that REALLY freaked me out was the first two chapters of Uzumaki. I think it's because, at that point, it hasn't gone apocalypse-like yet and the psychological aspects of it scare me shitless. After reading those two, I was literally shaking.

However, Tomie, the whole Museum of Terror, Flesh-coloured Terror (I think, not sure about that name), Enigma of blah blah (no offence or anything, but I really don't remember the names) are also really good, although not as HOLYCRAPWHATWASTHAT as Uzumaki. Oh, and Gyo's just gross.

Of course, that's just my opinion, heh.

Just read it. Not that scary. The last chapter left a lot to be desired.

lol necro

Enigma of Amigara Fault was much more psychological.

Last chapter wasn't that scary for me, more of a Tear Jerker.

Yeah, Uzumaki gets kind of weak towards the end. Gyo is the other way around, but it ends up with lots of Fridge Logic issues.

The placenta chapter was pretty creepy, but for me the snails were the worst part. 'Specially that guy who spirals into one while eating it and...and yeah...

Also, Chie being absorbed into the mass of people in the spiraling houses. /shudder
