Hypocrite Pre-TRS

There has been renewed interest in taking Hypocrite to TRS because its usage has been consistently problematic for years. A sandbox for wick checking it has been set up: Sandbox.Hypocrite Wick Check.

I have loaded it up with a list of wicks, but we might want to discuss sorting, etcetera. as well as the angle to take in the TRS.

Ha, you don't have to take from the list. I just figured 14k would be a lot of up-and-down scrolling, and it might help people who have never done a wick check before come here from the ATT to have some ready wicks.

The only folder suggestion I have besides ZCE is in-universe. I'm not sure at all where to begin with "they say something and then do another thing" because it's a reaaally wide range of words and actions.

Well, I know there's an issue with complaining.

For Recap.Jackie Chan Adventures S 2 E 25 The New Atlantis, does it still count when it seems to be "accused of being a hypocrite, but might not actually be one due to the unfair conflating of circumstances?"

• Hypocrite: Valmont makes light of Tohru holding a grudge over last season, saying Jackie has him doing the exact same thing: fighting a demon. Thou to be fair Chan isn't making Tohru face her alone, something Valmount has overlooked.

I think the problem with that entry is actually the Justifying Edit. I don't know the work but it reads more like it's the viewer who disagrees and not the work itself. We could make a separate category for "Natter/conversation".

So, are we good with the categories or do we still need more discussion?

So, in-universe, ZCE, complaining, and natter/conversation? I think that's enough to start with.

I personally am starting to think simply being a hypocrite is chairs. Most entries boil down to “character is a hypocrite” which isn’t a trope.

I've always had the sense that this page existed more to be an alternative Pothole Magnet to Hypocritical Humor than anything else.

This discussion included a previously completed wick check here (146 wicks starting on the 30th May 2020).

The trope never quite made it to TRS that time, but it might be worth comparing the results of this new wick check with the results of the previous one, since it's still available.

I think there is a real character type associated with this trope, and for it I would suggest a rename to something like Pious Hypocrite. Of course, there's a significant (but hardly total) overlap between that concept and Holier Than Thou.

Isn't "pious" about religiousness though?

Anyway, we can't really discuss renames until we know what we're dealing with. I'll sort some wicks tonight.

I don't see it as chairs because it's an indication of It's All About Me, but it could be split further into Hypocrisy Callout, Its Okay When I Do It and Conveniently Switching Rhethorics.
