Misused: Hilarity Ensues

Another vote for "conform to the misuse, but move the valid examples elsewhere." Because anything else is a monumental undertaking.

Yeah, we still have to go through those wicks, but it's less work moving the currently-valid examples elsewhere since there's so few of them. It's faster to check all wicks and delete a handful, over checking all wicks and deleting most of them.

Is the misused form ("Something Funny Happens") a trope worth having and is it not already covered by other tropes?

No, it'll be turned into a redirect to Played for Laughs.

Funny Moments isn't a trope and can't just be wicked to willy-nilly, so no, not okay with that. What people use Hilarity Ensues for (things happen that are intentionally funny) is things being Played for Laughs. Not every example of Hilarity Ensues actually does make the audience laugh, it's more about things being played for comedy.

Agree with making it a redirect to Played for Laughs.

Do we need a crowner? Or do we have consensus? I think for something this major we'll need a crowner and technically multiple ideas were discussed.

I don't know how to make crowners, but if we made one, would the options be:

• Make the name a redirect to Played for Laughs and create a new trope for the current definition.
• Do a cleanup but don't change anything.
• Rename the trope and make Hilarity Ensues a disambig?

Would they be the options on the hypothetical crowner?

I can't think of any other options. I still think redirecting to Played for Laughs and moving the proper definition elsewhere would be the easiest, since that's what was done with Incredibly Lame Pun (which now redirects to Pun instead of Lame Pun Reaction, similarly to Cosmic Horror redirecting to Eldritch Abomination instead of Cosmic Horror Story) and Lame Pun Reaction.

Hmm... could we use Hilarity Ensues as the name for "here's the setup for a funny scenario", and make a new trope for meaning it's supposed to have? We already have "setup tropes" like High Concept.

It's possible, but we could also make your idea into another trope with a different name. Most usage is just "funny thing happens", so personally I think redirecting it to Played for Laughs and splitting the other concepts off as new tropes with new names would just be a little easier.

i've always remembered it as being linked to for "strange and improbable things follow this wAcKy setup" more than "this is a thing that is meant to be funny". taking the name of the trope at face value, that's honestly its most intuitive meaning, even though it's meant as a parallel to Reality Ensues. a rename would definitely be prudent

The crowner is at 19:3. I think it's safe to call, though if we want to make one more ATT announcement that's fine too.

As for , aren't those two definitions pretty much the same? These Hilarity Ensues examples you're referring to are events that get Played for Laughs, and I don't think it's a distinction that's worth two different tropes.

Considering what a big deal this trope is, I think another ATT announcement is probably best.

I'll move the current page to a sandbox and make the redirect.

Edit: The examples and description are now on Sandbox.Hilarity Ensues if anyone wants to look through them when making a TLP draft, but either way, Main.Hilarity Ensues is now a redirect to Played for Laughs.

Another edit: If nobody steps up to sponsor the TLP draft (I lack both the TLP knowhow and the confidence to do it myself), then the original definition of Hilarity Ensues can be added to the Trope Idea Salvage Yard along with a link to this thread (for the sake of salvaging wicks from the wick check) and Sandbox.Hilarity Ensues.
