The trope description, sounds like it should be called Randomly Generated Equipment, which we don't seem to have a trope for.

But the title and the titles of its redirects seem like the laconic should be "Randomly Generated Items, to be looted by adventurers" or something, in the general.

I want to split this between RGE and this. Yes, or no?

70 wicks, 954 inbounds.

And also change Loot and Random Loot from redirects to other things.

Side-note: What is Plunder? It's the thing Loot redirected to before this.

What you are thinking of is Random Drop which already exists.

[up] - Random Drop is for when loot is dropped by enemies.

This trope seems to be "When I get stuff, what I get is randomly chosen."

I want to split that into "When I get stuff, what I get is randomly chosen." and "When I get a piece of equipment, I know what the base item, is, but what their stats are, is randomly chosen."

Having a chance of getting Potions and Swords, vs. knowing you'll get a Bronze Sword, but not knowing if it'll be sharp, enchanted, etc.

That is something I don't think needs to be split off from this, as in this trope shouldn't need to be changed.

At most you can YKTTW a Random Enchants or Random Stats trope with a possible Random Stats Reroll trope for those games that let you reroll the stats of said gear into something equal but also random like Star Trek Online's pretty new re-engineering system and Diablo 3's Enchanting from the Mystic.

I think I remember this one from YKTTW, actually. The intended concept of the trope is that the game, rather than picking Random Drops from a premade loot table, uses procedural generation to invent Random Drops during play from a table of possible characteristics.

For example, rather than having a monster drop a Flaming Sword, a Bear Ass, or a Laser Blade, it has an algorithm that could:

  • pick a sword
  • pick a shield
    • give the shield defense against fire OR
    • give the shield defense against lasers
All of which happens without the devs having actually created specific file entries for a Flaming Sword or laser-blocking shield.

This trope is about the items being randomly generated, rather than having a defined list of items.

"When I get stuff, what I get is randomly chosen," is pretty much Random Drop plus random stuff you get from other sources like quests and chests. But I'm not entirely sure those aren't included in Random Drop anyway.

The only thing I see as wrong is that Random Drop lists itself as a subtrope to Randomly Generated Loot. Which it isn't, since Random Drop includes drops from fixed lists, and that isn't covered by Randomly Generated Loot.

[up] - Yeah, we should turn Loot and Random Loot into proper pages, as they're currently redirects to RGL.

And also figure out what Plunder is, as that was Loot's previous redirect target.

Plunder would be better renamed to something like Spoils Of War and made non-video game mechanic specific, as in story based plundering after winning a battle.

And with the trope suggestion this one is entirely random loot, or in some cases random loot but off a specific loot table only usable by your class, but getting random loot then that loot will have entirely random stats too even if you get the same drop. [1]

@7: Yeah, Randomly Generated Loot is properly a subtrope of Random Drop, not the other way around. Fixed that part.

[up] - Wait... No... Randomly Generated Loot does not need to be dropped from enemies, while Random Drop does.

Randomly Generated Loot, in some forms, is super trope to Random Drop.

Also, found this TLP for "Randomized Properties of Videogame Item" from 6 years ago.

Commandeer it for this?

[up]Huh, that actually makes me think we've exposed a missing supertrope for randomized loot (of which "randomized loot that drops from monsters" and "procedurally generated loot" would be overlapping subtropes).
