"Outdated" dubs and translations that you enjoy

Mc Coy and Clinkenbeard were worlds apart for me. I like Clinkenbeard, too. She does a great Erza voice (a badass Action Girl from the anime Fairy Tail) and she should have just gone with that for Eighteen rather than making Eighteen sound so...plain.

There were plenty of good 90s dubs. They just weren't the norm. Standards were different back then, especially for anime shown on television.

I miss Stephanie Nadolny, too. It was cool how she got to play Goku and Gohan when they were kids.

I also remember how they tried to give certain characters accents, like James' snooty British accent. Funi also gave Vegeta an accent that's kind of... aristocratic, I guess? I don't have a word for it.

I agree but a lot of people are kinda snooty about old-school dubs.

What about Robotech? We kinda forgot about that.

The old Jojo OVA has some rather laughable voicework but Jotaro is pretty good(and sounds close to his current one) while D'arby and Dio are excellent. I still think that D'arby is the best one we've gotten yet, even better than any of the Japanese ones.

The bruce falconer music for DBZ > kai and original tracks IMO.

I never watched the original shin cutey honey but the dub I found pretty fun save for chokkei, who was terrible. Honey did a good job considering how cheesy her character actually is, but supposedly Go nagaki chose her himself.

Devilman OVA dub, but not because it's a good dub.

Yuyu Hakusho's dub is slightly fashioned now but man is it a blast.

I miss Norwegian Sven from Voltron.

It might not be in the spirit of this thread, but Ghost Stories and Duel Masters are two dubs that have to be mentioned.

Either despite or because it's weird direction, I enjoy the Revolutionary Girl Utena dub. I find that the high school play-tier acting only adds to the surreality.

Vampire Princess Miyu, especially the TV series. I think the dub isn't that bad. Miyu's voice gives her this mysterious quality that I like.

I've started watching the Miracle Girls anime. It's difficult after being used to the English names. Is that how Sailor Moon fans feel?

Having just recently watched the Shin Cutey Honey dub (first 4 eps) I can agree with most of the above sentiments about it.

It's so weird to hear a dub where they are willing to swear.

ghost stories existing, and the story behind its dub is great, watching ghost stories now can be a bit of a trial imo.

I loved the latam dub of first three seasons of Digimon, mostly due to them picking out the best parts of both the japanese original and the english dub, and it was passed without censorship, you got to love that.

Same with the German dub of season 1-3.

In Adventure they had a translated version of butterfly as the intro (and also all other songs) and mostly sticked to the Japanese script but had the characters use the same names as in the english dub but presented them as nicknames and occasionally had the characters be refereed by their full names.

Same with the latam dub, though they kept the original Brave Heart and other digievolution songs intact, they also used the english names but their parents called them by their original name at times. (I remember that Henry was called Jenrya by his parents in Tamers).

Also, one of the best aspects is that they had age-relevant voices for the characters: the kids sounded like kids and the digimon kept their childish voice only in their low leves, when they evolved, so did their voice.

I could also say the same thing for other anime like Card Captor Sakura (localized as Sakura Card Captor) and Inuyasha.

Ghost Stories isn't outdated. If anything, it's ahead of its time. Just a few years short of being the type of thing people would drool over about on Youtube.

If you want to split hairs, you could say some of its pop culture references are out dated.

Unintentional Period Pieces are commonplace in comedy.

Some Chinese CCTV shows (Three Treasures of Kanto, Legends of Monkey King, Small-Headed Child, Legends of Nezha, and Blue Mouse & Big-Faced Cat) and Mondo TV ones (Sandokan, Last of Mohicans and prints of Japanese anime) that aired on Greek local cartoon TV station Smile TV, back when it was famously called 0-6, were dubbed with awful accents that barely sounded like the regular Greek ones. Needless to say, they gained a cult following, and people would theorize that the actors were immigrants.

The station now airs more competent shows from DHX, Xilam and some European/Chinese ones. Some of the latter are dubbed in-house by amateur (and somewhat good at times) Greek actors... but they are not to be confused with the old (circa mid-2000s) atrocious aforementioned!!!

Very recently, I bought from a transaction site a Greek Nezha DVD, from those that 0-6 would formerly include on its now-defunct magazine. And to my surprise, there was a post-credits card, writing that the dub was done by Empire Video Production in Romania!!!!! That might explain the trope of mentioning the production number of an episode before the translated title, as it was also present in a Romanian SB of the first two seasons by Empire.

I genuinely dig the Digimon Adventure dub. Probably more a nostalgia thing than anything else, but thems the breaks.

The Fox Kids era Digimon dubs had some pretty funny dubisms. There are certainly things I don't miss about them (the score, some of the voicework, the added gags that don't land), but whenever I watch the subs, every other episode has at least one scene that makes me wish I could meld a dub line into the original script. Special shout-out goes to Impmon's "pineapple head" nickname for Guilmon, and the way Beelzemon's voice actor coldly uses the nickname while preparing to shoot him point-blank.

Also, while the 4 Kids dub of One Piece was unbelievably bad, changing Sanji's cigarette to a lollipop is by far my favorite dub edit of all time.

I actually wouldnt mind the lolipop at all if 4kids kept their promise to do right by One Piece and keep the feel and character of the series intact otherwise.
