Dragons

These large reptilian giants rise from the sea, with wings large enough to cause tornadoes, swords for knives, and nearly impervious scales. It's often believed that the world was full of continents and not scattered islands, but that was before the dragons attacked. Others say that the dragons generated so much heat that it caused the caps to melt and global warming to accelerate, turning the world into the tropical apocalypse it is today. And others will adamantly tell you that the Dragons came to be because of our own sins and is the planet's way of eradicating all sentient life. But whatever you believe, logic, science, religion, or insanity, the fact is that nobody likes dragons and they don't like us.

In days of old, Dragons were battled with large ships, manned with 100s upon 1000s of men and women who were glad to give up their lives to fight these beast. But as it stands, the strategy of confronting Dragons with ships is almost certain death. Dragons can lay waste to ships and have the ultimate advantage of being able to maneuver with unrivaled agility. But then a pair of brothers had an idea that, for the time, was like the ravings of madmen.

Take the fight to the sky.

And thus, we've entered the Aero-Era. It's been 100 years since those brothers have created the world's first flying machine, or the "Aeroplane", which revolutionized the art of fighting dragons. But I'm sure you already know all this. And if not, you're welcome for the history lesson.

Why would you know this? Well, because you're Contract Fighters. You belong to nobody-at least, as of yet-and you work purely for money. Whether you have a crew or fly solo, you've all been contracted this day to fight off what is called a 'Dragon Storm'. Dragons are coming. A school of them, and you need to protect the island-and kill as many as you can so you can get paid. Will this just be another job for you?

Or is this the start of something bigger?

—-

Alright, y'all! Welcome to Aeronaut: Dragon Slayer! This is the reiteration of the original Aeronaut RP, with brand new plot and a GM who, this time, has a more stable internet connection.

This RP is heavily based off of Crimson Skies but with an alternate, Oceanpunk setting. Some time ago, long ago-like, longer than most of your characters can likely remember, the world was flooded and the continents were broken up into island-nations. They're all apart of the United Nation of Islanders(UNI) and you all are Contract Fighters-mercenaries who are paid to fight Dragons. This RP will have elements of exploration, quest-taking, finding and befriending-or making enemies of-NP Cs, and clashing or joining forces with the UNI Military Force. But for now, you're just a hired gun trying to get a sweet paycheck.

Schizo Tech is going on in full effect here. Your personal aircraft can range from real planes to fictional ones. You can use laser-mounted weapons, but they're going to all be experimental pieces of technology. So clunky, prone to malfunction, and expensive. You can give yourself Robot Henchmen or be a robot yourself. You can just walk around packing heat or use less conventional tools and gadgets.

You are all starting off on Apple Island: a New York analog, consisting of the main 'Big Apple' and the smaller 'Little Red', 'Little Green', and 'Little Yellow' surrounding islands that seem to rotate around the island like some odd sun. It's the island that never sleeps and is often told to be the birth of modern aircraft technology. Your characters can be from here or from some other island of your own creation. I'd just like you to know, however, that no islands will be accepted without following the theme of naming them after some kind of fruit, vegetable, or nut.

Sign Up Sheet

  • Name:

  • Age:

  • Race: (Are you Human? Some Anthropomorphic Animal? Robot? Cyborg? Android? There's very few wrong answers, but if you DO put something down I don't approve of I'll be sure to let you know. I'll just tell you right now: no Demons, Angels, or Gods. Be free to ask what you can or can't do.)

  • Appearance:

  • Personality: (Be as descriptive or as vague as need be.)

  • Equipment: (Items, swords, medicines)

  • Skills: (Anything outside of flying)

  • Background: (Just like the previous RP, I'm gonna allow some worldbuilding here. You can be from any sort of island you can think of. Whether it resembles a country like Ireland or Egypt or is well known for it's Mining Colonies or Military Strength. Maybe you hail from some giant ship that sails the waters endlessly like a moving island. Go nuts.)

  • Aircraft: (You do not need to be too technical with your descriptions. The type of plane it is and it's weapons are enough if you're going for a real plane. Any sort of souped up engines or special pieces of tech should also be listed if it's gonna have any impact on your craft.)

  • Crewmates: (For any of you who need more than one person to man your craft. Be as detailed or as simple as need be. You can collaborate with other players if you wanna share an aircraft.)

Previously created characters from the original and/or from the Re Launch should still be applicable here, but please remember the name-theme for islands. I didn't enforce it last time, but I plan on doing it now.

If there's any questions, something I left out, or really just comments to be made, then speak 'em!

Still interested, will probably sign up with a different character than the ReLaunch, though. Have ideas.

Also is a zeppelin of some variety an acceptable aircraft?

Name: Riley Birsan

Age: 27

Race: Half-human, half-Cat Girl.

Appearance: 5'6'', lean, not particularly muscled, short black hair, light brown fur, long fingernails, relatively short tail (not prehensile), wears flexible grey clothes

Personality: Sly; hesitant to trust; fast-talking; curious; has her snarky moments; soft spot for her mother, who is now retired, lives in Red Apple, and unaware of her daughter's whereabouts or profession

Equipment: (she travels light)

  • Apple necklace- memento of her mom. She wears this on a leather band around her neck.
  • Thieves' Tools- lockpick, bearing balls, the works.
  • Rapier- Her weapon of choice.
  • Performer's outfit- when she needs a disguise, she usually goes with a travelling acrobat.

Skills:

  • Mechanic skills- maintaining her plane on her own, she picked up what's necessary.
  • Le Parkour: In the crowded neighbourhoods of Little Red, Roof Hopping is the quickest way to get form Point A to Point B.
  • Sneaking: nothing exceptional, but she's pretty good at avoiding detection and making a quick getaway form an ordinary person. Related to that is the next one...
  • Er... let's just say she's not above using the Five-Finger Discount when she needs a part for the Camel... or a meal... or that pretty-looking trinket.
Background: Little Red is the most industrial and crime-ridden of the three rotating islands. Riley grew up here. Her father, the cat-person, was never in her life. Her mother refused to talk about him. Her mother ran a fruit stall; unfortunately, there were a lot of kids applying the Five-Finger Discount for a quick snack. Riley rationalized that stealing the fruit back, or maybe something else of theirs, was OK... which led to her taking little things for her mom... which led to her taking up parkour in order to make better getaways... which led to an interest in airplanes... which led to her taking a biplane and flying away with it. (If the GM has plans for Little Red, I can change her home to some other crime-ridden island.)

Aircraft: A Sopwith Camel, except with, y'know, a few upgrades in order to not be pathetically weak by Aero-Era standards. It is rather weak and light, but it can move very quickly and turns on a dime. It fires ordinary, reliable bullets, no experimental lasers here.

Crewmates: None. She's her own mechanic and a Camel has a crew of one.

So... anything I missed?

Flying Viking Jesse is back to crack some skulls.

  • Name: Captain Jesse Emmerich
  • Age: 28
  • Race: Human
  • Appearance: 5'7, with short blonde hair. Average, slightly muscular build. Wears a heavy coat over a shirt of mail, and under that a cloth shirt. He also wears some regular pants and some some simple shoes.
  • Personality: Impulsive, yet calm. While not in a battle, he likes to be humorous and tease people if he trusts them. Otherwise, he's fairly friendly. While in a battle, he is very aggressive and reckless. Likes to drink.
  • Equipment: On his person, he always has a 3ft long Viking style sword in a scabbard, and a dirk hidden in a sleeve in his coat. He has three items while piloting his airship.
    • Kerosene: Provides a boost in speed to engines, at the cost of engine damage while in use.
    • Lucky Phoenix Claw: A lucky talisman that when waved, gives Captains the confidence to do risky high speed turns, at the cost of the engines. (improves turning speed.)
    • Hydrogen Canister: Improves ability to ascend through the air, but damages the balloon.
    • The ship also has a few extra shields and one handed axes, along with extra wood and patching for the balloon.
  • Skills: Really good at fighting hand-to-hand, and is a skilled captain and navigator. Can preform minor repairs, but he usually has his crew focus on repairs.
  • Background: Comes from a infamous large island in the far north, named Epli. It bears resemblance to Viking age Norse and Germanic lands, and its inhabitants frequently raid other nations. Epli has Schizo Tech in full force, with people carrying axes, swords and shields on flying ships with gatling guns and rocket launchers. The government is formed by a bunch of clans that elect a leader, named the Adalgothi, to rule the island in a way to benefit the clans. Jesse was born to a smith, and spent his early life helping around the forge. This helped him get stronger, and when he turned 18, he enlisted into a raiding group. After around 8 years raiding and plundering, he bought his own ship and three crew members. He raided for a year and a half, but found out that he could make better money being a mercenary, so he traveled to Apple Island and started looking for a job.
  • Aircraft: The Lilias, a Pyramidion. Picture of where the weapons are. Jesse's is built for closing in fast and dealing damage up close. He has put a steel ramming piece on the front of his ship(not pictured), for extra damage when ramming. Two weapons are mounted on a catwalk on the front of the ship, a Whirlwind Light Gatling Gun on the right side, and a Barking Dog Light Carronade(shoots 16 projectiles, basically a big shotgun) on the left. Near the back, on the port side, there are two more weapons. On the lower point, there is a Mercury Field Gun(it's like a cannon and a sniper rifle had a baby), and on the higher point, there is a Javelin Light Harpoon Gun(fires a harpoon at a enemy dragon/whatever, and pulls it towards The Lilias).
  • Crewmates: 3 other crew members. All of them are pretty good at hand-to-hand combat and have personal weapons.
    • A gunner named Byron Stígandr, that carries Grease Rounds(much higher fire rate at lower range), Incendiary Rounds, and Burst Rounds(lower direct damage, but gives the bullet an explosive charge), all of these he can load into any weapon. He typically stays on the upper gun platform and switches between those two guns. Has a single bladed axe and a shield.
    • An engineer named Branden Ludovic, that carries a Spanner(repairs small amounts quickly), a Fire Extinguisher, and a DynaBuff Kit(provides small bonuses to stuff, like making the weapons do more damage or the engines faster). Backup engineer, mostly improves stuff and mans the lower two guns. Has a nordic-style long sword.
    • Lastly, another engineer named Vera Hildr, that carries a Rubber Mallet(repairs large amounts slowly), a Pipe Wrench(repairs medium amounts at a medium rate), and a Spyglass. Designated engineer, repairs everything. Also spots out ships with her spyglass. Has two handed double bladed axe.
I changed the island's name to Epli, which is Old Norse for apple. Should I change anything else?

@Blacksocks: Everything checks out. I didn't have any plans for Little Red in the near future, so I'm okay with having it be this highly industrial, crime-ridden island. Riley is accepted.

@Skiller 2: The only thing needing to be fixed is that last sentence in his bio. Remember, in this go-round,you're not hunting pirates-I mean, you might, but it's mostly dragons. And there's no High Aces, you're just contract fighters on a job. Of course, if you wanna start your own High Aces in-universe and say your crewmates are part of it, then by all means, go ahead. As is, Jesse is accepted.

Bomber

  • Name: Minerva Featherstone
  • Age: 25
  • Race: Fox
  • Appearance: "You asked for a bomber? Do allow me to help you with that request"
  • Personality: Cool and sometimes seen as aloof Minerva actually has a kind and caring heart.
  • Background: Born into a high standing family in Esterfront (Located on Squash Island) Minerva soon discovered that the high society life was not to her liking really. She secretly started to train to become a pilot when she was 13 (one of her buttlers being her mentor of sorts). When she became of age the first hing she did was leaving her family - and most of her money - behind (she did take enough with her to buy the two airplanes though). One of her former butlers also decided to come with her.
  • Aircraft:
    • The Do-217 a long range bomber, able to deliver up to 4 metric tons of bombs over a target. It carries 6 machine guns of varying calibers for self defense purposes, but this particular plane specially modified so that it can carry a smaller interceptor with it into the combat area at the cost of two internal hardpoints.

Escort

  • Name: Aydan Sterling
  • Age: 21
  • Race: Human
  • Appearance: "You called me? Is something the matter?"
  • Personality: While inexperienced as a fighter he's exiteable and cares for his plane and comrades.
  • Background: Aydan was born into a middle class family in Esterfront... while he had not much he at least could get by without too much troubles. With him mostly working as a butler for one of the upper class families there. It was a good paying job and the family he was working for was nice... though what his life did solely lack was adventure... as he heard that his Mistress wanted to become a bounty hunter and searched for a crew he was quick to come with her, happy to be treated as equal to her.
  • Aircraft:
    • The XP-31 a short range interceptor, this one was made specifically so it could be carried by the Do-217 to defend it from enemies.

2 Questions:

  • 1. Is it permissable to play a cyborg/robot inspired by Machinehead? In other words, somebody who is completely out in the open and interfaces directly with their machine in flight?

  • 2. What exactly is the name theme for Islands?

BlackSocks Since: Oct, 2016

IIRC the theme for making islands is naming them after some sort of fruit/vegetable/nut.

1. I think that's fine. I've got nothing wrong with you doing that.

2. The Island naming theme is that they're all named after Fruits, Vegetables, Nuts, Types of Trees(decided to add this in), or something related to the four up there.

Jaros looks for jobs.

  • Name:Jaros
  • Age: 37
  • Race: Human Android
  • Appearance: "For my vengeance, my body is a sacrifice I gladly give.", about 2.5 meters tall.
  • Personality: Jaros is sarcastic during calm times and a foulmouthed, nononsense type during battle or planning. He relishes fights with dragons, whether it being hurt by them or hurting them. Really fucking hates dragons.
  • Equipment:
    • Diagnostics Laptop: A standard firmware laptop of Wallnu-Isle now simply Wallnu, it allows an interfacer with the appropriate ship and body to create a link between them and their machine, diagnose problems in machine and user and adjust battle parameters on the fly.
    • 2 White cloaks with his bodies model number (see picture) on the shoulder; used both for formal as well as casual occasions.
    • 1 Black hooded cloak, no number on it; used during mournings for the fallen.
  • Skills:
    • Programmer: No suprise there, Jaros was forced to be able to program and adjust his ships parameters on the fly.
    • Interfacer: Allows one to move their ship as if it was part of ones own body as wella s call ones ship in emergencies.
    • Martial Arts: On the ground, Jaros relies on his own body to subdue those that oppose him.
  • Background: Jaros comes from the mothership Wallnu, a ship build by the former residents of Wallnu-Isle, a former technological stronghold, after their homeland was destroyed by dragons. These people function as simle mercenaries now, though they mainly take jobs related to dragons. Since they are small in numbers and their rite of manhood involves slaying dragons (preferably by themselves), they have developed technology revolving around small one man ships, which allow the user to experience battle and slaying as if they would do it with heir bare hands. The mothership has visited Apple Island a month ago. W Here exactly they are now is anybodies guess. Probably a few islands further or just visiting the neighbors.

    • Jaros is a young, but exceptional member of the Wallnu Knights. He has trained himself for the past 30 years, designing and improving his T300-machine for the past 10 after he earned the right to own one. Now he has to prove that his machine is up for the task... or die trying.
  • Aircraft: T300A-"HellWing"
    • The T300-Series is the goto series for any pilot of Wallnu who want to deal in serious firepower. Its propulsion system is reliant on a mixture of normal gasoline and a dragons fiery secretions.
    • Equipment:
      • 2 M1919 Browning Machine Guns, mounted on top of the wings
      • 2 small rocket launcher, which can be adjusted to fire up to triple their normal payload diagonally downwards. A total of 24 Rockets can be loaded, normal payload is 2 rockets per salvo.
  • Crewmates: technically 1 as his ship has an AI to assist in combat and find it s way to its owner.

  • Name: Captain Lyleth Shal’Iryn
  • Age: 70
  • Race: Shyreni Elf (a.k.a. “we’re-not-Drow-we-swear”)
  • Appearance: 6’2 in height. For appearance, for outfit.
  • Personality: Snark. Snark. Snark. Aside from that, she’s pretty introverted, and tends to like books more than people.
  • Equipment (Along with various and sundry personal items):
    • Shaera .308 Sunari (.308 caliber lever-action clip-loading rifle)
    • First-aid kit.
    • Various maps of the surface
    • An exquisitely-crafted rapier, obviously both a weapon and sign of wealth.
    • Medium armor. Mostly for protection against, say, swords and boarders, though it's... somewhat effective against bullets.
  • Skills:
    • Competent shot with her rifle.
    • Basic first-aid.
    • Decent at fixing things.
    • She’s also a rather good duelist. Comes with being aristocracy.
    • Additionally, she’s a pretty good leader and manager, coming from a family which believes that the aristocracy should actually do something.
  • Background: Lyleth was born to an aristocratic family of Shyren relatively recently, a few years after their transition to a federal republic.(The circle on her gun(see picture above) is the house’s crest.) She was well-educated, and taught a wide variety of subjects, from dueling to science to literature. We’ll get back to her in a bit.
Around the same time as the Dragons were rising, the underground Drow empire was fracturing. Shalune, one of the larger cities, and the provincial capital of Shyren, and the only province that actually extended to the surface, and one of a handful which even had access to the surface, had declared independence. They also declared spider-worship banned. The entire sociopolitical system was upended. After a number of years of unrest, the province settled down to a constitutional monarchy, a la late-19th century Prussia. The new Empress held power, advised by a democratically-elected government, and the aristocracy elected the next Empress upon her death or a term of 75 years. Of course, the rest of the Drow didn’t like Shyren after this. Many of Shyren’s nobles had quite liked their position, and the ones who had argued against had been removed. Forcefully. So, a number of the other provinces formed an alliance, and moved to kick Shyren’s arse. That… didn’t go so well for them. You see, Shyren had an advantage: Due to exposure to the ideas of the surface, it had the best and the brightest technologists, scientists, and engineers in the empire. They had a natural advantage, too: The cave system that was most of the province had exactly one entrance to the rest of the Empire.
While the Empire had a rather powerful military, it was using outdated equipment, outdated tactics. The Shyreni military had cutting-edge modern weapons, the latest in tactics from the surface, and, well, yeah. Needless to say, that did not end well.
About a century and a half ago, the government was restructured. No longer a constitutional monarchy, instead a truly democratic state. Well, mostly, the old aristocracy still held quite a lot of power.
What remains and constitutes FRS territory is a… fairly large cluster of islands, collectively referred to as Niriel, which translates to ‘cherry blossom [tree],’ and numerous tunnels which criss-cross the area under the ocean floor. Most of them are dammed up, and very few people live in them anymore for fear of flooding. Most of the old Empire, likewise, was destroyed by their tunnels flooding. Ha.
Random information on the FRS: The Shyreni aristocracy hasn’t seen to move beyond their lovely tradition of surprisingly-unlethal court intrigue, and they remain a powerful force in politics..
Parliament is a tricameral system, one chamber of which consists of popularly-elected delegates based on voting districts, one chamber of which is drawn from the a) aristocracy, and b) leaders in various fields, whether it be art, science, philosophy, etc., and one chamber drawn from the various semi-autonomous provincial governments (It is a federal republic, after all). The Chancellor is decided by a popular vote, and is the de facto head of government, and has a council of advisors (title varies, generally Minister of (x), chaired by the Council President, or the Prime Minister, who is appointed by the Chancellor and confirmed by Parliament..
The current Chancellor is Nassande Sharose, a rather popular woman with expansionistic and militaristic tendencies.
Anyhow, enough with the worldbuilding, and back to Lyleth. Lyleth was raised in wealth, and her family owned a zeppelin, which functioned as a yacht, essentially, which Lyleth spent an inordinate amount of time riding growing up. She’s always liked flying, and her goal in life was to become a pilot.
Anyhow, Lyleth joined the military, and went on to become the captain of one of these vessels. That is, until for political reasons she got honorably discharged and esseeeentially exiled from Niriel. Her family managed to get a military-grade airship, albeit a small frigate to her (she didn’t bother to ask how), along with some of her friends as crew. After spending a few years just participating in the high society of Apple Island, she decided to actually go do something productive. In her case, well, killing dragons.
  • Aircraft: The Shyreni military does not particularly like fixed-wing aircraft. They see their uses, but try to avoid them whenever possible. This is a long-standing tradition, probably stemming from their roots as the Shyreni navy. Probably. Really, though? Who knows. They’re just weird that way. Elves, yo. Anyhow, onto the airship in question: The Lucent Glaive
    • Armor: Some. Not going to hole it with a pistol or a small-caliber rifle, but anything larger than that will.
    • Engines: Zhasani Industries engines. Medium speed, kinda slow to turn, though.
    • Weapons:
      • 2 Twin-linked Shaera .50 ZNS (HMG), turreted.
      • 4 broadside-mounted Nasura .90 autocannons. 60° swivel arcs each.
      • Spinal-mounted experimental railgun. Takes a long time to charge, is a pain to reload, and slows the ship down by a fair amount. But dear god is the punch worth it.
  • Crewmates:
    • Anashide Shal’Iryn, gunner (Lyleth’s cousin, for the record)
      • Race: Shyreni Elf
      • Personality: Unlike her cousin, Anashide is very outgoing, though she’s kind of a pretentious asshole.
      • Appearance: Very much like Lyleth, in fact the two are often mistaken for sisters, though Anashide has her hair dyed a deep turquoise, and is of slightly lighter skin, and she’s slightly shorter.
      • Equipment:
        • Shaera 722 Service Pistol. Essentially a Colt M1911.
        • Niriel Sky Corps' Officer's saber.
        • Medium armor.
    • Shynri Shal’Shenora, gunner.
      • Race: Shyreni Elf
      • Personality: Shynri is generally energetic, and has Blood Knight tendencies. She’s really excited to have the opportunity to fight dragons, instead of boring things, like pirates.
      • Appearance: Shynri is tall. 6’8 tall (Shyreni, on average, are ~5’10). She has extremely long hair dyed a deep crimson, though usually wears it in a ponytail to keep it out of machinery.
      • Equipment:
        • Shaera 890 Shasyrel ("Lawbringer") pistol. Basically a .44 magnum revolver.
        • Glaive (The polearm, not the throwing disc)
        • Medium armor
    • Doctor Shylaste Shal’Astrani, engineer/medic.
      • Race: Shyreni Elf
      • Personality: Shy, introverted, and bookish. Very much a nerd, as one would expect of someone who can both fix an airship and a person.
      • Appearance: Of slightly below-average height, she has very short hair, a blueish-grey color, and wears glasses.
      • Equipment:
        • Shaera 772SP
        • Mechanic's tools
        • Light armor
        • First-aid kid, as well as a full doctor's bag

Guys I'm new I have no idea on how to bold, or use lists, or link )

Name:syn

Age:18

Race: Merfolk

Appearance: A blue haired cool guy. About 160cm, dark.

Personality: his attitude can be summed up as 'I am a racist guy who hates the land dwellers and yet I have to smile '

Equipment: a pair of pistols Does a dresser count as an equipment?

Skills: I've added levels to show proficiency Aquamancy[level 5] : a basic skill for all merfolk, his aquamancy is limited to using water to attack, to be fair it's more like water bending. But he can't make water from nothing.

Transformation[level 1] : the ability to transform from a two legged human to a merfolk.

Background: the merfolk have always been a rather queen race. Ever since the flood they knew that there are more possibilities than before, they can explore more do more, act more. So it's natural that the. Small race divided into many tribes. But syn was a loner. It all started when he found an egg. He was immediately banished for finding the egg, as it belonged to a dragon . A beast the merfolk feared forever. But syn decided to raise it. And thus he joined the mercenaries, because that's where he was truly accepted. But the dragon who he named tye was kept a secret

Aircraft: A wonderful disguised dragon. Anyone looking at it would say it's a dragon mecha. And well it wasn't. That being said. He never allowed visitors on it. Else it will be exposed

Crewmates: Tye the dragon, about the size of a horse because it was young. It wears a mechsuit to hide its identity.

I guess this is kind of my fault for not being more descriptive of my setting and intentions in the opening post. ><

I'm not really accepting characters that do some form of magic(especially Aquamancy). Your Merman being able to turn his tail into legs, that's fine since it could be a racial ability of some kind. Magic just doesn't really fit here.

Also, not accepting pet Dragons. Dragons in this setting are suppose to be Always Chaotic Evil, think less like wild animals and more like the Titans from Attack on Titan. No Dragon Riding here, if you saw a dragon egg, it'd be big and you'd wanna destroy that before it hatched.

Sorry, but Syn isn't accepted.

((Also, sorry that I didn't start up the RP yet. >< I'm about to get on it.))
