Billboard has been around since 2011, but the page is completely bare bones.

It's not a trope in and of itself. Just seeing a billboard in fiction is People Sit On Chairs. There are only two examples of their use in media, and I doubt even those are terribly valid. A billboard by itself is not memetic like Burma-Shave or See Rock City or Wall Drug.

There's nothing here at all that constitutes a trope, and a cut has already been declined. Perhaps it could be reworked into a Useful Notes on their history in advertising?

Opening.

I could get behind making a Useful Note.

Main/Billboard found in: 13 articles, excluding discussions.

Since January 1, 2012 this article has brought 53 people to the wiki from non-search engine links.

Not really a lot worth saving. If there were more examples, I might suggest looking for patterns, which could be sent to TLP, but as it is, I think cut and/or move to useful notes are the only sensible actions.

I don't oppose making it a useful note, but I do question just how useful it would really be. :)

(The cutmasters are much more likely to go along with a cut request if TRS has decided it's appropriate.)

Billboards figure in a lot of tropes but there isn't a lot that's tropeable about them as themselves. For that reason, I don't want to see it cut.

There might be some tropes around billboards, but just "Billboard" is PSOC. Something like Billboard Electrocution could be a trope (I wonder how many bad guys end up getting killed off like that, in particular considering how many films end with a Rooftop Confrontation), but that's doing something specific with the chair.

There's only one other trope wicked to Billboard and that's Billboard Epic. I'm not familiar with Advertising Tropes, so I can only go by the wicks. How many tropes actually figure in billboards?

That said, this could probably be turned into an index of such tropes if there are a bunch. Considering how few wicks and inbounds this page has, we could probably rename it to something that sounds like an index if we do that.

That that said, I don't see the useful-ness of making this a Useful Note if there are's only Billboard Epic and two media examples.

I can think of tropes that involve Billboards, like when people climb up them to deface them, but the phenomena itself is a useful note at best.

My Face On A Billboard seems dangerously close to violating No New Stock Phrases IMO. Pretty sure any trope name that includes first person language like that isn't a good idea, right?

There's also using a billboard as concealment, (usually by traffic cops, but occasionally by someone who trying to shake a tail.)

Do we have basic pages for other media types that don't contain "examples" themselves? We have "Magazine", I know.

Oh, look! We have an entire list of similar pages: Media. Although on that list, I think "Billboards" should be under "Advertising" not "Print Media"

Oh, I misunderstood. I thought you meant blue-linked, already troped tropes.

Do y'all think this should be made into a catch-all for the not-yet-troped billboard-related tropes?

In order to avoid more TRS boondoggles, I recommend that any tropes be created in TLP outside of this effort.

Hmm... this could work as a Useful Note, but I'm also fine with cutting it. It's really not useful unless there are more billboard related tropes like mentioned earlier (aside from Billboard Epic). But since those tropes don't exist yet, this is marginally useful as a Useful Note.

With the current wicks and inbounds, I say cut it.

Either way, I make a motion to get a page action crowner up:

  • Make into a Useful Notes
  • Cut page
  • Leave as is

Looks like we have a clear winner, so calling in favor of making the page a Useful Note.

Move made to UsefulNotes.Billboard. Not much wicks to sort through, so I can do it myself.

We'll need to expand on the page, though, to make it a proper useful note.

UPDATE: Wicks done, now we need to polish the page. I may do a but of it when I can.
