Status: Game Over!

___________________________________________________

For over a century, Imperial Vissan, the mightiest nation on the continent of Tropera, has been waging a war of expansion. The Empire's armies have swallowed one kingdom after another, and their sights now lie on the peaceful kingdom of Calderia as the world watches. To the west, King Dolfen of Frael has moved his loyal knights to reinforce the Vissan border, leaving many of the mountain villages vulnerable to bandit attacks. Disgusted with the King's apparent apathy for the common people, Sir Tigra has resigned her knightly commission in order to build a mercenary company to defend the villages from the bandit menace herself.

___________________________________________________

Fire Emblem Tropera is a tactical FRPG based on the Fire Emblem tactical RPG franchise, in particular the GBA entries, Rekka No Ken and Sacred Stones, with most of the game's mechanics borrowed directly from these games. Players will begin as members of a newly-formed mercenary company in the Kingdom of Frael in order to battle local bandit groups, with the story expanding as their notoriety grows. As this is my first attempt at G Ming a campaign, the story is going to be fairly railroaded, though I am planning allowances for the party to make decisions that will affect the direction of the game. For the same reason, I'll be limiting the party size to 8 players, at least to start with.

In order to ensure that the game keeps moving, there will be a 48 hour time limit on posting player moves and commands during battles. After the 48 hour limit, I will move any absentee characters myself in order to progress the game. Any character whose player is absent for 3 rounds in a row will be removed from the game, and sign ups reopened for a replacement. Players who know they are going to be absent in advance may arrange for their character to be played by me or another player during their absence without incurring this penalty, as long as they return within a reasonable time frame.

To fill out your character's statistics, start with 10 Hit Points and 5 Movement. From there, you have 35 points you may assign to Hit Points, Strength, Magic, Skill, Speed, Luck, Defense, and Resistance as you like (see the Rules Thread for explanations of each stat), but not exceeding 10 points per stat (20 for HP).

Once your points are assigned, choose your stat growth rates by assigning a value between 0-3 (1-4 for HP) to each stat. Whenever your character levels up, I will roll a d20 for each stat, and add your growth rates to the results. Of the 5 highest results, you will choose 4 to increase by 1 point.

To finish character creation, choose a feat from the list in either the Player's Ebook or the Rules Thread, and a weapon or magic proficiency.

    Sample Character
  • Name: Malia
  • Age: 19
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance: Slender and boyish, with short red hair and bright blue eyes. Prefers to wear skirts and sashes that show off her legs.
  • Personality: Malia is an optimist at heart, though experience has taught her to caution her instincts. She enjoys helping others and seeing them smile.
  • Background: Malia grew up in a mountain village in Frael where she never quite fit in. She took to the road at a young age, at different times working for traveling merchants, performers, and whatever other odd jobs she came across. After meeting Sir Tigra when the knight came to the defense of a caravan Malia was traveling with, the knight took Malia on as her page. Now that Sir Tigra has struck out to form her own mercenary company, Malia has taken on the task of acting as her staff officer and quartermaster.

  • Skill: 1
  • Speed: 10
  • Luck: 10
  • Defense: 2
  • Resistance: 6
  • Movement: 5
  • Feat: Supply
  • Proficiency: Perform D

Note that Malia is the party's staff officer and quartermaster, and generally will not be participating in battles. Anyone considering a performer character themself should not be dissuaded by her presence.

Yo Wryte, it's your cousin Nman, let's go bowling I don't know shit about Fire Emblem but I love sprites and fantasy stuff, is that okay or should I just mosey on out?

Am interested in this, though I haven't figured out what sort of character I'll try to build. Might see what other people try to build so I can fill out a suitable niche.

@nman: Get your butt in here! Gameplay-wise it'll be pretty similar to War of the Magical Girls, just with stats instead of super powers (and less fancy maps, because I don't know how Parable made his :P). Story-wise, we'll be exploring a medieval fantasy world instead of a magical modern one, with a focus on the political intrigue behind a continent-spanning war that you'll (hopefully) be bringing to and end.

Quick question. If say, I want to make a mounted character, what sorts of mounts would we be able to choose from, flavor-wise? Also, even though this probably wouldn't take effect until later in the rp, are the "Mounted" feat and the "Flying Mount" feats mutually exclusive to each other, cause it would kinda make sense if they were.

Also, does each magic type (anima, light, dark) have its own proficiency ranking, or is magic just one category?

Mounted and Flying Mount are mutually exclusive. If you take one at a later level, it would replace the previous feat. Flavor-wise, pegasi and wyverns are the standard flying mounts, and horses the standard ground mount, but I'm open to alternatives.

Anima, Dark, and Light magic are each their own proficiencies.

Rules thread and ebook are now updated to clarify this.

Oh my. Are you planning on using Roll20 or some other actual map/grid system for this? I love the GBA FE games, but if you're going to track stats and movement to that level of accuracy, I can't see this working without a formalized map...

Also, I see we're not working with a formal class system?

Yes, we will be playing on a map during battles.

With the huge array of classes and promotions in FE, I decided it would be simpler for the purposes of this RP to let players build their own class by choosing their own stat growth and skills, and use a feat system to substitute for the special abilities of some classes. For example, instead of needing separate classes for sword knight, lance knight, axe knight, etc, the player can just choose the Mounted feat and their weapon of choice.

You may have also noticed that I've chosen to cut the counterattacking mechanic from this game, because I feel it's too high a risk factor in this context. In the video game, for example, a unit who drops to low health due to a counterattack can be healed before the end of the turn by a friendly healer unit, because that feedback is instant. In this game, healers won't know who's been hurt by counterattacks until the team's turn is over and I've rolled all the results of the round, which then leaves the countered character vulnerable to being eliminated during the enemy's turn before anyone can do anything about it.

Mechanically, the lack of counterattacks means the alpha strike matters a lot more. It also eliminates the whole "can't post unit with too powerful a weapon up front—enemies will conga-line into them, inflict damage, and die" situation, which is good.

All right. Color me officially interested. I'm thinking of making a light horseman or some description—"nothing too hot or too heavy", as the old border reivers' boast had it...

I'd probably like to make a healer dude but I'm trying to figure out this system. So I would choose staff proficiency, and then just use that D rank staff to heal people? Single-target or anyone in range? And from the way it's worded I assume I have no way to attack? But is there a chance to 'miss' a heal, which requires dumping points into Skill? Would speed let you heal multiple times per turn? If I chose the Proficient feat, what would be the C rank staff. If you also chose one of the magics with the Proficient feat, could you also attack with fire in addition to being a healer, or can you only equip one weapon?

Yes, you would take the staff proficiency to heal, and if you took a bonus proficiency as your feat you could either increase the staff proficiency to C (not recommended, as you probably won't be seeing any C rank staves until after you've earned another proficiency rank anyway), or start another weapon or magic proficiency at D.

Staves are single-target unless otherwise noted, but are not weapons; you would be unable to attack unless you used the proficiency feat to pick up a weapon or magic. Characters can carry up to 5 items at a time, so carrying a staff does not preclude carrying a weapon.

Heals do not miss, so skill is irrelevant to it, but there are some status-inflicting staves at higher levels that require hit rolls. Heals don't benefit from speed for multiple uses per round.

Oh damn. I hope that won't eat up too much of your time, because that sounds pretty amazing.

So for my first choice of character, a light horse reiver, I'm looking for a specific geographic background similar to the old English-Scottish border. That is, rough wooded hills and broken land, day-to-day rule by familial clans instead of formal government, and—optionally—government(s) occasionally using the area to recruit against each other, occasionally cracking down when crime is too out of hand, otherwise not bothering.

Bandit country, basically—think The Steel Bonnets.

That sounds like Frael, but there may be other borderlands that fit.

Also, what are some of the other historic kingdoms/states that might have existed in the recent past, besides the ones mentioned in the discussion page? The lore kinda mentions Vissan subjugating several kingdoms and stuff over the last in-game century, and it might be useful to know what places these might be, along with where their original territories might have been.

Also, it might be useful to have a map of the in-game world, just so we can better visualize where these places are. I'm probably going to be making a Light-based thief-mage, but I'm not sure where Kambacha might be in relationship to everything else (I think it's on the southern half of Tropera), though if any of the historic/now non-existent kingdoms/locales interest me, I might use one of them.

@Sabres: The sprites don't take up too much time. They're mostly just matters of palette swapping and minor modifications. I did almost all the sprites for the War of the Magical Girls RP Nman and I played together in a few years back, and those were way trickier than these will be, having to convert FE sprites to cover magical girls with such nonsense as biplane wings and carrier cannons.

For the background you're thinking about, you're probably looking at the Cairn Mountains, which surround Frael and border Vissan's southern edge. There are likely quite a few scattered villages and mountain people living up there beyond the rule of the greater nations, occasionally coming into conflict with them as bandits and raiders encroach on civilized land. I could easily see a particular area with heavy bandit activity that Vissan likes to use as a first assignment for fresh military units to tackle.

Another option could be Reginbor, where clan rule is still dominant, with the high king or queen only called upon for settling intertribal disputes or leading the united clans against outside enemies, although it's more of a Norse vibe than Scot.

@Cathari: I honestly haven't put too much material into the conquered territories of modern Vissan. I'll do some thinking on that tonight and get back to you. As for Kambacha, it's fairly isolated from the northern half of the continent, being separated by a narrow sea and the Cairn Mountians all the way to Murgavio, which sits in a bottleneck between the north and south. Anyone from Kambacha who has found themself in the north probably traveled there via Murgavio.

I have a map drawn up, but it's analogue, so I would need to either scan it or redraw it digitally, which I only hesitate to do because my laptop doesn't seem to be capable of processing my tablet's pen pressure sensitivity. I'll work something out; I definitely want to have the map available to you guys.

[edit] Oh god, the compatibility between my tablet and laptop is even worse than I realized, or else my Sai settings are screwed up beyond belief, but here is our map. I'll see if I can't do a better quality one further down the road.

Alright, as promised, expansion on the conquered territory of Vissan. In order of conquest:

  • Old Vissan: Before the war began, Vissan was one of seven relatively small kingdoms that divvied the lowlands of northern Tropera. Vissan lay in the center north, giving them control of the great northern lake and the river to the sea, which in turn gave them control over the flow of trade through the northern lowlands, and even into the highlands of Reginbor to the northwest and Calderia to the east. The military knowledge and magical secrets they acquired from these trade partners were the key to their success in the early days of the war, before they had acquired enough territory and power to crush other kingdoms with numbers.
  • Prenailia (Conquered ~118 years ago): Prenailia was Vissan's chief trade rival, situated south of the other kingdom and controlling trade along the Cairn mountains by way of the rivers that ran from the great lake to both the northwest and southeast. Besides trade, Prenailia was known for its exquisite jewelers, working with materials from neighborly Arenfrael.
  • Murinor (Conquered ~113 years ago): Murinor was a splinter kingdom of Reginbor that lay in the forested foothills west of Vissan. The Murinor had a long tradition of warrior culture and military strength which proved superior to Vissan's enlisted troopers, but Vissan's magical edge won out after a grueling war.
  • Arenfrael (Conquered ~112 years ago): The kingdom of Arenfrael spread from the northwestern Cairns across the great river. The rich mineral deposits in its mountains made Arenfrael the chief producer of metals and precious metals in northern Tropera, and gave rise to many of the greatest metalworkers and blacksmiths of their time. When Vissan invaded, Arenfrael's prince fled the capitol to a stronghold on the mountainous side of the river, and ceded everything north of the river to Vissan in suit for peace. The lost land became known as Vissan's Aren province, taking many of the best metalworkers with it, while the land to the south and its rich mines became known as the Kingdom of Frael.
  • Craelach (Conquered ~84 years ago): More of a confederation of affiliated fiefdoms than a true kingdom, the League of Craelach covered territory to the east of Prenailia that expanded from high in the Cairns to across the river valley. As a decentralized League rather than a true singular nation, Craelach itself was never at agreement how to respond to Vissan's expansion, whether to fight back, ignore it, welcome their new overlords, or what else, and that wild variance of opinion holds true to this day. Modern Craelach is plagued by holdouts high in the Cairns, whether they be freedom fighters, bandits, or isolationists, who are simply too much trouble for the Vissan military to stamp out once and for all.
  • Weizen (Conquered ~75 years ago): Lying between the original Vissan and Calderia, Weizan was the strongest naval power in Tropera until the kingdom's fall, boasting fleets of fishing and mercantile ships alongside its warships. After the capitol's fall, the queen and her loyalist forces fled to exile in the northern archipelago, where their dreams of rallying to retake their kingdom were dashed by constant conflict with the pirate groups who already used the islands as bases of operations. Today, her daughter rules as the queen of a pirate armada that attacks all ships with equal opportunity.
  • Durvalla (Conquered ~30 years ago): Lying on the northeastern verges of the great forest that bears its name, the Kingdom of Durvalla was a staunch ally of Calderia prior to their fall, and second only to the Calderians in magical aptitude and ability in all of the north. The Durvallans preached harmonious living with nature, and were ruled by a high druid until the kingdom's fall, when he and his inner circle retreated into the depths of the forest, never to be seen again but in rumors and legends.

Vissan's expansion took place in two "Aggressions." The First Aggression began with their war with Prenailia roughly 118 years ago, and ended with the surrender and ceding of Aren about 112 years ago. The territories seized in the First Aggression are generally better integrated into the Empire than those taken in the Second Aggression, which lasted from the conquest of Craelach beginning about 87 years ago and lasting to today, as the Empire presses on toward the conquest of Calderia. Citizens of Aren, for example, typically feel a deeper identity as Vissans than kinship with the people of Frael, whom they tend to see as cowards who abandoned them, while Durvalla remains an unruly addition to the Empire with minor acts of domestic resistance being commonplace and even armed resistance not unheard of, further troubling any attempts to push into Calderia.

I feel like this might not be the best I could do, but hey- have an application.

  • Name: Grendan
  • Age: 23
  • Gender: Male
  • Appearance: Short red hair, wiry build, ENORMOUS mustache (as in, Cervantes enormous). Wears light armor in order to not overburden his mount.
  • Personality: Quite loyal and intelligent (except for tactics, which he generally leaves to his commanding officer), but his stoicism, bluntness, and sarcasm earn him few friends. Competence is perhaps the best way to win his approval, which is the entire reason he follows Sir Tigra.
  • Background: Grendan was Sir Tigra's subordinate in the Fraelian military from the moment he enlisted to the day of her resignation. Upon hearing of her fledgling mercenary company, Grendan left the regular army to rejoin her. Despite this rather extreme loyalty, there are no indications of any form of attraction, romantic or otherwise, between the two at this point.

  • Hit Points: 18 (Growth Rate: 4)
  • Strength: 7 (Growth Rate: 3)
  • Magic: 0 (Growth Rate: 0)
  • Skill: 7 (Growth Rate: 2)
  • Speed: 5 (Growth Rate: 3)
  • Luck: 2 (Growth Rate: 0)
  • Defense: 5 (Growth Rate: 3)
  • Resistance: 1 (Growth Rate: 1)
  • Movement: 7
  • Feat: Flying Mount (Wyvern)
  • Proficiency: Swords D

I'm omitting the Comrade feat because, while Grendan is perhaps TOO loyal to Sir Tigra (my in-character excuse: "She leads her troops better than I ever could. Well, that and she actually gives a damn about civvies, unlike some of the soldiers I've met."), they're unfamiliar with each other outside of military service (and so can't really be said to have developed a Support yet- I see that as generally being a bit more personal than "good working relationship"). Also: Flying swordsman, just because.

Buckley Armstrong

The Armstrongs are a middleweight clan in the Cairn mountains, with kinship bonds on both sides of the old Frael-Craelach border and no particularly high regard for nationality. Some twenty years ago they entered a blood feud (cause long forgotten) with a number of the other clans in the Cairns. Though they are known to do a fair bit of raiding and reiving themselves, Clan Armstrong has recently pledged to turn over a new leaf and to assist royal authority in stamping out the problem of banditry, and to provide its fleet-footed mounted lancers in the service of the King and Authority. That the bandits they are particularly focused on stamping out just happen to be the clans that they were at feud with should come as a surprise to nobody.

"Baird Buck" Armstrong is just one of that yeoman stock, on his first official service as a border lancer. Enthused about proving his mettle, but somewhat wild.

Buckley, lvl 1

  • HP: 16 (+6)
  • STR: 5 (+5)
  • MAG: 0
  • SKL: 7 (+7)
  • SPD: 7 (+7)
  • LUK: 6 (+6)
  • DEF: 3 (+3)

  • MVT: 7

Proficiency: Lance D
Feat: Mounted

So, a light horseman, not particularly tanky but fast and accurate. Future feats would probably emphasize movement through rough terrain, or the ability to mount/dismount at will.
