I liked Stargate. Hated everything else. Hated.

ID 2 would make a great comedy. They just finished rebuilding the White House, and the aliens come and blow it up again.

It has a name: Independence Day Resurgence. Also, plot stuff.

The title of the thread should be

"Independence Day Resurgence (aka Independence Day 2)"

This looks like it's gonna take itself way too seriously.

Independence Day 2: The quest for more money.

Seriously this is a movie that should have never been made and that trailer was quite crappy, I mean seriously they are just banking on nostalgia factor that I do not think is there.

Will Smith isn't in the movie is because he was recruited by the Men In Black and is away on a mission at the time, but the rest of the MIB will definitely help fight the alien menace.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders!

The Bill Pullman speech IS the first films speech.

And what's the problem with a trailer being serious? Is comedy the only reason to watch a film? Is a joke as The Stinger at the end of the trailer some sort of litmus test for quality? The original Independence Day had plenty of humor, in fact I would say it's a very good example of introducing levity into a story without ruining the overall tone.

I, for one, am quite excited. In part because this is a 20 year sequel that embraces the Alternate History that would entail from the events of the first film, rather than just resetting everything to approximate the current modern day.

Yeah the first film was funny, and that's why I wouldn't what the sequel to be too serious. But, huh, it's just a trailer I guess... I didn't expect The Martian to be as funny as it was after all.

[up][up] Nah, it's the same, intonation and all.

I'm still curious as to why they waited more than 15 years to cash in on the first film.

[up][up]Development Hell. This one's been in the works for a LONG time.

Normally I'd do my whole "ehhh they're cashing in on 90s nostalgia" but this thing's been in the works since like 2008 and it just happens to be coming out during a big 90s nostalgia phase.

Supposedly Independence Day originated as a sequel to Stargate before being made into its own story. Potential sequels were talked about almost immediately but Emmerich went on to a series of different films (Godzilla, Patriot) in the time period where it would have been most optimal. An actual story for the sequel started making the rounds comparatively recently.

I checked out the tie-in website and it is pretty interesting what happened during the Time Skip. Of note is the elaboration of the alien skulls in the trailer, there was something of a colony of refugees who escaped a cityship destruction in Africa and there was a war going on against the government in Congo, which only lasted as long as it did (about 10 years) because the local government didn't want to accept help from the new united government.

I'm hoping all the cities weren't restored to how they were before as the site claims, just cause it would be interesting to theorize HOW they would rebuild and what the new cities would look like. I mean, the population of Earth was reduced by a significant percentage in the first film, between destroying major cities and the casualties in the military campaign.

It would be funny if Hiller's death was actually faked by the government for some reason, and Will Smith makes a cameo or third act reveal a la Ender's Game.

[up] For what it's worth, there is specific mention of Las Vegas still being in ruins, complete with a crashed ship, which people visit as a reminder of the war.

Yeah, according to the website it got blown up and was left that way as a memorial.

Also in my honest opinion Stargate the movie sucked. Almost every one of the spin-off shows is amazing, though.

I feel that Independence Day is Emmerich's best film. Most of his other films start really strong but get lost in the second half, suffering from Pacing Issues and a less than inspired resolution. ID 4 is very well paced and manages to continually top itself all the way to the ending, which is hard because you would think after destroying the White House you couldn't go any further.

Another thing is that the cityships are a hell of a lot of mass and the process of gutting them out would take years by itself.

[up] On the bright side, just think of all the resources they provide to be cut up, melted down, and used to build new anti-alien stuff. tongue

So....did they killed off Will Smith's character, in an embarrassing way, as payback for not returning for the sequel or something else?
