Market Street (Arch Center)

Samantha turned around to face the woman upon realizing she had followed them out of the store. Apparently she had noticed Samantha's examining her, or perhaps she was actually working for the place and was wondering why they didn't buy anything. The exact reasoning wasn't her concern.

"Maybe a few things," Samantha explained, "But nothing I really wanted to spend money. We're looking for something rather specific, you see, and as far as I could tell this particular store didn't have it." She glanced around the area. "Though I'm wondering if we're even looking in the right place."

While Samantha spoke, Sophie looked over the newcomer herself. The handcuff, attached or not, coupled with the outfit did make her a little wary. However, apart from that this person didn't look as bad as Sylvia had. Chances were they were probably going to be speaking for at least a little bit, so she would probably be able to form a better judgment about the woman later.

The clouds continued to pile up, the sounds of thunder kept coming, and by now flashes of lightning were making themselves known. The storm all this kept promising, however, appeared to be a ways off yet.

[Hole In The Ground]

Kommissar was once beside Echo, but went ahead. He was tall enough to look over the heads of civilians, and scoured the area for any signs of his target. He wasn't too far in until he heard a yelp.

As it was instinct, he swiveled around and pulled out his gun. A sudden hush of the civilians sounded, and people backed away from him. Echo had a girl in a tight spot involving a joint in the arm.

There was no real danger. The bounty hunter lowered the gun, but kept it in hand. He marched towards the two, and yanked the young girl out of the masked person's hands. The scarred man held her by the arm, and looked her over. Another poverty-stricken person, wearing dirty clothes. She looked up, her eyes starting to fill with tears.

In a second, Kommissar realized she was just a person trying to survive. He'd been in her place before at her age. A scared and scarred little boy being trained to survive without his parents. He'd gotten into trouble before. It was common for him to return to his so-called home empty handed with new cuts and bruises. The days after the war were the worst for him.

Kommissar pushed the girl away, and scolded, "Get moving. Don't try to cross people like us- or things will end up worse for you." The girl listened and ran off into the crowd.

"We need to find that man- he has something. A mask." The bounty hunter rubbed his eyes. "I need it."

[Zan's Diner]

Their pizza had arrived a few minutes ago; it was fresh, all dressed, and to Miyuki, a very strange sight. Akira was thoroughly enjoying himself, however, and was already on his third piece while she nibbled uncertainly on her first. The taste, the texture, the smell were all so alien that, at first, she hadn't even been sure it was food at all. Akira had no such doubts, however. He seemed happy, and although she was loathe to admit it, that made her happy too.

Abruptly, shattering their moment of contentedness, a fireball came out of nowhere, scorching the remaining pizza and just clearing Akira's head by a few inches. There weren't any fireballs in Miyuki's world. There wasn't any 'magic' at all, as far as she was aware. She saw a bright object fly over Akira's head and then it burned where it landed. Kyana might have though it was a minor accident, and maybe it was, but Miyuki interpreted things very differently. It was a weapon, from her perspective. They were under attack.

The fireball had scarcely landed when Miyuki sprang into action, almost faster than could be seen. The long, metal briefcase she'd brought with had been on the seat beside her. It snapped open quickly and she produced a long scimitar from it, made of some strange, dark, gleaming metal. In an instant she was on her feet, knocking her chair away and sidestepping the table, blade in hand. She was very fast, but a careful observer of particular awareness might notice that she wasn't actually touching the ground, but hovering a few inches off it.

Thankfully for everyone involved, however, she did not get far. Akira caught her as she passed by his side of the table, throwing himself around her waist. "NO NO NO WAIT WAIT!!!" He urged. "IT WAS AN ACCIDENT!"

Miyuki stopped, her feet firmly on the ground.

"Yeah... Okay, good." Said Akira, still clutching her tightly. He looked over at Kyana. "You said sorry, right?" He sounded exasperated, to say the least. "It was just an accident, yeah? A misunderstanding!" He nodded at Kyana rather urgently.

For her part, Miyuki didn't say anything, but she looked very angry; clutching her sword with both hands, teeth clenched and with red eyes glaring at her with a burning intensity.

Not entirely dead.

Instinctively and almost just as fast, Joshua shot up from the booth, knocking his coffee mug to shatter on the floor, getting into a defensive manauvre. His right hand hung close to one of the ammo pouches on his belt. Looks like I might actually be a little late. He concluded internally.

Zan's Diner

Xia had eaten her lunch while listening to the others chat and commented, "I've never been here either actually." She was intrigued by Felix's explanation of his home planet and chuckled a bit. Wherever he was from sounded like a strange but possibly fun place. "Recon hm? So see anything suspicious around here?" she asked, taking a sip of some cherry soda she ordered. Her blue eyes glanced out the window, noticing the weather start to get cloudy. She hoped it wouldn't rain as she hadn't brought an umbrella. She turned back and stared at the interesting antics that were going on in another part of the diner involving a girl that looked familiar. Wasn't she the one she told to back off from her dealings with Sylvia?

Kyana jumped bit at the sudden rage of the girl whose table she had hit and was glad the boy was holding her back. Looking quite scared as she seriously didn't expect someone to try and attack her she waved her hands frantically. "It was an accident I swear. I'm not trying to start a fight with you I promise! I um.. I'm still getting used to my powers." she explained, feeling quite embarrassed in the situation. "My um, my name is Kyana. Kyana Aeira." she added, slowly calming down and hoping the girl would too.

[Zan's Diner]
Ulf

The couple from the other table squished into the opposite end of the booth next to Energy and Flamist. The lady of the two was a bit timid but now seemed snug as a rug bug, or was it "bug in a rug." The man hung an inch or two off the cushion but didn't seemed bothered. Gwion squished against him a little harder and the other man took a seat next to him talking something about vehicles.

The bell chimed again and another group of four entered. A man about his age with an afro, a teenaged girl in tow and two women. Both wore black dresses but one was the blonde and the other had a strange red tint to her skin, green hair, and horns. They settled themselves at a both and the teenager picked up the menu, the others glanced around at the other inhabitants. Ulf turned back to his food but something about the new group made him uneasy, he resolved to shoot them a glance every one in a while, just in case.

"So what was the light show about?" he asked offhand to the couple, maybe he'd get the man to say something. Another flash of light struck a crossed the diner in the shape of a fireball, it smashed into a pizza in a nearby booth. Ulf was about to laugh until the female inhabitant pulled out a scimitar and made to exit the booth.

Intent thrummed through the scents in the air like a gas leak, now sated the beast came at Ulf's call this time willing to work with him rather than against him. He let the eyes change, not very useful out of near pitch darkness, but it had one hell of an intimidation factor and some show flair. Something primal about the color yellow maybe.

He stood up as best he could in the cramped booth and pulled his lips back from his clenched teeth and let the growl the beast was using out in a throaty oscillation. A warning.

Zam's Diner

Felix raised his hand. "Hold on. I'm the hero, so I've gotta do everything..." He looked outside. "Watch Rose for me, will you? She's scared of thunder, but she'll be fine as long as you keep talking to her."

With that, he got up and walked toward the fellow with the sword. He felt his revolver and lightsword on his belt—he didn't want it to come to that, but shooting first was usually the best option where he came from. "Whoa, no need to scare the customers. I'm sure this was all an accident. Just put the sword away nice and slow, now..."

Rose, for the most part, looked absolutely terrified, not by the approaching storm, but rather by the slowly oncoming violence...

Energy and Flamist both stood up, Flamist's mask already lit-up and an eerie neon-blue glow coming from behind Energy's googles.

"Combat mode," Energy whispered.

The orbs surrounding him shrieked mechanically, then formed around themselves blue, holographic 3-D shapes. Cones, cubes, spheres and other, more foreign prisms appeared around the lights. Ulf would detect a strange magic, something he'd never seen before and impossible to describe.

Flamist's hands, meanwhile, were already on fire, leaking an uncomfortable heat like someone had just lit a bonfire where she was standing. She looked to and fro, desperately seeking out the source of the threat.

Echo seemed satisfied with how Kommissar had handled the incident, and felt no further comment was necessary. Back to business. Ignoring the various merchants, both stalls and shadowed presences in the crags of ruined buildings, she said, "okay. So. Man in fancy clothes. Money. Masked, or he just carrying the thing? Any other obvious traits?"

[Old City—Old Arena]

The source of Koyel's energy was disappointed. Sito had very cleverly isolated himself from its poison; it would have to, for now, fight fair. Something it had never done well at.

Koyel was still a dangerous foe, however, and Sito had not shielded his mind. The noise his spirit shield would create was automatically filtered out, and Koyel's concious mind didn't even need to examine the primal thoughts that controlled Sito's magic. Koyel was already moving out of the way before Sito completed the spell, and dodged with truly uncanny grace. Then, with a gesture, a serpentine tendril of shining darkness slipped towards Sito. The shield easily deflected it, and Sito's plan to prevent said shield's corruption was quite successful. So, to Koyel's confusion, his magics instead redirected towards the gateway, attempting to redirect it from Nekhril to... nowhere, from a certain perspective.

Koyel put some distance between himself and Born-In-Tree-Sap, hoping to make Sito the more obvious target for whatever was coming, but then attempted to close the distance on Sito.

"Before I knew what he really was, he had a briefcase and showed me the money inside. It was supposed to be my payment. So look out for that too." The bounty hunter scoffed, "Bastard. I wonder what he wants to buy with all that cash."

Zan's Diner
The duo sat up when Sylvia came in, they had recognized her from earlier. Rani tried a friendly wave but the woman didn't see her, so she shrugged it off.
The man sitting across from them finally spoke to them, asking them "what the light show was about".
"Light show? What l-"
Before Rani could finish her sentence, a fastball of fire came flying across the diner and interrupted her. It seemed as if both she and Foster were too stunned to move, but under the table her companion was secretly casting a protection charm for them with one hand, and holding onto Rani's with another. For safety reasons, of course.
In the next three seconds afterwards, at least four people had weapons drawn, the man across from her had yellow eyes and was snarling, and the small girl next to her's hands were on fire.
Fire, screamed her first instinct. oh FUCK.
Without thinking, she dived for the outside of the booth, ramming into Foster like a painful Newton's Cradle and knocking him off the booth.
He collapsed headfirst on the floor.

Echo nodded, keeping an eye out for a man of that description. "Mafia," she said, with a scoff. "Back home we call them Triads. Far as I can tell, same greasy hog monkeys. Tacky. Violent. Top leaders like to pretend they're cultured." She idly cracked her knuckles. "People want to be that? Pathetic."

So far, so competent, and he seems to understand that mercy and kindness can sometimes be the greater cruelty. I just hope I'm not wrong about him — it'd be a shame to have to kill him. She also took a bit more time to consider his scars. He did not earn those scars through stupidity. Or if he did, he learned the lesson that came with them well. Unless, she took a second look at the scars, they're water soluble. Which reminds me...

"Yeah. It's metal and red, and as the designer told me, it's a mix of a- what was it..." Kommissar thought a moment, and licked his lips. "A slasher hockey mask and a knight's helm. Our target might be wearing it." The bounty hunter chuckled at the thought.

"I mostly wear it for intimidation and security. And this." He faced Echo, and turned his head to show the scars. He turned away almost as quickly. "They're ugly. I know. I've lived with it since I was young. That's all I'll say about that." The scar in question was over his right cheek (to onlookers, his left). It was faded, but appeared to be a mix of burn scars and lacerations. It has faded, but still was fairly prominent as it reaches over his eyebrow, nose, and lip.

As they continued on, Kommissar eyed a vendor of a mask shop. The bounty hunter almost laughed at the irony of it. He at first glazed over it, until he caught sight of his mask on the used rack.

He whirled around, and shoved through a queue of possible customers. The vendor poked her head up above the counter when she was face-to-face with a knife. "That red mask. Tell me who sold it."

I know this is a bad way to end a post, but I can't really go on without Echo's reaction.

[Zan's Diner]

On another day, Kyana's apology would have been enough. Miyuki responded very intensely to potential threats, due to both the very nature of her existence and the way she'd been raised, but she was still human at heart, so to speak, and hadn't come here for fight. Had circumstances been a little different, that would have been the end of the event.

But that's not how things worked out.

Suddenly, Miyuki saw threats everywhere. An armed man with a strange sword and a revolver; a masked stranger with flaming hands, her companion with the strange holograms; someone growling... Her first thought was that she'd been ambushed. All these strange weapons would no doubt complicate things, but she was reasonably sure she'd faced worse. Faced with this new situation, she all but forgot that Kyana even existed.

Akira, meanwhile, with his arms still wrapped around Miyuki's waist, turned pale and and looked around at all the suddenly-armed or otherwise frightening strangers around them, and let out a nervous laugh. "Hey, uh, uh, yeah." He stammered, looking up at her. "Maybe... Maybe you should- We should... Listen to... To... You know, those guys!" He gestured vaguely towards Joshua and Felix. "Just a misunderstanding, that's all!"

Miyuki glanced down at him, but didn't say anything. Felix caught her attention by approaching her. "Back off!" She snapped.

"Ah, hey, um, everyone?" Said Akira, somewhere between embarrassed and desperate. "I have an idea. How about we all put our scary things away, and just- just- y'know, relax for a second? Maybe? Please?" He whimpered a little bit, trying to cover his fear with a anxious grin. "You see, um, my friend here, she just gets... Defensive is all! If you don't hurt us, she won't hurt you!" He looked up at Miyuki. "R-right?"

Miyuki said nothing.

"Right?!" Akira repeated, with a great deal more urgency in his voice.

Slowly, reluctantly, she nodded.

Echo looked over at Kommissar, her mask making her unreadable as ever. Burn scars. Given while young. Mask to cover them. Only a surface resemblance, certainly. But still...

That was when Kommissar decided to pull a knife on a shopkeeper. Applying some pressure to a criminal was one thing, but Echo relied on people like the mask seller Kommissar was threatening. "Please, put that away," she said. The tone was polite, but very firm, with a hint of genuine anger. "She did nothing to you."

Then, to the mask seller. "The mask belongs to my friend." She put the requested price on the table, plus some extra. "He was betrayed. So he's pretty angry. But we do need that question answered."

Flamist paused, then looked over where the fireball landed. She reached her hand out.

The small fire that was started was immediately snuffed out. No, not snuffed out, transferred.

The flame turned into a stream, rushing towards Flamist's outstretched hand before curling gently into her palm. There, it formed a spiral shape, which she held as she turned her head towards the scimitar-wielding woman.

Zan's Diner
Rani couldn't breathe in the moment of quiet.
She moved herself over to where Foster was, on the floor, and picked his body up. He was limp.
Her friend was breathing, sure, but unconscious and bleeding a bit from the head. She'd seen him bleed much more before, hell, the day she first met- no, found him in her backyard he was leaking red violently from his mouth. Moments after, she was bringing him to the hospital at the ripe old age of five when she found out his tongue had been cut out. What was left of it was horribly infected and needed to be removed. She never even learned his real name.
She held onto him in the booth, almost like a hug, making sure he was breathing and sighing to herself out of relief. But somehow Rani couldn't stop shaking and shaking, the fear and shock wouldn't leave her, and one tear fell, then another and another, and before she could stop herself she was silently weeping.
Moving here wasn't any safer after all, she kept thinking, in between sobs. I can't let this happen again.

Gwion raised his empty mug in his right hand to signal the waitress.

"Yeah, a pic would be cool," he said to Joshua. OK, he was going to be seeing it for real, soon, but ogling at pics of motorcycles was something he never tired of.

Out of the corner of his eye he noticed an oddly-matched group - a young man with glasses and a red t-shirt, a tall blonde in a black dress, a woman with red skin, green hair and horns and a teenaged woman with dark short dark hair and a white dress - enter the diner and sit in the booth behind them.

He wasn't happy that he had people he didn't know at his back, but he'd set himself up for that when he sat at the booth. Here's hoping they don't cause trouble he thought. He caught a whiff of sulphurous smoke and thought, I guess the diner has an indoor smoking policy after all.

Then suddenly all Hell broke loose. A fireball came out of nowhere and landed in the middle of the table where the young woman with the ill-fitting clothes and the young man with the scruffy jacket were sitting.

A woman's voice yelled, "I'm sorry!" but the couple were already reacting. The young woman moved like the wind, producing a long curving blade, seemingly from nowhere, and jumping up from the table, then her companion pounced on her, grabbing her around the waist while shouting that it was an accident.

Joshua was on his feet even as Gwion's hand closed on the grip of his pistol. There was the sound of shattering crockery over everything else.

A tiny voice in the back of his head was saying The minute I give up the space to move, shit goes down but he didn't have time to heed it - Joshua exiting the seat at least gave him room to twist around to see where the attack came from.

Movement and a growl from behind him told Gwion that Ulf was active; he had no idea what Flamist and Energy were doing but he had no doubt they would be ready to unleash their strange technology. Strange noises and heat coming from behind him suggested that he wasn't wrong.

The source of the fireball seemed to be a young woman with ginger hair who was looking quite freaked out by everyone's reactions. She was waving her hands and saying that it was an accident, that she wasn't used to her powers.

Gwion didn't draw his pistol, but he didn't let go of the grip, either.

The guy with the glasses and the red t-shirt left his table and headed over towards the girl with the sword and tried to talk her into putting the sword down.

Joshua also tried reasoning with her, reminding her that a lot of customers could get hurt.

As Gwion looked toward the girl with the sword, now that it seemed the source of the fireball had no hostile intent, he realised something was wrong. The young couple that Flamist had brought to the table where nowhere in sight.

He turned further and saw the young man on the floor, unmoving, and the young woman nearby.

Shitfire! Gwion thought. What happened to them?

The young man with the scruffy jacket was yammering something in an attempt to calm his companion but Gwion was too concerned about the young mute to pay attention.

The young woman crawled over to the mute and picked him up, pulled him up and sat in the seat with him on her lap. He was clearly unconscious - breathing but non-responsive and his companion was, quite understandably, shaking and sobbing.

Flamist and Energy were still standing, looking at the woman with the sword. Flamist's hands seemed to be on fire and the glowing orbs near Energy that Gwion had - hundreds of years ago, it seemed - first thought were merely holographic decorations, were amped up but, surprisingly, considering Flamist's apparently short fuse, neither had unleashed anything.

"Young lady," said Gwion, turning his head to the woman with the sword, "we have an injured man, here, who needs medical assistance and we don't need any more. Please put your sword away so we can help him."

Ulf

The woman with the scimitar gave a reluctant nod at her companion's offer of peace. Ulf made a point to sit down just as reluctantly leaving the eyes for good measure. He never really reached Grand Jarl material back when he was in a pack but that didn't mean he couldn't try.

A soft scent of blood cut through his concentration, confusion struck him nobody actually threw a blow. He let the beast fade completely and glanced at his companions searching for the source. The couple had vanished, but he found them under the booth. The man was unconscious but live and the woman was bracing his body and shaking. It wasn't a scene he was fond of.

"Young lady," said Gwion from his left, he turned his head to the woman with the sword, "we have an injured man, here, who needs medical assistance and we don't need any more. Please put your sword away so we can help him." Ulf wondered if he had been in law enforcement, he seemed quite adept at conflict resolution.

He inhaled the rest of his steak. "I'll help." he volunteered. "I'm done with lunch and my nerves are getting frazzled, a walk will do me good I think."

Zan's Diner

Gwion released his grip on his pistol and eased out of the booth, picking up his pack as he went. He quickly unzipped it, felt inside it and pulled out a small cylindrical bundle the size of a small soda can. He put it on the table then put a small coil of cord beside it.

"That tarp's two-and-a-half by three metres," he said to Joshua, "that'll be ample to cover a motorcycle, and you can secure it with the cord. It might pay to get cracking, those clouds've got a hell of a lot darker in the last few minutes."

He turned to Ulf, "thanks, that'd be appreciated."

He went over to where the young couple were huddled together. "Ma'am, we'll need to get him medical attention. Ulf and I will help and make sure you're both safe."

He was mindful that his red-irised right eye must make him look frightful, so he gave his most reassuring smile. "Come on, you're in safe hands."

Arch Center

Kris was not surprised when the attendant, an older woman with greying hair, said that they did not have the equipment that she asked for. So it came as an even bigger surprise when the woman said that she could contact their suppliers and organise it.

Five minutes later they were in the staff room at the back of the shop in teleconference with a sharply-dressed young man with a tawny hue to his skin organising the purchase and delivery - to Sir Archibald's room - of the equipment.

Twenty minutes after that, they were back out in the mall and headed for their next stop, a place that specialised in power systems.

Energy looked back, seeing the state of Rani and Foster.

"Flai, watch our backs," Energy said. She nodded, eyes never leaving the threats.

He came over, his orbs coming with him, and stood by the couple.

"Uhh...miss? Your friend is bleeding," he said, stating the obvious. "I can get you two somewhere safe if a fight breaks out."

He contemplated bringing in a machine to treat the mute man. But, since he didn't know what their species and exact physique was, it might do more harm than good.

Zan's Diner
Rani looked around at all of them, eyes still wet, chest still heaving. She only clung to her dear friend even harder.
"I was supposed to take care of him," she finally says, in a hoarse whisper, "he always defended me and this is how I repay him, by- by acting reckless and not thinking straight. What kind of- what kind of a person am I."
