So...like, if I slap caterpillar treads and armor plating on my truck, would that constitute as a tank?

Have you equipped this tanknical with a weapon? [lol]

Heck, just spray-paint a Caterpillar green.

Sans the paint job and addition of armor slabs and externally mounted cameras yes. You have to be a special kind of crazy to craft the Kill Dozer

We should make a Killdozer 2.0. For funsies and Science. I know a guy who has a backhoe with dozer blade front end loader.

Armored bulldozers have actually been something of a specialty in the Syrian war, used by assorted rebels, Assadists, and IS alike for obstacle breaching.

For all the levity, there's something blackly hilarious that the only person killed in the Killdozer's rampage was its driver, when he gave his skull a ventilation opening.

Was he even trying to kill any one though? From what I heard he was mostly pissed off at the buisness not the employess.

Immy: He flattened buildings, put gun ports on his adhoc vehicl, and when you smash a building down that has people in it there is a good chance someone might get hurt or killed. I would say yes he was trying.

But when your dealing with a bulldozer covered in concrete, it is not hard to get out of the way..... its not exactly..... fast.

I mean a dozer is slow enough in the first place.

The fact that he had gunports and didn't just shoot out of it, makes me think he wasn't.

Immy: No visible targets near enough the gun ports and again he smashed down buildings. The chances he wasn't out to hurt anyone is almost nil.

Say, is it true that tanks are becoming/have become obsolete due to how modern warfare works (basically, high mobility trumps heavy armor), and that modern militaries should replace them with such things as the Stryker AFV?

Not by a long shot. What they are not is invincible. They can still do their job at large and just like in the past work best when properly supported. What might be eventually going away is the current generation of tank design which is normal. Tanks have shifted notably since their first battlefield appearances.

Tanks are basically very fast moving, very hard hitting bunkers. The stationary lightly armed bunkers aren't close to being obsolete yet, and they can't even drive to a new location.

And when folks talk about buiding a new Killdozer, I think we should figure out how to make a Killmower. Like, a riding lawn-mower covered in improvised armor.

EDIT: [up] Yeah, tank design has evolved a lot since even WWII, never mind WWI.

Just replace the combine blade with a mine flail. Got about the same reaction from troops that faced it in battle.

[up]I keep wondering if the drivers of those things ever had the chance to mow down people with them.

I still have this sadistic glee of imagining Nazis being chased by a flail death machine.

Tuefel's already answered this question, but no, not at all. MBTs are still extremely useful in a variety of missions, though I would say that they excel at performing breakthrough roles. Their combination of firepower, protection, and off-road mobility makes them a force to be reckoned with. I think it's rather telling that even by the time of the late Cold War when stand-off PGMs were becoming more refined and the AirLand Battle concept was going full tilt the tank was still very important to both sides. Unfortunately due to the absolute inability for me to find FM-100-5 Operations' 1982/1985 version I cannot say for certain what the role they were intended to play in NATO's planning, but I do know that the Operational Manoeuvre Group and Tank Armies were still concepts taken extremely seriously by the Soviets.

They move at less than 2 mph when flailing, so they'd be easy to run away from.

That smoke coming out of the hatch doesn't look good. I wonder if it will be like the last one. Knocked out of action and in need of repairs at a depot.
