BUMP! I posted this in the discussion for the article, but why were the folder titles for "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue deleted?

[up] My guess is that they were overly long, which I agree with.

They also made quickly finding the folder you wanted a bit of a chore unless you used CTRL + F.

As long as the first words of the folder are the normal name of the folder, I'm fine by it. Which is why I miss the "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue folders. I don't think it obstructed clarity unless you find the appropriate folders solely by the length of the title.

I don't know if this has been expressed before, but if a page is going to have SDFTs, it would make more sense if the SDFT had to meet all of the following criteria:

  • Begins with the normal name of the folder. ("Contains" would be searchable, but a reader shouldn't have to hit CTRL+F just to find a header, especially when you can collapse all the folder titles. If they begin with the normal name, then the list is easily scannable.)
  • Isn't absurdly long, unless the trope being demonstrated has something to do with being absurdly long (which should be a very rare situation).
  • Has something to do with the folder title. (This is less self-explanatory, but like, what does Literature have to do with leaving town on a motorcycle? I could see something like "Literature became a successful author and retired from her job to write full-time. / Music went through a rough period in the eighties, but later recovered and is now stronger than ever." Stuff like that. Otherwise it just seems like a wacky, pointless quirk that doesn't actually add any humor or meaning to the article.)

And I'll reiterate that even after all those details above, I still think SDFTs are stupid because I'm a party pooper and would vote for removing them even if they fit all the criteria I listed above.

Double-post for an unrelated point: Have we already brought up Tyop on the Cover here?

Ironically, and hypocritically considering my stance on SDFTs, I actually... kind of like these ones.

I'm on the fence, leaning toward removal.

I think they're fine as long as they follow my own very objective opinion that they're clear enough.

If they start with the right name, and are in what can be read as English without too much trouble, then I find them fine. Something short before the name (not longer than the normal name of the folder) like on Spell My Name with a "The" still works, though (which is also very obvious).

Not sure if you were addressing Tyop, but if you look at them, they're all deliberately misspelled. So while I subjectively like them, they definitely don't fit any of the objective criteria we've discussed in this thread.

That's exactly why I phrased it like, "can be read as English without too much trouble."

Hrm. Well, I don't feel strongly either way. Wouldn't hurt to have more than one-and-a-half opinions before taking any action.

Tyop on the Cover is very readable, and the folder titles look like themselves until you look carefully - same length, same first and last letters. Plus it makes me laugh. I vote keep it.

Devil's Advocate argument: You can't CTRL+F any of the folder titles.

That said I'm probably just going to vote with the majority on this one. Seems we're leaning toward keeping it in this case.

I have to fall on the "sucking the fun out of the wiki" side and say that primary articles should never have SDFTs, because they encourage people to spread the idea. There is no "good" use that won't inspire a dozen idiotic copycats.

I have mentioned it before—can somebody fix the folder title for Anime in Long Title? It still continues to depend on the folder title for Western Animation.

Oh, what a coincidence. I stumbled upon this not long before I find this thread near the top of the forum.

All the folder names are juvenile at best, and cringeworthy and unfunny at worst.

I like the idea of the joke for Accentuate the Negative, but I think they're all too long. Most of the folder titles could easily be shortened. For example:

Anime & Manga: For immature weeaboos who can't admit they like comic books for children (redundant).

Comic Books: Just stories about men in bondage gear beating each other.

I also think that insulting the audience in this case is wrong. Not because it isn't funny, but because it does not feel right as self demonstrating in this case. Insult the category.

[up]I agree with that. Insulting people feels misdirected. That's just random insulting. I don't think insulting the categories would fit either, since that's also just random insults. That's not focusing on the negative aspects; that's making stuff up and placing it where it doesn't belong.
