So does this not count optional kills?
I would figure a Titanfall soldier wouldn't count because 2013 is the end of the qualifying period, and Titanfall came out 2014.
Question for a clarification... With regards to the Link example, are you saying protagonists that kill zombies/mutants/machines get to count those as "kills", or are we just saying only something human(or it's alien equivalent) is counted as a kill?

Edward Kenway. The dude kills literally boatloads of people.
Playingthe Imperials in Empire at War. You can wipe out whole planets, so you can have a death count in the billions.
From just 2013? Without a doubt the protagonist of your choice in Dead Island: Riptide. You can slaughter thousands upon thousands in the game.
All time? What about Armored Core: For Answer? Can't you rack up a kill count approaching forty million?

Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than Yours
Any species counts as a kill, intentional or accidental. Regardless of whether it's optional or not - if there's an ending where they didn't kill hundreds/thousands, and an ending where they did, count the one that matters but specify. (Evil!Protagonist killed x)
One more thing, protagonist. An individual. No armies, militias, unified groups. The kills have to be achieved/pinned/largely blamed on said individual to count.

Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).Well technically she's still using an army to carry out the deed, and the amount of people she's actually killed personally, while high, probably doesn't go higher than a couple of thousands. The swarm did the rest for her.
But since the Swarm are a hivemind, Kerrigan killing someone with a zergling is no different from a human killing someone with their fist. She's not just ordering them to kill, she's actually doing the deed herself.
All contestants are Lucky That Orcs Must Die 2 came out in 2012. Otherwise, the Warmage and the Sorceress would dominate.
How do we count pcs who face hordes of respawning minions? The number of those killed in a game ranges from 0 to infinite.

I have a message from another time...That still falls apart, because it's the Cerebrates who are giving the orders in Starcraft I, and in the sequel the queens existed for that purpose of micromanagement and actual unit orders. Granted, Kerrigan has proved that she more or less has the same exact capabilities of command, meaning she could've had a small group of elite broods under her direct command, but it's definitely not the entire swarm.
edit, never mind I see the 2013 mandate now.

How about Mario he killed so many enemies.
I'm confused is this just 2013 or through the ages up to and including 2013?
Batman Ninja more like Batman's Bizarre AdventureI'm going to say Edward Kenway as well.
How would we handle games that have infinitely respawning enemies? There's no real way to have a valid comparison. Sure, Edward Kenway sinks whole ships full of people, but the story-significant kills only number in the dozens at most.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I dunno. Edward kills a lot of people, but he kills on a man-by-man basis, and limited by the tech of his era. surely there are protagonists who kill on a larger scale, with more powerful weaponry or against larger hordes?
Such as The Wonderful 100. Okay, sure, they're a team of 100 or so, rather than one protagonist. But even dividing the kills 100 ways, they rack up quite the body count, especially with the Comet in mission 009-A. (I think the count was around 26,000 space battleships)

I have a message from another time...Armored Core For Answer you can get up too 100 million in just civilians.
But I think we need to keep track of story important kills and canon endings.

Oh really when?Yeah if you go the Complete Monster route in For Answer it gets pretty high.
How much does Lara kill in the Tomb Raider Reboot?
Probably a lot by her scale, but I'll bet she loses out to people in higher-tech universes, or even Edward Kenway, if we're going for volume.
I have a message from another time...Dunno, do Kenway's kills all count?
The ship ones I mean.
I mean he didn't man every single cannon himself, I don't think you can claim the casualties from sinking a frigate are entirely on him.
Oh really when?Find a Dynasty Warriors game, pick a warrior, any warrior. On a typical stage, they get a higher killcount than most games have in their entirety.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatEDF mocka both the number and small size of the foes encountered in those games.

Samus Aran blew up how many planets?
Oh wait, just 2013. Nevermind.

I'm pretty sure that Link IS a PC, and therefore doesn't count.
A boon to those who'd like to know who the biggest manslayer is this year (last year).
Find out what player character has the highest body count by the end of his or her video game, taking games from 2013-to now.
Silent, faceless avatars do not qualify. The character must be distinguishable as a protagonist and not merely an extension of the player's will.
Ex: Link, from Zelda would count - he faces armies of demons, mutants, etc. A Titanfall soldier would not.
