Retrogaming : market study questionnaire

Feel free to answer it (or not), we've tried to make it as open as possible so that even people who don't play a lot can still answer (somewhat). Also this was translated from french so it's possible that there's some dodgy vocabulary and syntax here and there (if you spot errors you can also post about them here and I'll try my best to correct them).

Also a note to moderators, feel free to move this topic somewhere else if you think that it should belong in another forum.

In order for there to be actual discussion in this thread, what did everyone answer for your three favourite retro games (assuming this survey isn't supposed to be blind, that is).

Mine were (in no particular order):

• Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
• The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
• Metal Gear Solid

I didn't realize Oo T was considered retro now...

Do N64 games still look modern to you?

As my three favorites (because I've took the survey as well), I answered Shadow of the Beast III, Monkey Island 2: Le Chuck's Revenge and Riven. And it was really hard to pick only three.

But we wanted to include only three otherwise it would've been a total mess to recoup all the answers.

Edit : also don't hesitate to pass it around to friends/family who may be interested, even if they aren't into retro games a lot, we still designed the survey so it can still be answered by people who don't play too often, and besides we need all sorts of answers, the more the better.

I put down Super Mario Bros. 3, Fallout, and Ocarina of Time.

I'd say N64 definitely counts as retro. It's nearly twenty years old.

Should emulation count as the system doing the emulating or being emulated? For example, should playing Super Mario Bros. on the Wii Virtual Console count as Wii or NES? Does using espxe (PS 1 emulator) count as Playstation 1 or PC?

I put Castlevania, Vampire Savior and Mystery Dungeon.

For my "reasons for favoring retro games", i had cited decrease in the quality of modern games as well as "for research/ knowledge and appreciation of the medium" in other.

For my expectation of video games, I had written "the interactivity to non-interactivity ratio should go a great deal in favor of the interactivity side. Games, as a general rule, should not take you out of the action for 5+ minutes at a time each time just for cinematic flair or exposition", and "reproductions and rereleases of classic games should strive to provide as much of the original context as possible (For example, AttractModes, properly looped and mastered soundtrack, visuals and game mechanics also reproduced as closely to the original as possible) but also provide arrange modes and bonus material for newbies and affectionatos alike."

Balmung : emulation counts as the system which you're emulating. If you're playing NES on your PS 1 (completely arbitrary example), you're still playing a NES game.

Meklar : it's true that this survey is mostly targeted towards console gamers, since for the market study we're working for college but it will also be useful to a couple of local game shops, said game shops selling primarily console games and not PC games. And if you've checked what I've posted as my top three games a few posts up here then you know I'm about as thrilled about it as you are. Sorry...

Just did it. It was fun. I am a retro gamer. You can blame my low end system & love for games for that. Lol. My 3 - Street Fighter 3 , Mario Kart 64 , Super Mario World .

Those that were 2D, such as Puzzle League or used flat models such as Paper Mario look on par with modern stuff. In general though, no. (a lot of them look adequate, sometimes pretty good even, but you can tell they are 64 bit)

EDIT: ...And why do you mention Ocarina, but not Metal Gear Solid? They came out in the exact same year.

Heh, I put down Yoshis Island, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, and Pokemon Crystal as my favorites. Wasn't too sure on the third one, and, in hindsight, I probably should've put down a Kirby game, but, thinking about it, I feel like I might have just been putting one down more out of nostalgia than anything (since Kirby was one of those seminal game series for me^note but then again, so was Pokemon, hence the CONFLICT OH GOD—one of the very first video games I ever played was Kirbys Dreamland 2, and I even just recently downloaded it on my 3DS...I'm not sure it holds up quite as well now as I thought it was then, but I still love it).

But yeah, I really enjoyed taking that survey. Thanks for the opportunity!

Dang, I'd forgotten the definition when the question of my three favourite titles came up, so none of mine qualify for retro games. >_<

My answers were:

• Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
• Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal

Two (one if you use the JP release date for Pokemon GSC) of my answers don't predate the PS 2 as I had originally thought, as I had it in my head that the PS 2 came out in 2001 instead of 2000.

Because those are my favorite games from 8-bit, 16-bit and 64-bit. Kinda wish there was 4 so I could hawk my love of Majoras Mask some more but to me, Conkers Bad Fur Day was the N64 game
