Discussion thread.

Roleplay thread.

Hello, this is an interest check/sign up thread for an RP called Journey Through the Multiverse. As some of you know, this is based on the RP with the same name that was on this site a few years ago. There's a whole story behind the creation of this RP, but for now, let's move onto the plot.

Plot

In many worlds, there is a form of energy that people use, commonly referred to as "the Power". Throughout these worlds, it has been given different names: chakra, mana, magic... in other worlds, it is more technically advanced and provides tools and weapons that can turn the tide of battle. Rarely do these two things exist in the same world... but there are some worlds that lack the mystical energy and the technological advancements. Our world is one of those worlds. We live here, unaware of the existence of the other worlds, though we still read their stories through books, movies, shows, and games, discussing them with friends and family and people on the internet through fan forums and such, unaware of what's going on out there.

For there are two factions, both gathering tech and powers for their own purposes. One faction, Dai-Shocker, takes people, power and technology from other worlds, all in the hopes of one day ruling the multiverse with an iron fist. The other faction, the Red Pirates, explores the deep meaning of "the Power" and tries to unlock its true potential, eventually finding a way to give "the Power" to worlds that lack it, through shards- a crystallized copy of another being's spiritual energy, which lets them grant the population from worlds without magic or technology the ability to have one of them.

This massive development was the straw that broke the camel's back, and a massive war followed, one between Dai-Shocker and the Red Pirates. Thousands of lives and even worlds were lost as each faction tried to destroy itself, until the final battle, in which the Red Pirates were destroyed. However, on a last attempt at giving the multiverse a chance to fight back, they released upon the Earth thousands upon thousands of shards, giving the humans who once thought their stories were fiction to become the heroes- or the villains- of a journey through the multiverse...

Information

Hello! Thank you for reading the plot. My name is Stratofarius, and I'll be your GM. Like I said at the beginning, this RP is based on a previous RP from this very same forum, and I'd like to explain to both newbies and experts the reason behind my 'revival' of this concept.

At the beginning of my time here at TV Tropes, I could barely write a post that was more than two sentences. Normal roleplaying terms like ghosting were foreign concepts to me. I could not write a decent character if my life depended on it. But through this RP, I evolved. I became a much better writer, and also managed to find a lot of new friends that are still with me to this day.

This is why I'm bringing back this RP. This will be a lighthearted, fun RP that newbies and experts can play in together. Is this your first time playing? Come right in. Is this your tenth year in the site? You're just as welcome. This is a place for players to learn while having fun.

However, just because we're welcoming newbies, that does not mean we do not have some rules.

  • Listen to the GM. Look, this RP is going to be a little loose, and you guys are gonna be more than just players, but it's important to listen to me, since it's my job to make sure that you guys are having a pleasurable experience. Always ask me before doing something big- especially if it involves all the players- and don't be afraid to ask me some questions, be it during the sheet-making proccess or during the actual game. Also, I am reserving the right to reject four particular people based on the previous history I had with them and this RP. These people should know who they are, and they should know why I'd prefer that we stayed our separate ways.
  • No godmodding, metagaming, ghosting, autohitting, sueing. 'Wait, wait, GM, what are all those terms?!' Alright, let's go part by part. RP is based a lot on the idea of 'attempting'. I try to hit you, you tell me if it works and how does your character react. Godmodding is when you play a character who's unbeatable- and that's not fun for everyone. Metagaming is when you take information from out of the game and use it in game, like hearing a player talk about his character's fear of lions and then having your character mention that or use that against him right after that. Autohitting is when, instead of writing 'I try to hit you' you write 'I hit you and you die'- always leave it open- and that leads into ghosting, when you always dodge everything, and when you write for another person's character without his authorization. And finally, sueing is having a character that's perfect at everything. Come on guys. No one's perfect at everything. If you still have questions, ask them to me! And do read this thread, it's filled with hints and tips written by other experient players.
  • Don't be overpowered. Overpowered is, for example, when all characters can lift cars, and I can lift the entire British Isles with my pinky. Don't. Just don't.
  • No drama, and don't be a pest. These are two similar rules. Let's suppose you don't like something another player does. You should bring it up in a concise and polite manner, always trying to help the fellow player. But let's supposed you don't do it like that. Let's suppose you start a fight, or you start yelling at the player, or you— don't. Just don't. Take it to private messages, work out your differences. Do not clog the threads with personal fights. If you don't like what happens in a game, keep it in a game. Don't bring it over to other threads, they have much important things to care about.
  • And finally, we're all in this together. Roleplaying is all about collaborative fiction. It's not about making this interesting for just you, it's about making this interesting for you and everyone else. We're here to have fun together, so be respectful.

An additional rule, this one directed at expert players, is that be a mentor. The standards are not going to be as high in here as in other R Ps. We're not asking sheets that would make Shakespeare cry. We're not asking for posts that would make speechwriters gasp in awe. This is a learning place. So don't yell at newbies. Try to teach them about how you write, about how you do things. Because this newbie you're yelling at could have one day been your best writing pal, participating in amazing R Ps you now don't have the chance to be a part of. Remember: we were all newbies once.

Sign Up Sheet

Newbies, before you write this sheet, don't be afraid to base this on yourself. This is what we call a self-insert, and in some other R Ps, it is frowned upon, but here?... ^do it! If you want to write you finding a shard and gaining the power to be invisible, do it! Anything goes- just as long as it's not too overpowered.

  • Name: (It can be your real name or a made up name, use whatever you feel like using.)
  • Age:
  • Sex:
  • Appearance: (You can describe your character's appearance, or you can find a picture on the internet and use it as your character's appearance.)
  • Chosen Power/Tech: (What powers will your character be gaining from the shard he/she finds? They can be magical or technological, but most importantly, remember to have drawbacks. If your character has a shard that makes him/her super-strong, maybe it also makes him/her hear voices. Always put in where the powers are from, and they should be from a fictional character. Your chosen shard may also come with the voice and conciousness of the character it comes from- if you want. Example: shard of Edward Elric, gives you alchemy, you get Edward's voice in your head)
  • Alignment: (Are you a goody goody two shoes? Are you an evil gal with no morals? Or are you somewhere in the middle, a good guy with bad plans or a bad guy who wants to do good?)
  • World of Origin: Earth (Initially, everyone's first character is from Earth. But as time passes and we allow for more characters, you will all be able to choose where the character comes from.)
  • Personality: (How would this character act around others and by himself/herself.)
  • Bio: (A little backstory- who your character is and what was he/she doing up until the day he/she found the shard?)

Player List

Can't wait for your sheet. Feel free to leave in any questions, comments and criticisms!

Out of curiousity, is there any particular era in history these characters have to hail from? Or can they come from whatever point in time the creator wishes?

Question: if there's going to be travel within the multiverse (I'm assuming) will there be an in-game means to do so, or should the players use their powers for it? This is for character design purposes.

Interested, I'm going to try and think of a character. But I was wondering, the powers the characters will be getting from the shards are powers that come from some character in fiction, right?

Yes I have. I have piqued interests, though I'm trying to decide on a powerset for Nicholas (Should I return to Ultraman Zero? Use a power from one of his spin-off counterparts? Finally use Kamen Rider Knight's Advent Deck, the power set I used for JTTM's inspiration?

Based on prior experiences with the game series, it usually works so that powersets can either be based on a specific person in fiction or a powerset type in fiction. So you could have, for example, The Ripple in general, or you could use a specific character's abilities, skills and/or technology, for example very early on someone gained Simon Belmont's skills and whip.

Also in terms of transportation if you do have a power or tech that might let you travel through space or worlds, great. If you don't one will be provided for you.

It used to be that Super Weight 3 was the limit. The problem is that Super Weight is only useful for comparisons between characters within a single universe, and gets wildly inconsistent when used for crossover comparisons.

It doesn't really help that at least some works being crossed over have their own Random Power Ranking, or one compiled by a fansite.
