The current page image does nothing to actually illustrate the trope. The mythological allusion is obvious, but the image itself is just...a severed head.

Fixed the tag. Remember to write the page title in CamelCase next time.

I don't know how you would illustrate this.

I just checked the page note to see if this image already had a discussion. Apparently, it has.

The pic was added back before we codified the guidelines on consensus for images. I'm still sticking with Keep Until Better Image Suggested...even if it's not a great illustration, Medusa's well-known enough that it's better than nothing.

I know that technically, Medusa is an example, but it just doesn't feel right.

I like it. The effect of medusa's gaze has been extremely well-known for centuries at least. Also, the caption should be considered part of the Brown Note page image.

I'd have to see better.

Hmmm... The only example off the top of my head is the Dubstep Gun from Saints Row IV, but that wouldn't be easy to show.

Lets see... There's a scene from Percy Jackson and the Olympians that shows Medusa turning a victim to stone, but I can't grab any screencaps.

I wonder... There's a part in Soul Eater where Crona's poetry is so depressing that it makes EVERYONE who reads it loses the will to live. If that scene is in the manga, and not just the anime, I'm sure I could dig up a picture of that.

What about the Pied Piper of Hamelin? [1] [2] [3]

The "psychological effect" seem better illustrated

Keep until Better Image is suggested for me.

Even if we agree that Medusa herself is a good example of the trope, this particular image doesn't communicate anything about her gaze.

Personally, I'd rather drop the image in the meantime than leave it up and confuse people until we find a better one, which, by the sound of things, is likely to be a while.

Looking at the examples, perhaps the second panel of this, although it's a bit texty.

Yeah, I'm pretty much anti any Medusa suggestions now.

I'd be against Medusa pics as well, since her petrifying gaze is more of an effect of No Eye in Magic rather than an actual Brown Note anyway.

I think one of the God Of War games has you use Medusa's head as a weapon. It slowly petrifies enemies and her eyes glow when active.

[up]I'm getting too much of a Deadly Gaze feel out of that pic.

No comments on the Piper of Hamelin suggestions? Oh well.

Anyway, something I found on YT

I think something inanimate inflicting the effect is a straighter play of the trope, like a video tape that lowers your INT stat if you watch it, or a book that blinds you if you read it, or whatever.
