People die every day. Some of them are famous, some important, many newsworthy. This thread is for announcements of deaths in the news, discussions of the legacy of those recently deceased people, and memorials of same.
Please observe the usual rules about posting ettiquette and note that this is in On-Topic Conversations.
To start with, the last of the original Von Trapp Singers has died, Maria Von Trapp, 99, in Vermont. (This is the daughter of Captain Von Trapp, not her stepmother who was also named Maria. In the musical, they called her Louisa.) http://news.yahoo.com/maria-von-trapp-99-dies-vermont-005546425.html
2023 mod note:
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.
This doesn't mean that you can't discuss their life or legacy, or express an opinion as to whether they escaped justice for their actions. But if that starts to become a longer conversation, there are other OTC threads that may be more appropriate.

RIP to the Token Good Teammate of Televangelism.

I read about his early life, and funny he was almost expelled by Bob Jones until Bob Jones Sr. gave him a good talking and told him to get serious about his studies or he would end up a poor country Baptist preacher somewhere out in the sticks. Well, 80 something years later, and he did take that advice.
He had some questionable views on Jewish people but it sounds like he sincerely regretted it and apologised in later life. Plus Westboro Baptist Church didn't like him, which only speaks in his favour as far as I'm concerned.
Avatar from here.I may not like televangelists, but Graham's an exception; actually spreading the Gospel through love and not greed and hate.
ᜇᜎᜈ᜔ᜇᜈ᜔|I DO COMMISSIONS|ᜇᜎᜈ᜔ᜇᜈ᜔Funny thing about Billy Graham; as an evangelical Christian, he of course opposed communism... but he had a weird soft spot for Kim Il-Sung.

I wonder if it has to do with the belief of wanting to redeem him as a person.
I wonder if Kim Il-Sung's parents being evangelical Christians themselves had anything to do with it....
Maybe he probably tried to appeal to his former religious upbringing.
That sucks.

Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.Sir Roger Bannister: First person to run a mile in under four minutes dies at 88
His time of three minutes 59.4 seconds, set at Iffley Road sports ground in Oxford on 6 May 1954, stood as a record for just 46 days but his place in athletics history was assured.
Bannister also won gold over the same distance at the 1954 Commonwealth Games and later became a leading neurologist.
He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2011.
A statement from his family said: "Sir Roger Bannister, died peacefully in Oxford on 3 March, aged 88, surrounded by his family who were as loved by him, as he was loved by them.
"He banked his treasure in the hearts of his friends."
IAAF president Lord Coe, who ran a mile world record of 3:47.33 in 1981, said: "This is a day of intense sadness both for our nation and for all of us in athletics.
"There is not a single athlete of my generation who was not inspired by Roger and his achievements both on and off the track."
In his honour:

Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Ken Dodd was essentially the last jester. He went out of his way to create a modern interpretation of the historical entertainers, silly clothes, tools such as tickling sticks and unpretentious rapid-fire jokes.
Such an influencial man who brought glamour to the classiest woman ever.
