Changed w/o discussion: Stop Being Stereotypical

The image for Stop Being Stereotypical appears to attract self-appointed Moral Guardians who remove it without discussion. It was previously deleted by Homepie on the 17th of April 2012 ("very racist, no thanks"), and more recently removed on 6th Nov 2013 by rodneyAnonymous ("not censoring stuff is one thing, having a racial slur at the top of an article is another").

I've restored the image for now, but I'm not sure what is the best long-term response for this. Locking the page seems to be a bit extreme, and it's not sure if the current image can be improved upon or not. So I'm punting the ball upstairs.

Thoughts?

Being called a "self-appointed Moral Guardian" is insulting. You really want to take a stand for having the word NIGGER at the top of an article?! Ooookay...

It's not making the page better. It's not an excellent illustration that justifies the cost. It's not like it was chosen by consensus or something, it was added unilaterally. IMO putting it back is edit warring, this thread should have been made and resolved before that action was taken. Racial slurs (especially that one) are in a different weight class than profanity, that's more offensive than "cunt" even. I move to pull it (again, third time's the charm).

Would it work to just censor the word?

Ooh boy.... this is a doozy of a flame pickle.

[up] why don't we just say "Stop Stereotypes" or something? Drop the N word all together and make everybody happy, assuming we keep the image in question.

I'd prefered the alternate image from the last thread anyways, of the two youths.

I feel I have to point out we have tropes whose names are intentionally offensive (Half-Breed Discrimination) because it's designed to evoke that response.

[up][up] that is much better than the other one just for the simple text wall in the splash bubbles, oy.

I think it could work providing we have a good caption, as to explain the gamer stereotype. Actually I'm kind of unfamiliar with said stereotype, As I've seen hardcore gamers run the gamut from lazy man-boys to uhh.... hot 20 something year old Filipino girls next door. ^_^'

Anyone can add images to pages that doens't have them,(and doesn't have a note saying otherwise). Removing or changing them need discussion. We discussed it and we didn't get any consensus to remove or change it.

I also believe the artist chose to use the word "niggarism" to make a point, to identify the destructive and negative behavior that he wants to see crushed. I'm not fond of the language either, but IMO removing or censoring it would be like sticking a bra on "Birth of Venus".

[up][up] That sums it up nicely. I understand the sentiment, but it's a sensitive area. The gamer one won't push as many buttons.

It's supposed to invoke offence, okay fine but can we do it towards an Acceptable Target rather than taking a fairly flamey route?

An article being titled Half-Breed Discrimination is not even close to the same kind of thing as half of the words in a page image being "nigger". Removing it would be "like sticking a bra on The Birth of Venus"?! That's a preposterous analogy.

It is simply not true that "Anyone can add images to pages that doens't have them, (and doesn't have a note saying otherwise). Removing or changing them need discussion." Discussion is not mandatory. Any random person adding any random image to an article does not confer some special status on it.

Even without the slur, it's just not a good image.

[up]Still not cool to unilaterally pull it without discussion. The proper procedure is to come here and go "Hey guys, this image isn't kosher for reason X, let's pull it and replace it with something else." Pulling without discussion tends to piss everyone off and makes people assume you're a troll/Moral Guardian.

As to the image suggested, that is better than the current, but I want to wait for more suggestions

Pull the damn image and find something new or use nothing, just make a choice because I'm real doubtful that should stay up if it's that contentious regardless of if it's good or not.

Here's my feelings. The current one is definitely a powerful image, and it captures the trope very well. It's a bit cluttered. But "Nigger" is a very, very loaded word, and I think that the visceral reaction to having it in the image itself is detracting from the effectiveness of the image on the page.

The other suggestion from the same artist ( the two boys) is an even clearer illustration of the trope, and it's a clearer, simpler image as well. But again, having "nigga" as part of the image is going to lessen the images effectiveness as a page image, because many people will see only that word.

The Dork Towers "Gamers for hygiene" one isn't anywhere near as emotionally powerful, but it's just as effective as an illustration of the trope.

My vote is for "Gamers For Hygiene"

[up]I'm going to go with this. While the current is a very good illustration, we also have to keep the Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgment in mind. The current is something that could cause controversy and distraction from the trope itself, and honestly while it is a good example, it's not such a good example that it's worth putting up with all the trouble it might cause.

The only trouble this image causes is this thread.wink

Still thinks the current image illustrates the trope best. The niggerism helps to show the trope. The nigger in that image doesnt mean "black" or "african-america", it means nigger.

Quoting an example differentiating it in the same way.:

  • First Time Felon: Calhoun, explaining his views to Yance, quotes Chris Rock:
—>Calhoun: "There's a war going on in this country. It's between black people and niggers.''

And the pulls were meaningless? Look, I know people like this because it's incendiary in what message it means to put across but short of admin fiat, I don't see why it should be there if this thread is the result. Might be a minor thing sure but that Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgement is there for a reason.

The trouble the current image is causing is that twice, it's been removed from the page without discussion because it offended someone badly enough. That's a problem.

Yeah, I like the image enough that I'd prefer it, but at this point I think I'm sick of the headache and would rather replace it.

It helps that this time there's actually a suitable (though in my opinion, inferior) replacement. But the drop in quality for me is offset by the lack of headache-ness.

I don't think Rodney Anonymous or Homepie removed the image because it offended them, more likely they removed it because it could possibly offend someone else.

Not going to quote rjung, but...
