How Faster Than Light Travel Works
FTL drives in this game work as follows: The special engines each ship are equipped with allow them access to another space-time where distance is much shorter than in our own universe. Once accessed, the ship "jumps" in and subsequently dropped out back into normal space. How long you can remain in this jump space, and thus how long it takes you reach your destination, depends on how advanced your technology is and how powerful your specific engine is. A weak or primitive one can only travel for several hours, taking it about one lightyear, before dropping it's ship back into normal space until it recharges. The cool down time varies from the engine type and how advanced they are. It can be anywhere from 30 minutes to 20 hours. A better one can stay on for almost 24 hours, in which case the ship will have traveled six lightyears.
Because ships frequently have to go in and out of jump space to reach their destination, there are many space stations or colonies in otherwise uninhabited star systems that act as harbors for ships to refuel, rest, and make sure they're going in the right direction.
Your adventurers will probably start at one such station, about to sign-up as crew members for the ship.
Dating
For simplicity's sake, we'll be using the standard Gregorian calendar for dating and the standard 24 hour day for time management. It is currently the year 3555 AD.
Where Are We? Half of the game will take place at the Galactic Nations, the future version of the UN, which is located on the space colony Tranquility around Earth. The other half will be zipping around the galaxy with a trade ship having adventures!

So what nation would like to have some sort of trade agreement with the Society where they send artists and philosophers to improve other people's cultures?
How does superlumial communication typically function?
Argh, stupid "history" section. Stupid "name" section

I'll probably have to alter my species somewhat.
Communication lags would be really messy.
Well, the Grexians would probably have at least one Diplomatic caste member there, but posing as a high ranking member of the "mercenary company" instead of an actual national diplomat. So he wouldn't actually be attending most of the big diplomatic talks, I'd imagine.
@Strat: Grexia is trying to pretend they aren't actually a nation, so not them.

You are reading this.In simplest form: Record your message, put it on a ship, ship goes to destination, broadcast message to recipient.
And star systems are usually how far apart, again?
The closest star to Earth is Alpha Centauri, technically three stars, which is about 4 light years away, with the second and third closest being 6 light years. That third one is actually closer to Alpha Centauri than we are.
Of those only Centauri known to have a planet, a volcano world if I recall. So even if you have stars close by, there is a strong chance you'll just be jumping there to jump somewhere else. A cosmic rest stop.
Ok then.
I was mostly checking to see how much communication lag would be inherit in the infrastructure.
So it would be a bit like the days when sending a message to another continent meant waiting weeks or months for a response.
Yeah, pretty good description. Technology from the future, mail service from the 18th century.
The Pony Express IN SPACE!
The Rakasha are an almost friendly group, mostly interacting through trade. Some might be distrustful because of their talent for creating skilled spies and being a culture that is heavily invested in wealth, but they are probably seen as harmless. Basically, if you've stumbled upon their home system, they would have given you their business card, offered you a triad of spies at a nifty discount, then sent you right back out.
Tourism is pretty bad over in the Ras System.
"Evii is right though" -Saturn "I didn't know you were a bitch Evii." -Lior ValThe Greys may or may not have accidentally created and unleashed biomechanical space kraken onto the universe.
Depending on if anyone wants to make use of that as a plot point.
They've also got angry tripod dreadnoughts. That have little friends.
All of whom have the compassion and understanding of Glados.
The above mentioned Kraken-things would be these adapted for both space and self-replication.
So if they exist, they could be anywhere. Huge things- the most nasty powerful things that an entire species of robotics and cybernetics experts could devise.

If it helps anyone decide whether or not their race/faction would get along with the Sirian Union, they do value warriors to a great degree (it's only natural with their past), but they also understand the value of other fields. They're possibly a little eager to prove that they can do more than act as muscle, as well as attempting to legitimise (and maneuver) themselves as a galactic power. Of course, that doesn't change the fact that one of their main contributions is to PMCs and military agreements.
Unfortunately, I think that the Rakasha's relationship with them will be a little... tainted due to their spat, as Evil Paladin and I have agreed. Of course that hostility isn't open, but I think I'm correct in imagining some unkind words are probably muttered behind closed doors. Hopefully they'll do better with everyone else.

I imagine my Kurasne would mesh well with your canines. Once they find each other that is.

The United Nations equivalent (that needs a name) is hosted on a space colony orbiting Earth, which is a neutral haven.
@Sanojutsu:
Looking over your race's sheet, I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be friendly - got any particularly reasons why you think that they'd be buddies?
@Parable:
How about the Star League or the United Systems? I know those are incredibly low effort ideas, but hopefully it'll get ideas flowing!

Common grounds? mutual shame of a past conflict?

Oh, that's true! Though in the Sirians' case it's less shame over a past conflict (though there are definitely Sirians like that) than "We're not a bunch of thugs!"*. They have probably done a few things they're not proud of, though

Game
Okay, here is the Discussion thread, and the name for the galactic politics and adventure game! Hang out and discuss politics and adventures IN SPAAAAAAAAAAACE!
Okay, more seriously, before we begin the game it would be good for everyone to decide what their relationship is with the other player nations. Figure out among yourself what they are or what they might become during the course of the game.
The game, as mentioned before has two parts. The politics part and the adventuring part. What I'm thinking is that there is a neutral place in space that acts as a sort of United Nations, where everyone talks to each other publicly, while more important matters go one behind closed doors. While this ambassador person speaks for your nation you will control the rest of the nation itself in your interaction with others and the rest of the player characters.
As for the second part, my current plan is that you'll be part of a private merchant and shipping crew that go from planet to planet regardless of hospitality in order to sell, buy, and trade good. Yeah, you're Han Solo. The plot for this part will depend largely on whose nation were in and the internal political situation. Players are encouraged to be creative here.
Any ideas or questions please go ahead and fire away.
