I like the D&D wizard the best; best offensive-looking use of magic, best image quality.
I must be cruel, but to be kind That bad may begin, and worse be left behindMy mind goes straight to a fireball when I look at current, and I like the image. However, I do really like the other FF Black Mage image you proposed. Very stylish.

Yeah, my mind went fireball too, so I don't see a problem with the current. Not that a few of the other suggestions aren't good, like the other FF or the D&D ones.
Check out my fanfiction! This inspired me to make a topic for White Mage. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=1372814903075042400&page=1#1

I think that ones my favorite so far.
Bump...seeing a lot of votes for the current. Should we crowner this or get some more suggestions?
Current is fine. The only one I'd be willing to exchange it with is the Vivi one.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerIMO, I feel the current is more than adequate though my Vivi suggestion (11) would be a marginal improvement. But only just.
I think this thread and the White Mage thread should inform each other's decisions - it would be helpful if they matched.
The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableThe problem with the current one is it doesn't really look like a fireball to me; it looks like his hand is glowing, and that's just a kinda universal indicator of magic to me. The Vivi update shares the same problem; it's a more clear orange, but there's still no real flame and it looks like some sort of magic circle instead of an offensive attack.
I like the Black Waltz 3 with lightning picture◊ because lightning is an obvious example of an offensive element and it's easy to see the lightning.

I must be cruel, but to be kind That bad may begin, and worse be left behindOpen in new tab. I don't see how it illustrates.
Image Source. Please update whenever an image is changed.Tried that. Still not working.
The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableI did a drag-and-drop in FF and it worked...it's pretty but not all that clear. I had to lean toward the screen to make out his head.
It looks more like a dragon casting lightning magic than a person.
Clock is set.
The clock's up and the overall consensus is to stick with the current, so I've put most of the suggestions on an Image Links page. Locking up.
The trope is about a magic user who wields purely offensive magics (Fire, ice, lightning, explosions, etc.). The picture shows someone wielding magic, but there is no indication that said magic is offensive or destructive; it reminds me of the heal spell from The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim. A picture for this trope should show that aspect.
Suggestions are appreciated; I couldn't find anything really good.

White Mage has a similar problem, but this thread's just for Black Mage.
