Maybe you've simply been unlucky, and have been interacting with the more extreme members of said fandoms? Most fans of things aren't that horrible, being as they are normal folk.
"Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen."
Worse, my own brother caught me listening to Fun's Some Nights and proceeded to prepare to punch me in the balls so I couldn't reproduce and spread my "terrible taste in music" despite my only having heard that song once that exact moment, and he assured me that I was "wasting my precious lifetime" on "shit like this". Yeah... You can see why I come to these conclusions.
Hell Hasn't Earned My TearsYour brother sounds like a shithead, tbh.
I fully get the fandom/subculture thing. I used to track the Kataang tag on Tumblr, but the shit-flinging and inter-ship blaming and hate was absolutely repulsive. I've only returned for a look today.
Final Fantasy apparently has a big, bad fanbase - and I have seen some aspects of that, but it looks to me that they've chilled out a tiny bit recently in this interim between games.
Come sail your ships around me, and burn your bridges down.Your brother needs to be forever banned from procreating. Preferably a few minutes ago. And every fandom has it's assholes who should be forever banned from the internet and fandoms they're part of. Don't let them discourage you because they're bastards.

“I was thinking that work is like fertilizer in that I’m glad it exists; I just don’t ever want to get stuck in it."Maybe he was joking? Seems like one of my exaggerations, without the ball punching though. I always mess with my cousin devoted fanlove of One Direction. Normally I would not bat an eye, but said cousin is 20.
Then again, when I am joking I make sure everyone knows I am joking.

He did say he was joking but balled fists near my junk can't be called a laughing matter after the fact to save face. My gonads are Serious Business.
There was a time when I bought a One Direction CD and I got retweeted/replied to by Harry from 1D once, but those days are long over. Their new album just wasn't as good as the first.
What happened to boy bands, they're not as good as the ones we had as a kid. We had real manufactured pop music back then.
Hell Hasn't Earned My TearsStill like a bit of N Sync - Pop :3
"Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen."I like U2's Pop.

... real manufactured pop music? Dear god, I can't... my liver is gonna explode.
Yeah, never been a fan of pop. Specially not the kind that comes prepackaged.
@ Rosvo; BURN ME DOWN AND I WILL BECOME MORE POPPY THAN YOU CAN EVER IMAGINE
LIKE POPCORN
(I'm actually into post-hardcore and screamo nowadays, but damn if people like N Sync and Five didn't produce some catchy ass songs)
"Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen."I'm pretty sure the torch has been passed to South Korea for catchy-ass boyband music.
Depends on where you live. Most people I know wouldn't touch K-Pop with a ten-foot-pole. And curious, did your brother actually hit you?
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.Subcultures can be terrible... Nerds some of the worst among them. You would think that a bunch of social outcasts would, upon finding each other, form a group for the sake of companionship and decency and get along, but no, they just have different reasons for maligning one another, like one guy prefers Marvel to DC or the other way around.
You need an adult.Could it be a case of the outcasts reveling too much in their new-found importance in their respective fandoms, and therefore feel the need to keep themselves feeling superior by making others feel inferior?
"Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen."And so we discovered the secret behind the success of the internet.
We Are Our Avatars Forever (Now on Discord by invitation, PM)Despite the negative comments in the thread thus far, I'd still argue for the bringing together of fans that the internet has provided, being a great thing overall.
"Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen."The inernet is pretty cool guy.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.Aye, that he is.
Even with the bad he brings out in people, he still brings people together that like the same things for better or worse.
On the topic of your brother though, he sounds like kind of a jerk for doing that. Even if it was a joke, it went too far in my opinion with the almost-ball-punch.
The only reason why I like waking up is because I like falling asleep.I have nothing useful to contribute to this discussion and only wish to express that I managed to correctly guess the OP before clicking the thread.

A different shape every step I take A different mind every step of the lineAlso sorry about your balls.
Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.
What are you implying about me sir?
Even worse, my brother just offloaded his Chris Brown F.A.M.E album on me because he knows I like to get offloaded with his ironic handmedowns. Though I have to wonder why he had that CD in the first place.
Hell Hasn't Earned My TearsThat you seem to make long-winded threads about your problems.
byeI can't say I like Some Nights myself.
That said, giving anyone actual shit for their listening habits is pretty stupid.
Your brother has issues, NGP.

YUUGI WANTS YOU FOR DRINKING BUDDY
Because I was spat out by any real subculture worth its salt I'd want to be a member of, notably even nerds on forums spat me out after a while which is why I ended up here because I had nowhere else to go, and goths, well, I was shoved physically by a goth who was offended when I asked him whether he was enjoying the Fruits Basket manga he was reading. I've not had a very good run being included with large groups of supposedly like minded people, so my attitude towards subculture as a whole is very Fox and the Grapes. I keep hearing they offer something awesome but whenever I try to go near a subculture or even a fandom their behaviour towards me ends up ruining things like Game Of Thrones whose fans openly mocked me for not "getting" GOT at first and when my computer crashed and I was offline for a while, they laughed and decreed it the Punishment of the Old Gods or something. Yeah... I've been turned off GOT because I know how mean its fans can be. Considering the core themes of the series I shouldn't have been surprised.
Lately I've been looking up a lot of Insane Clown Posse videos on Youtube because I'm both fascinated and mystified how a singular hip hop group warranted a subculture unto itself, and why people devoted their lives to the philosophies and espousings of evil clown costumed men who wear hatchet pendants.
