I didn't watch Valvrave s1 because my time is limited and there were already three kickass shows to focus on. I heard it was much more along the lines of Code Geass R2 insane than Trigger insane. In other words, the bad kind of running on zero logic.

I'm only going by what my friends have told me, but yeah, it's enough to get me to actively avoid watching it. Like, ever.

It's a... biiit more complex than that. They're both vampires, he's got Horror Hunger, and it's a complicated pseudo-relationship they're both very uncomfortable with where, for instance, she reluctantly offers him sex so he won't go insane and rape someone else (he refuses, and feeds on his male military strategist instead when the guy offers as a way to atone for helping turn our protagonist into the monster he is now and using him as a weapon for his own grudge).

Long story short, neither the show nor the characters treat it as a positive thing either.

Part of me views Kill la Kill and Valvrave as complementary to each other. Valvrave is sort of solidly written with very interesting ideas but just massively fucks up over and over and over and over. Kill la Kill from an overarching standpoint is sort of fucked up from the get-go but continues having insane instances of awesomeness over and over and over. I rather like them both, but they do tend to be conflicting as hell, and they both tend to use that conflicting nature to their advantage to incite a reaction and get across a point.

And yeah, That Scene in Valvrave is a good example of it, when it occured I was all "OKAY I DON'T THINK I CAN WATCH THIS ANYMORE" but then they proceeded to handle it with surprising maturity - neither of them wanted it to happen, and Saki feels more sorry for him than anything, and Haruto is definitely ashamed of the whole thing. It's not becoming his submissive waifu, it's trying to help someone who clearly feels abysmal about a horrifying incident that he had no control over.

Consensual rape is either not rape or not consensual.

[up][up][up]'Consensual' is putting a rather rosy spin on it - she just gave up resisting halfway through, and had a Thousand-Yard Stare afterwards. It was a really dark scene.

... oh lawdy. Dis thread.

Alright, I suppose I should throw in my two cents. From the perspective of a prospective English major (and a sophomore taking a class on television analysis), I honestly have to back up the guys saying the show is a parody of Panty Fighters and that the show is calling out the people who only watch the show for the T&A. There's nothing in the cinematography that would suggest the show itself is obsessed with either Ryuuko's boobs or Satsuki's ass, the only fanservice being provided by the outfits in general as opposed to skeevy camera angles or the usual ecchi tropes. Furthermore, the men are almost always portrayed as shallow perverts, or just plain sexist, which isn't glorified by the narrative or the humor, but rather treated as being just sad.

Is it easy to mistake all this for just being good ol' fanservice on the surface? Yes it is. But when you consider the overall dark tone of this show's humor and the way it handles its own fanservice, the idea of it being purely dick-tickling cheesecake starts to fall apart. Granted, it still is dick-tickling cheesecake, but the show can't remind you that its eyes are up here if there's nothing drawing you away from its face to begin with.

I've got new mythological machinery, and very handsome supernatural scenery. Goodfae: a mafia web serial

This episode was awesome! This was a fight I didn't expect till the series finale... in the third episode.

Satsuki is such a glorious villain, no fucks given about opinions of common rabble. And Ryuuko really grew this episode.

I seriously can't help but laugh at people who are like "Oh noes, female body! I'm so offended!" What it this? Dark Ages?

PS: Valvrave has nothing of value once the novelty of it's idiocy wares off.

Personally, I'm loving that the show somehow managed to take gratuitious fanservice and flip it around into 'who the fuck cares if some lewd-ass pervert thinks dirty thoughts about you? Thats their issue, not something you should feel shame over"

Also, is it just me, or is mako showing more and more evidence that under all the crazy cuckoolander, she may possib;ly be the single most insightful ally Ryuko has.

TTGL as parody of mecha anime? I don't see how you can claim such a thing.
Not so much a parody so much as a tribute.

Consider this: Its early episodes are basically tributes to the original super robots: Getter Robo, Mazinger Z and the like. You have this giant robot that might have access to infinite energy and which is piloted by Hot-Blooded teens.

Then episode 8 comes and things go to hell. The story stops being about those old days of super robots and the like and very briefly resembles the period of time that the genre went through when Evangelion first came out. Shimon is basically Shinji for an episode and a half. This isn't a bad thing at all. It's just acknowledging the genre's past.

The series then goes past that uncertainty, the possibility that things might not be ok, and pushes forward into the future, in a way resembling other super robot shows that came after Eva (say, Gao Gai Gar).

There's a bit more to that but basically TTGL later becomes its own thing while going back to the roots of the genre: The reveal that Spiral energy might one day destroy the entire world if abused very much resembles how Getter energy in Getter Robo could be abused.

So yeah, not a parody, but more of a tribute.

Edit: Hell, just look at TTGL's Shout Out page.

This is how I see it, basically. Really, if you're introduced to a hard-edged ronin girl with a giant scissor sword and the determination to keep on standing up despite being pummeled into paste multiple times by fascist jocks and all you can look at is her breasts when she herself doesn't care... the problem's not with her.

It's been fun.

@KSPAM:

You should still consider that the extended transformation sequences aren't exactly being shy about focusing on the tits and ass when they put on the outfits. The camera isn't quite as wholesome or prudent as your interpretation would appear to suggest. It is definitely not an "obsession" of the production, that would be a misreading, but the exact opposite is also inaccurate.

@Crinias:

That's fine and all. I was merely objecting to the article's statement that Gurren Lagann was a parody.

@Kyle Jacobs:

Code Geass in general, even R2 (which I think is still enjoyable on various levels), is better than Valvrave.

If you didn't like that, you probably won't like something that's inferior to it.

@Red Savant:

Which just means that the show wants you to like its characters, despite the fact they're not being particularly deep or novel, because of their personalities or mindsets. And yes, I like Ryouko and Satsuki because they are pretty cool and badass.

But if you also happen to like fanservice in the process, not as an exclusive trait, the show's not telling you to feel ashamed of yourself either.

Man, Mako sure has a lot of guts to stand up to Satsuki like that. Then again, she is a Fearless Fool.tongue And that's a part of the reason why she's awesome. That, and her super love for Ryuko.wink

And now, random shouting.

"RYUHOOOOO""SATSUKIIIII!!!!"

"KAZUMAAAAA""RYUKOOOOO!!!!"

And then, galaxy explosions![awesome]cool

The camera during henshin is no more focused on the female anatomy than almost any other magical girl show with henshin ever made.
