Greetings Tropers,
TV Tropes has encountered a storage/memory issue and we need to start cutting some old threads in Yack Fest.
We anticipate cutting those threads in Yack Fest that have not had any activity since December 31, 2011.
If there is a thread in Yack Fest prior to that date that you would like to preserve please let us know via a post in this thread.
Please note that bumping a thread in Yack Fest to preserve it won't work and is irritating.
If you want to save something for yourself, archive it for yourself.
If you believe the thread is significant please let us know in this thread. Please understand that we can't save everything, so choose carefully.

These are important for wiki activity (as a historical record) and thus are probably on the lower end of the "what to purge" list.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWe would rather not purge the morgues because they contain information about the changes that have been made to the wiki and why. It actually serves a purpose that is relevant to the operation of the joint.

Alright. Another question to sate my curiosity: When will this happen?
To repeat what Maddy said on the previous page: We cannot give a deadline minute. If there is something that you want to save, don't shilly-shally.
Alright. Though there's nothing in Yack Fest for me to save.
What about getting rid of all inactive-since-2011 threads?
Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult. This is the idea lined out in the OP.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanMullon: If we have to take that extreme of a step, we will. We're trying to avoid a willy-nilly chainsawing, though. The TRS and IP morgues will be among the last that we'll purge. As blackcat and Septimus Heap both noted, they contain information of value to the wiki: when and why changes were made to wiki pages.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Okay, just thought of another question. Would there be chances of posts lost during this bug to be restored after the purge? Like, if one page just has two posts, will the twenty three other posts appear on the page after the purge?
Please pardon my lack of internet savvy, but does "archiving" a thread mean anything more sophisticated than going through and copy/pasting everything by hand?
"I'm not a nerd. I'm a specialist." ~Sousuke SagaraAnother option is to click through the thread whilst using the Wayback Machine on http://archive.org , making it take live captures of each page, and then in a couple months the pages will be permanently available though those archives.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.I'm honestly not tech-savvy enough to go into detail about how to archive a page yourself. I'm sure that there are people active in this thread who can explain how to do it.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Thanks kindly!
"I'm not a nerd. I'm a specialist." ~Sousuke SagaraYou can also save each page as an HTML file using File > Save on your browser of choice, though if it's a huge thread, that would be rather unwieldy.
Popular ones probably have addons to do so fast.
All the threads I wanted to save were deleted in earlier purges. My work is done.
Didn't know that one; thanks!
"I'm not a nerd. I'm a specialist." ~Sousuke SagaraI don't mind clearing some threads in Forum Games considering how many of them in the last few pages are locked.
It Just Awes Me and Old Folk's Home feel like they're part of Yack Fest, perhaps like subforums. So if Yack Fest has clearing, the same could apply for those.
I'm less enthusiastic on clearing OTC, since I know that there were many thoughtful (if sometimes ugly) posts and discussions in that forum.
We're starting with YF. When we've seen the results of that we'll see what else we'll want to be cleaning up.
As an OTC Mod I've got no complaints about the removal of old OTC threads. Most of them are dead threads about topics that relate to a piece of news that was thoroughly discussed before the thread was abandoned.
If we do a sweep of OTC presumably we'll give you guys time to find threads that you want exempt from the removal.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur. For the record, Old Folks Home has one page of threads. Four of those threads are locked. I'm sure the rest of the people who use that subforum won't mind, but it doesn't seem like it would make a big dent in solving the storage problem.
I'm just worried that people will use this as an excuse to try and cut the Just for Fun pages...
They are part of the wiki anyhow, and I am not seeing anyone proposing (or enacting) cuts to them.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWikipage summaries probably don't take anywhere near the size of full forum threads, so there's no reason to go for them.

There's also quite a lot of threads in IJAM that fit the category of being inactive since the threshold date, and there's more than 20 pages worth.

I now go by Graf von Tirol.
Out of curiosity, what about purging the morgues?
