One thing I've noticed is that for all how the page for They Might Be Giants claims them to be the unofficial official band of this wiki, there's relatively few people on this site who seem to ever reference them.

Wow I just realized I joined the site in 2009, though I don't think I started using the forums until 2010. It's been a while. Anyway, yeah, TVT forums seems like they used to be way more confrontational, people were always upset about every little change. I guess a lot of the more confrontational users either got banned or left the site, so maybe that helped.

[up][up]Well, most of the damage has already been done — the fate of Troper Tales, Example Sectionectomies, the two Google Disasters, all of that happened in the past even though we still see the big ugly scar tissue. There hasn't been that many changes to get upset over anymore.

We thought Compact Folders would cause a shitstorm, but they turned out to be completely optional (and, in my opinion, highly useful).

You cannot post a bad review of a series everybody likes without being called a troll.

I post a bad review of a certain Troper favorite cartoon. I explain my reasons why I hate it. I get called a troll in response.

Report that. Calling people trolls is pretty rude and unwarranted.

I'll see what I can do...

It really shows how some people are so full of blind worship for their fandom that they will take any words of dissent as trolling.

It's an unfortunate problem everywhere. A lot aren't open to criticism.

One thing I've observed is that there's a certain part of the userbase who are dedicated to those lesser known works (say ancient literature which we can describe and read freely) and will typically be quite thorough about those works - many will for example offer commonly known Alternate Character Interpretations as noted in scholarly articles, or even quote other authors over them.

Some will also go out of their way to do a Cultural Translation of say Chinese and Japanese works the meaning of which will be lost on any modern reader, but can be explained easily as such.

Wiki editors seem to find the combination of the word "interesting" and italics prefaced with an ellipsis rather... interesting.

A majority of tropers have Aspergers or other types of autism.

Also, a lot of female tropers wear glasses, or at least the ones who upload photos of themselves do.

Some folks on the Internet think they're a special GIFT to the world, and others aren't. In this perspective, they're kind of right.

Maybe not a majority (but, then, there aren't exactly official statistics on this so what do I know) but enough that it's probably very disproportionate to the population at large.

The YMMV pages are filled with examples for tropes that don't quite count. See critical research failure (people confuse that with regular research failure), broken base (seems to be "every tiny thing the internet argues about"), base breaker (I'm fairly sure I've seen examples that aren't about characters), stuff like that.

If the work has any sort of popularity then the page will be filled with natter to the point of being almost unreadable.

Yeah but if you clear examples from the YMMV page, they get added back on by someone else. Then there's arguments about what counts and what doesn't.

That's what Ask The Tropers is for, reporting those who edit war an example by adding it back in after you erase it. Always explain why you erased it as well.

[up][up][up][up]The worst part about Critical Research Failure is that it's supposed to be things which are immediately obvious to nearly everybody - I don't think many people would agree that France speaks Russian, or that Italy speaks Romanian. Getting the varying cultures of France wrong though would be different - not many are going to know about Occitan culture or what the Gascon language was like, so getting that wrong while still having them be recognisably French wouldn't qualify it for that.

Before editing out stuff on YMMV pages, remember that it collects opinions. Having a dissenting opinion doesn't make the opinion listed invalid (—> The Internet arguing about tiny things can be an example of Broken Base)

It's the section of the site dedicated to allowing people to ask one-off questions and to report violations of rules if there's no other place to do so, as well as a good place to gather people to help with some conflict resolution.

What's the difference between that and the trope repair shop of a work's discussion page?
