[up]They were on equal terms in taste. But now that I've read the chapters I understand what happened. Because all three dishes were equal on that front that decided to look at who's cooking was more "mature" and by their estimation that was Hayama. That's why I said saying he only did as good as them with his specialty as they did with general food is misleading. He never called it his specialty, the judges said it was fit to be a specialty because they could very clearly identify it as only something he could make; they couldn't say the same for the others. In other words, the dishes all tasted as delicious, but he had progressed (if only slightly) farther as a chef, so they gave him the win. It made perfect sense to me.

And it's comparable in that the judges were looking for something besides which tasted better when they came to the conclusion they couldn't make a decision based on that alone.

(Like previously, please bear with this post being anime-only.)

  • Being more-or-less in seinen for more than half a decade, I have started to forgot shonen protag archetypes. What Souma did this ep would immediate earn a No Social Skills or at least an Innocently Insensitive if he was in seinen, but in shonen like this he's merely boasting.note
  • It's somehow hard to think how the Tootsuki expellees can go, especially those expelled mid-trimester.
  • Honey. At least I have heard of using sugars to tenderize beef, although in my country's case it's cane sugar for a tougher cut—the brisket. I'm unsure about the protease talk, as it would most likely be inactivated in simmering temperature.
  • The first episode's foodgasm is immodest to me; the second's was immodest to my friend, and this ep's is just porn.
  • Does Souma really like octopi?

A note to translators: I saw a few sub groups translating Tootsuki's full legal name as "Educational Institution Tootsuki Teahouse Culinary Academy." This is neither literal or grammatical. 学校法人 (Gakkou-houjin) is a type of corporation that is created by law after WWII to separate non-profit private schools from its owners while allowing several schools to be ran by the same management. Hence it has no real equivalent in English. Back in our case, that means the "Education Institution" can be dropped, or used as a suffix ("Tootsuki Teahouse Culinary Academy Educational Foundation", etc.)

Ugh, Erina in first place.

It really shouldn't bother me, but it does.

[up][up]Either the protease did its job before Soma put it in the pot, or it's the type of protease that works optimally under higher temperatures.

I'm both surprised yet not surprised that Erina is the most popular. Surprised because I would never think of her first on a list of my favorite characters (though she'd be there) and then not surprised when I realized it's in Japan and they love her character type.

Which is funny, because in the past it was The West that liked Tsunderes, while The Japanese liked more demure types.

She's probably my favorite, or at least up there. Her pettiness is amusing and she plays well off of Souma since he always destroys her dignity. Plus, she actually does dislike him, so her attitude isn't just being a tsundere, though I've no doubt that she is one. I don't think I really dislike anyone in the main cast, though. Even Megumi is alright since her character actually develops from being some loser with no self esteem.

Episode. Good, they didn't waste a whole episode on getting into the Polar Star dorm. Guess not even this anime is that slow paced. Also, dunno what he's talking about, that place looks awesome.

I normally love tsundere archetypes, but I really dislike Erina because her pettiness actually inflicts harm upon others. The most notable example being when she failed Soma from the entrance exam.

Bitch, you basically would've ruined his career with that. Fuck you.

I don't mind much since she never actually succeeds. Plus, her pettiness never gets him into that kind of trouble again. The most she does is try to keep him out of the autumn election.

To me, it doesn't matter whether or not they succeed. It's their intention and her intention was, "Fuck you, I'm gonna screw you over because I'm self-absorbed."

I have to agree with No Limit that intent matters more than actual results with these sort of things. Although, seeing as Soma's whole deal is taking over the family restaurant (and I have no doubt even if he does end up world traveling he will ultimately do that) it would matter very little to him.

Arha Since: Jan, 2010
#814: Apr 24th 2015 at 5:27:17 PM

Oh, I'm not saying that makes it okay, it just doesn't bug me as much. I'm not so fond of her that your dislike matters that much to me.

And yeah, it wouldn't have actually ruined him or anything. He was already good enough to run a restaurant. Actually, that's one of the things that bugs me a little about this manga: He's going to end up way overqualified for the position he's aiming for.

NoLimit Since: Oct, 2009
#815: Apr 24th 2015 at 5:29:46 PM

I don't think it so much as his goal to run the family restaurant as him surpassing his dad. I see his dad being the Final Boss.

Arha Since: Jan, 2010
#816: Apr 24th 2015 at 5:36:02 PM

But he always says he wants to run Yukihira and has rejected scouting offers and such on that basis. Within the last few chapters he even said something about not being worthy to inherit Yukihira as he is now. Yukihira sucks, it's just a special of the day shop in a middle class part of town.

LSBK Since: Sep, 2014
#817: Apr 24th 2015 at 5:37:53 PM

He wants it for sentimental reasons and all that shit. which is fine but if we're being honest he was probably already good enough to run a place like that.

Edit: Plus additional reasoning might be "Dad started and ran this restaurant for years, if I'm not better than dad, there's no way I can/deserve to run it."

Eh... Not really. He already felt he could run it before. I mean, surpassing his dad is certainly a goal of his but it seems separate.

I didn't realize there was a Soma thread. After watching the latest episode I honestly can't blame them for letting Isshiki's bottom shake, since it seems like the natural thing to do. Didn't realize until someone else pointed it out to me that the ED scene with everyone at the table is the Last Supper.

Also I saw that poll before. I expect Shinomiya might end up in the Top Three in order to complete the Holy Trinity of Tsundere.

Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.

Anyway, I really hate that character archetype, so these results really piss me off.

Nice chapter, i´m really happy that there was a short time skip, i think after Shino everyone else would have been a dissappointment.

So Shokugekis aren´t just for settling dissputes but also just for having a match...somehow that takes a lot of tension from them. Not sure if i like that though... Or does every single one of the letters want to bet something against Soma? Or just a normal bet? "The loser has to attend his next four classes in a giant chicken costume!"^^

And why is Ibusaki so pissed? Did he fail or what happend?

Oh, already out? Translation looks rough, so presumably that's why. Bit of a spotlight for the third stringers in the cast, I suppose. Even the two Polar Star dorm losers.

Why do some translations insist on not utilizing any punctuation marks? Or proofreading? I'll wait this one out.

When Isshiki showed up fully clothed in the anime, I thought they were gonna bowdlerize his nudity schtick. I can't remember the last time that guy wore any pants in the manga.

[up] He wore a suit. It was glorious.

Ep 4: I couldn't stop grinning. The voices were perfect. When the blonde half of Those Two Guys ate the honeyed squid I thought they'd go for another tentacle grope scene but... oh well. At least we got Isshiki-senpai's ass.

One thing I noticed in the OP was the rotating dish thing. It was curry, right?
