Funny thing: I was actually excited when I heard that 5 Seconds of Summer was a pop punk band and getting popular. I was hoping that they would be the ones to bring about another pop punk wave.
When I actually listened to "She Looks So Perfect", my hopes for them were crushed. It's sugary teenybopper Power Pop.
And keep in mind, I do like some of 1D's songs.
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.Well, of course they won't release a pop punk song as a single in this day and age. Best to play it safe and keep the punk on the album.
(FYI: I have not listened to the album, so it could be all pop for all I know)
Pop music has never had that gritty punk mentality in any decade. Even in the decades where you'd think it would. '60s? Bubblegum pop was largely what was on the radio. '70s? Disco and more generic rock like Steve Miller and Fleetwood Mac. '80s? Hair metal, synthpop, and remnants from the disco era. '90s? House-pop, with maybe some alternative rock.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here."All About That Bass" is still #1, "Hot Boy makes the Top 10 and Jimmy Fallon's "EW!" enters at #26.
Peace is the only battle worth waging. The 90s would be the closest thing to that thanks to Nirvana and their followers.
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.Thing is, that music was still rare on pop radio. Alternative rock radio became a much bigger thing then, and that's where most of that music was relegated, no matter how big it was, and that's where most modern rock has stayed since.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.Taylor Swift's "Welcome to New York" has leaked, and I transcribed the lyrics for it.
I don't have a strong impression yet, but it's interesting how she went from a "haters gonna hate" anthem, to a Love Nostalgia Song, to a "I love the city" song.
The tracklist of Lorde's Hunger Games soundtrack has been revealed and it's an absolute doozy: listed features include Haim, Kanye West, CHVRCHES, Tove Lo, Miguel, Bat for Lashes, Charli XCX, The Chemical Brothers, Tinashé and Grace fuck-freaking Jones. And then there's that yet-to-be-detailed track 5 by "Various Artists".
Even though I feel too old to really get into The Hunger Games (and too discerning to get into Twilight), I do enjoy how these movie-series-based-on-popular-YA-books things can get some pretty amazing acts to write new material for their soundtracks.
Well, Lorde was the Lord of this soundtrack.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.Tove Lo? On a soundtrack? Count me in.
Peace is the only battle worth waging.Speaking of Lorde, I just heard "Cool Kids" by Echosmith on the radio and it sounds like a generic attempt to emulate Lorde's songwriting style set to the music of "Lights" by Ellie Goulding. So basically, it's pretty generic sounding.
Edit: Apparently the song was actually released last year before Lorde hit it big, so maybe they actually aren't imitating her.

Yeah, I thought that, too. I don't think either one attempted to imitate the other, but the similarities are striking, even if Lorde pulled it off better.
Honestly, to me it sounds like if someone rewrote the lyrics of MGMT's "Kids" and took the cool parts of the music out of it.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.@djbj: Lorde and Lana Del Rey (moreso the former) have started this trend of relatively stripped-down pop music, and similar artists (followers or not) have received popularity.
What do we call this music? Minipop (short for minimalist pop)? Maybe that wouldn't work...
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.Eh, the Lana songs I've heard don't seem stripped down to me. "Video Games" seems almost like chamber music.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here."All About That Bass" is still #1, "Don't" cracks the Top 10 and Taylor Swift's "Out Of The Woods" enters at #18.
Peace is the only battle worth waging.Constantly listening to that deplorable "All About That Bass" has made me lose faith in this throwback R&B/disco trend.
Oh well, I should have seen it coming. A good trend can't stay good forever.
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page. It's only one song, dude. The number one song, but still.
I'm tired of All Anout That Bass too. Then again, it's probably because my sister, a terrible singer, always belts it out.
I've never heard of All Anout That Bass. Is it a parody of "All About That Bass"?
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.Oops! Better proofread when typing on my ipad...
Eh, it's better than I originally gave it credit for, but I'd probably like it better if it wasn't #1 for seven straight weeks. Hopefully Tove Lo will be able to grab the #1 spot.
Peace is the only battle worth waging.Telling from the radio and sales performance of "Shake It Off", it's likely going to be #1 next week—and the week after since 1989 comes out this Tuesday.
Listen to Charli XCX's album when it comes out. I saw her in concert, and wow.
Of course, it's still poppy, but it still got some grittiness.
