Speaking of which, here it is:

Pan's got a new video on more Top 5 Best/Worst Modern Cartoons coming out next week too, so looks like he's getting back to business.

Late video because something about a license.

Top 5 BEST/WORST Modern Cartoons, Vol. 8 (in no particular order.)

  • 1. The Adventures of Kid Danger: Never saw Henry Danger, but thoughts of Dan Schneider aside (namely how the guy's a perverted asshat, though this is only implied in the video), Pan thinks it looks like it was animated with GoAnimate. Overall, it's a mess, but he still recommends it if only for the sake of Bile Fascination.
  • 2. Ballmastrz: 9009: Calls it OK K.O. with that show's anime influence cranked Up To Eleven. Recommends it.
  • 3. Aggretsuko: Expected it to be another cutesy show that's vulgar or random or super-creepy, but is glad it's none of those. Wants to see more cartoons like this (and Mission Hill, Undergrads, and Kitty Bobo). Thinks the storyline wraps up nicely by the end, but if there's more seasons, he wants to see more from the supporting cast. Minor nitpicks: because it's animated in Flash, he notices little off-center bits. Still, it's great.
  • 4. Final Space: Was super hyped knowing it was coming from a YouTuber that wasn't utter crud and Conan O'Brien, but saw the hype dwindle when the first episode premiered. That said, it's still a great show. Pan's qualms come from the main character Gary Goodspeed, who talks like the worst parts of Jack Black, The Nostalgia Critic, and some guy you always hear from Robot Chicken...but then starts feeling awkward when he finds out Gary was voiced by the creator of the show (Olan Rogers)...and feels even more awkward when Olan found his rant post on tumblr about the show. Overall: he sort of recommends it for liking everything but Gary.
  • 5. Last Man: The less you know about the plot, the better. Just know it's a great action cartoon that isn't from Japan about a boxer-in-training trying to protect a girl. Pan says it does a lot of things great where others would've screwed up. The episodes are 10 minutes long, but it's fast paced, but not in a way that feels rushed. There's interesting characters, but what you know about them from the show is plenty. There's blood and nudity, but it isn't forced. Animation is limited, but it's to save the budget for when it counts. Recommends it, saying Last Man is a true-ass man. (Also recommends the PS 4 game Last Fight.)

So what would you say the best RT vids to show someone who's never seen them before?

[up] Good question... I guess maybe the Captain Planet episode or the Jem and the Holograms video?

By the way, we've another Pizza Party Podcast episode:

Time stamps:

  • 11:00 ThunderCats Roar vs Calarts
  • 29:20 Black Panther and Ben The Looney
  • 40:16 What happened to eddie murphey
  • 44:50 6Teen reunion special revival
  • 48:30 Superman 64 Champ
  • 45:10 R Rated Muppets movie Happy Time Murders
  • 52:20 ??? Change the channel Awesome and Who to meet at Momocon
  • 56:10 ??? Favorite Sanrio Character
  • 56:50 ??? Ben the Looney and Nolan Friends
  • 59:10 ??? Christopher Robin and Lady tramp remake
  • 1:01:40 ??? Superheros who need more movies or cartoons

Also, who's seeing the crew at Momocon? I can't, because I haven't the money for it.

The Captain Planet episode has that one really violent scene (I think it's from the movie Wanted but don't quote me on that) of rats being gruesomely killed, so I can't stand to watch it. I know it's fake, but still.

As for a good first episode... maybe his Teen Titans review (it's peak Pan), or the one about The Rugrats Movie. Really, he's pretty consistent.

Also, fun fact: I used to know Ben the Looney before he got famous. He is/was a nice guy. Not really a fan of his videos, though.

So Pan's new video is gonna be delayed to the 31st because of Momocon stuff. Judging from comments he's made on his Tumblr, it's going to be one that criticizes the "CalArts Style" buzzword and analyzes current trends in animation and why modern cartoons look the way they do now and whatnot. On his Tumblr he even dug up old forum posts of people complaining about the art style of early 2000's cartoons, saying it's for research for the video.

Speaking of which, here's that video!

  • 1) CPC Force 5 Masters
  • 2) An English dub for one of the Cowboy Bebop video games. (Specifically one for the PS1 and another for the PS 2 in case there were more than 2)
  • 3) A pilot for Rocket Power with an honorable mention for a pilot of 100 Good Deeds of Eddie McDowd that featured Shia LaBeouf before he went on Even Stevens.
  • 4) The stuff you could get from Cartoon Network's Ultimate Holiday Wish List, specifically the $1 million dollar replica of the KND treehouse.

Ah, that video he's working on that I'd mentioned must be still in the works.

[up][up] It's a shame that the great animation of that CPC video was just an ad for a karate program (of course, if it was an actual series, no way would they get away with having a character named Tiger Mask).

[up][up] Yes, the one about Thin-Line Animation. I'm looking forward to it.

[up] Am I right to assume he's making that video because most everyone was going ballistic over Thundercats Roar?

Because if the video's purpose is to set the record straight about why it's unhealthy to have a meltdown over thin-line animation and why thin-line animation isn't necessarily a bad thing, then I'm all for it. grin

(It probably helps that I wasn't one of the many people decrying Thundercats Roar's existence.)

[up] Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.

BTW, is there a better name for this trope other than "Thin-Line Animation" or "Cal-Arts Style"?

Most definitely, going by Pan's Tumblr and comments he made on his last podcast. Him and Nolan spent part of it bashing the people harassing the creators.

[up]

Pan calls it "bean mouth" style.

Bean Mouth style kinda makes more sense, truth be told. It's not openly derogatory towards a college that's being routinely scapegoated by internet idiots. "Thin Outline" style sounds a bit more generic.

Bump but we have the PPP's 100th podcast at Momocon

And behold, we know what Pan looks like now. He uh...he looks like early 2000's Rivers Cuomo but slightly less pathetic.

I think you have that backwards; Rivers is by far the more put together looking one of the two.

Not to mention Pan can't sing, which makes him the less desirable one by default.

I mean, Pan can sing...just not well.

He's more pathetic than the lyrics on Pinkerton too.

Ring the bell and hide your Raven merchandise, because Pan's back with a review of the Netflix-exclusive movie, Next Gen!

Last I checked, he tweeted praise for the movie, saying it's like The Iron Giant for people with revenge fantasies.

Just going by the trailers, I thought it looked more like Big Hero 6 but EXTREME, or something like that.
