Within the community of global espionage is a myth many consider to be too ludicrous to be true. The legend of the Stand Alone Complex a sort of nirvana for all the world's spies who wish to finally get out of the game without needing to look over their shoulder all the time. Veteran spy Ryan Paulson grows weary of his duties and decides its time to retire, and intends on finding the Stand Alone Complex and build a new life for himself there. He just has to survive long enough to find it, if it even exists at all. It does, but it's a Lotus-Eater Machine, more of a prison than a haven for ex-spies. So Ryan destroys it and is forced to keep on running.
