I always found the Dualshock controllers just right for me. It's gotten to the point where I can hardly use some of the other ones out there. Xbox ones are particularly bad. It's probably just a muscle memory issue.

On the subject of the PS 2, I had many good times playing on it. I'm surprised it went on for as long it did though.

Byakuko, are you sure you haven't just been holding the controllers the wrong way? They aren't really designed to be gripped. They're supposed to sit in your hands, somewhat loosely even (The Dualshock was much better than the plain Sixaxis due to it's additional weight.)

Asking, because I just now tried to really clamp down on my Dualshock, and I could see why one might complain about the stick position when holding it that way. But again, that's not the right way to hold it.

Good riddance to the Dreamcast killer!

A shame it didn't die in 2000 from being too hard to program for,I mean seriously the same stupid controller? Two slots? Instead of four? Twenty-times more shovelware than the Wii or original?

The system was a disaster that just wouldn't die.

I suppose it could've been the Atari 7800 or one of those other Pre-Crash systems,...but it was always the weak link to Gen 6.

[up] wut

You do know there was a reason the PS 2 sold enough units to keep living this long, right? Namely that it was actually good?

Dreamcast killer? I think you spelled Bernie Stoller wrong, old chum.

As did I, 8-)

It should be Bernie Stolar.

The system was a disaster that just wouldn't die.

So if the PS 2's 150 million+ units sold is a disaster, what does that make the Dreamcast's 10.6 million units?

My previous post was inaccurate. Sega of America sacked the man who I referred to earlier after he skull humped the chances of the Saturn being popular. Pity it didn't stop the Dreamcast crashing and burning though.

i have an issue with my hands sweating when playing video games, if i tried holding it as you suggest, it'd shoot out of my grip like a watermelon seed (i'm surprised it took until the wii to have a wriststrap) and not gripping the control firmly means i have trouble pushing the joysticks

needless to say, all my life i had nintendo as a companion, so seeing playstation usurp so many nintendo game series (final fantasy VII-infinity, all other jrpgs) from n64 on, third parties snubbed nintendo.

what caused that? did nintendo execs offend them somehow? they all turned and never looked back. square, enix squareenix, namco bandai (most Tales Series games are on playstation consoles with only a couple on gamecube and wii, and most of those are No Export for You)

i mean, even when the wii had a giant lead initially, developers snubbed it while making games for the $599.99 ps3

and while the wiiu has strong developer support currently, when ps4 720 comes out, it'll be just as before.

although, i think consoles are reaching the point of diminishing returns on technology, with cartridges making a comeback and 3d ascending being the next big things. i kinda feel that hd wasn't really needed, i've played plenty of very fun low definition games including retro types like Bit Trip Void.

it'd be nice if square remade ff7 for a nintendo console (with better graphics ;) )

The jRPG developers jumping ship to Sony was mostly because most of them flat out wouldn't fit on an N64 cartridge.

Not Three Laws compliant.

[up] The main reason for FFVII going to PS 1 was the CD format. The game wouldn't fit on the cartridges N64 was using. That might also be why a lot of other games went to PS 1 instead of N64.

And I got ninja'd.

I will remind everyone that originally Sony and Nintendo were working together to make a disc-based system, but that fell apart. Thus the separate PS 1 and N64.

true, though n64 had Quest Sixty Four

and Ocarina Of Time (i still consider the zelda series to be rpg genre)

but even after nintendo switched to discs, jrpg companies snubbed them

if the Game Cube had stronger 3rd party support, it may have beaten ps2, it was a great console with multiple exclusive killer apps

and the wii crushed ps360 (even if ps3 later surpasses wii sales in units sold, the sheer losses sony took compared to nintendo's profits make it the 7th gen loser) yet still got jrpg snubbed.

i've heard ps2 succeeded due to it's dvd player, but never understood why people who bought it for that couldn't wait for dvds to drop in price

and the ps3 has it's bluray, but having dvds and games makes the console burn out faster.

Nah, Ocarina of Time barely has anything to do with rpg's. It does have Paper Mario and Ogre Battle 64, actual rpg's, though. Nintendo does not list is as an rpg for a reason.(it's an Action-Adventure game with rpg elements)

What the n64 had was fighting games(of which most of them are good). The PS 2(and PSX/One) had the rpg's.

N64 also had a great number of awesome platforms, which was a bit lesser for the Playstation stuff.(not a large degree of lesser, though) As for racing, both were equal.

Same reason people got the PS 3 because of the built-in Blu-ray player: People are impatient.

Am I just a good caretaker? I keep hearing stories about people having to replace consoles, but I've never had to replace a console of mine. I've still got my slim PS 2 from 2004/5 in working order, and my fat PS 3 from 07 never died (even after I took it apart one time because I was stupid), though I did sell it when I bought the slim PS 3 in 09, which I still use and kiss lovingly almost daily. Plus I've still got my Game Boy Advanced SP from a decade ago in perfect working order. Hell, I think my old PS 1 from 1990-something would still be working if I hadn't sold it off a few years back.

The only console I've ever had to replace was a Game Boy Pocket that I accidentally left in a diner when I was a kid. I left it on the bar, then when I realized I forgot it (and my Pokemon Blue catridge! :'[ ), I went back and saw it was gone. So I had to get a new one. Aside from that, all of my consoles are still in perfect working order/in my posession. Even my sister's old Game Boy: Brick Edition (the original one) still works, and that's after spilling a ton of vinegar on it like a decade ago!

Consoles lost?

I gotta replace my Game Cube as it's unusable now due to the lens being broken. N64 needs a replacement at the moment. Mine's worn out. I once crushed a Gameboy Color in my backpack due to books/etc.

That's kind of it.(well, consoles/handhelds, technically). Oh, and you know, NES's breaking all the time. tongue

Again, there's a perfectly serviceable and legal set of emulators for the gamecube. In fact, you need to have a gamecube in order to get them running properly.

The only problem is that you need a more than decent computer to get the thing working without lag and stuttering audio.

This post has been powered by avenging fury and a balanced diet.

I'd rather use my current Action Replay than to input it all in again.(very difficult on the Cube, ugh)

And I don't depend on Emulators, preferring the original copies and systems. In fact, other than currently playing Eletale Monsters(Quest 64 Japanese, but very different), I don't use them at all.

Honestly, yeah, why would you want to emulate a game if you have a perfectly good copy of the actual game and the console it's for? Aside from maybe as a programming experiment (assuming you're actually coding the emulator and dumping the ROM for the game yourself, but there's probably only like three people who do that and everyone else just relies on them).

[up] Good for testing codes, admittably. Or quickly going through different code parts.(as in, changing from 1 to 2 to 3, etc.) In general, the real system is better.

If not testing, real system. Like, if I want a certain monster to appear so I can battle/catch it/add to some type of dex/encyclopedia, real game. If I want to make sure it doesn't freeze the game, emulator.

Also, emulators can use codes that the real game cannot. This is their biggest weakness. Plus, some roms have the unfortunate side effect of freezing cause they're not real copies(or have something that prevents them from working correctly since they're not the real system, like bootleg stuff).

Anyway, this is getting kind off-topic, isn't it? The PS 2 will probably still have old game sales, so there's no worry. Plus, Gamestop is thinking of selling retro stuff again.(actually, this is pretty old news, so...)

My first PS 2 died in 2006 I think. I had a NES which stopped working, and I accidentally dropped my first GBA in the toilet when I was playing it.

I have a limited edition Pokemon GBC. It has rust in the battery compartment, one of the battery springs is bent (and has been for years) and there's a big scratch on the screen. Also, the A button barely responds when you hit it. But when you put in the batteries and whack in a game, it still works. The sound's gone though: my mother spilled fruit juice on it years ago.

Did I hear someone say they needed to replace a gamecube due to a dodgy laser?

Cheaper buying a new laser, the correct screwdrivers (one a standard small philips headed and a proprietary nintendo security headed one) to dismantle the gamecube and using a guide to find out how to fix it.

I did that when my PS 2 died on its backside.
