Well, that's annoying.
You can kill them, but it changes nothing. Lame.
I expected as much since that fight is scripted.
To the extent that one can "roleplay" in Golden Sun, I like to think of Isaac as an obstructive stick in the mud that hates fun. His worst nightmare was when the party came to Tolbi. Felix is a '90s Anti-Hero that gave a good one liner after every fight. After using Spire on a Goblin, "Fighting that Goblin rocked!". Finally, in my head, being the son of two major characters, Matthew is some kind of silly Author Avatar Munchkin with a little Medium Awareness. He was the one responsible for making the game have like three times the experience points of prior games, and he made damn sure he was the only one who could use the Sol Blade.
well, thats slightly easier to reconcile with his assholish behavior in DD, so i choose to make that my headcanon.
My Isaac is a jerk who likes to swear a lot. He constantly insults Garet, thinks Felis is a massive dickhead, and only really goes on the quest in the first place because he wants the brownie points so he can get with Jenna.
Oh yeah, he's also a bit of an obsessive perv when it comes to Jenna. So much that he refuses to allow Ivan to read any of his thoughts about her.
I plan to play Felix as an all around nice guy, just to further show off that Isaac is basically just a massive jerkass.
Shipping any two Golden Sun characters comes off as Strangled by the Red String since there's practically nothing to suggest it, ever. Seriously, when the game started suggesting that Isaac and Jenna were in love, I was all like "Where the fuck did this come from?" I still don't get it even now, and I must've played the series at least five times. Isaac/Feizhi made more sense for crying out loud.
The only role-playing I've ever done in these games is giving each party member a different weapon.
Isaac: Long swords
Garet: Axes
Ivan: Short swords
Mia: Staffs
and so on.
Finally done with Sol Sanctum. I was level grinding with Jenna dead to reach Level 6, then progressed to having Satunos, Menardi, and Alex stealing the Lighthouse stars.

In all fairness, it's probably due to the fact that:
- A) Isaac doesn't talk in the first game.
- B) They only time they're ever alone (well, bar Garet), she's either around 12-13, or exploring an ancient temple.
There's not much room to expand on it.
Giving characters weapons to use isn't really role-playing.

They only start suggesting it after you're done with Venus Lighthouse, making me think I missed something that happened there. If the writers were competent, they could have suggested all the way back at the beginning when Jenna was talking to Isaac on his roof, but I got nothing out of that at all.
You know what, I don't care.

I played that about two weeks ago. Jenna does seem to be a bit flirty with Isaac, but that seems like more of a general thing for her from what I've seen up to the Mercury Lighthouse. Which isn't much.
Alternatively, I only saw it because I was looking at it from the perspective of an Isaac who's obsessed with her.

I roleplayed Felix as a no-nonsense, protective tough guy who is somewhat pretentious, thinking of himself as a lion, Jenna and Sheba as lioness huntresses and Kraden as a scavenging brood parasite he must protect the pride from. After Felix meets Piers, particularly after he is shamed by his superior sailing knowledge, Felix become less pretentious but still dislikes Kraden.

Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackMet up with Ivan to help him find the bandits in the inn, then confronted the bandtis in an easy boss fight. I was going to give him the Bandit Sword but the Magic Rod turned out to be stronger and had a more useful unleash. After collection a Water of Life from he major and a Mint from the inn, the 3 of us traversed Goma Cave and found Forge the Mars Djinn.
I felt like sharing, but I think I was a little under leveled when I took on Dark Dawn's Star Magician. He took out five of members of my team and I leveled up twice after I beat him. I do not remember him being so tough (or rewarding) in the Lost Age.
I was for sure I would find one of those orbs after beating him, I really have no idea where to go.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackWell, I (more or less, got all the djinn and summons) 100% completed The Lost Age for the first time the other day. I'd done most of it in previous playthroughs, but this was the first time I fought Star Magician or went to Anemos Sanctum.
Star Magician was actually pretty tough, but, uh, I summon rushed Dullahan. Having a backup party that comes in when the first group is wiped out really does make summoning totally broken...although I guess it was also partially just luck that he never used Djinn Storm.
Welcome to th:|Favorite first game party member? Toss up between Isaac (for being the most useful all around) and Garret (for being a damage sponge in his default class). Felix is my favorite in The Lost Age because he can turn into sand and I gave him the sol blade. Dark Dawn...uh, I think Eoleo...really the inability to backtrack sticks out in my mind more than things I like. Sveta was a werewolf so I guess her if not the pirate.
My favorite lighthouse was Mercury, my favorite antagonist used to be Conservato but now it is Sludge. Catastrophe is the best summon.

I just want to gush about this for a bit, because I think Mind Read (or in general, the huge amount of NPC text) is one of the things that really sets this series apart as one of my favorites. There's so much little stuff that you can only discover by talking with and Mind Reading people. One memorable example is how Babi is appears from the story scenes to be a benevolent figure by the story scenes, but it's by talking to the various NPC's that you really learn about the hostile relations between Tolbi and Lalivero. And years ago playing The Lost Age, it was one of my more satisfying gaming moments when I personally pieced together Sheba's origins just from the comments made by the NPC's in Contigo.
Another thing about them that I feel few other RPG's attain is that the world actually feels like an entire world, with a lot of diverse and interesting cultures. And I also really like the way they tie in Psynergy to a number of them, like Kibombo and Garoh, with each culture understanding and using it in different ways. I don't know of any other RPG world that has so many towns that are each so distinctive and memorable.

Welcome to th:|I can agree. I've started playing the first game again, and I've just left Vale, and I'm really looking forward to getting Mind Read again.
Don't remember enough about summons or lighthouses to remark on my favorite, nor did I get far enough in Dark Dawn to have all the characters.
I normally stuck with normal element-aligned classes. Was kind of a purist like that, didn't like Djinn mixing unless I had to (like to get the Growth Psynergy for a puzzle).
In TLA, I pretty much never used Sheba after I got Ivan back, and Mia similarly would normally displace Piers. He was a cool guy and all, but she's the better medic and I already had Felix and/or Isaac for massive pwnage on enemies.
gs: isaac. tla: could be any one of them, really. probably either sheba or jenna? dd: sveta, karis, himi and eoleo. in that order. everyone else in dd can go die in a fire.
favourite villain was karst.
Favorite character from each game would be Ivan, Jenna, and Sveta respectively.

Ivan, Sheba, and Himi.
You know what would be awesome? If they remade the first two games for the NX. Fixing some dialogue, maybe adding dialogue trees for Issac and Felix, upgrading the graphics higher than Dark Dawn (though still in the same style), and maybe remaking Dark Dawn and delivering on that fourth game.

Reviving the thread to announce that I've found ROM patches for the first 2 Golden Sun games. These patches make the game harder in a number of ways. Rebalancing the cost of certain Psynergy like the Wish series, tougher enemies that use everything in their moveset, etc. The changes aren't many, but they look focused on providing a greater challenge than the regular games.
I plan to play these harder games as soon as I've finished installing the patches, and I will be live-blogging my experiences in this topic.
I'm role playing Matthew as a stubbornly cheerful idiot whose dumb luck makes him seem like a great leader. It helps me put up with Karis's/Kraden's railroading. I finally figured out what made everyone I talked to so angry, the points of no return! I am still enjoying the game, mind you but that last one made remember why I sometimes hate Gameplay and Story Integration. Narrative wise it made sense but gameplay is I should have got a warning, especially since I forgot what was where and went where I did not want to go anyway.
Favorite party members:Ivan-Jenna=Himi(so far)
Favorite antagonist: It actually was Chalis and Blados until I actually fought them, now its Agatio again.
Favorite Lighthouse: Mars
Favorite Summon: Dark Dawn Megaera (so far), Catastrophe previously.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture Rack
