The series stayed on the straight route, given the sequel. Although I'd love to see how they would reconcile the two views with the sequel in mind. That sort of thing can destroy families in real life.

The views expressed weren't bi. They were straight or gay. Yes, bi is an option, but if the people writing the damn show aren't even thinking that way, it's not actually an option in-show at all.

Authorial intent is what controls what's on the screen. Authorial intent has already said they're straight. Anything else is fan fiction.

And Death of the Author is only a critical theory, not the hand of God come to Earth.

Bumping this thread.

How are you all feeling about this show now that a few more episodes have been shown? I find it rather hit-and-miss, but I'm still sympathetic to the fact that the writers probably have to deal with an incredible amount of Disney Executive Meddling. "Girl Meets World: Of Terror" sticks out in particular because it is part of the requisite Halloween-themed episodes that must be shown around this time of month (at least on Family Channel).

Overall I think this show tries to capture the spirit of BMW but it's not quite as grounded and still has the symptomatic "cartooniness" of other Disney live action shows.

The thing that bothers me the most and breaks my suspension of disbelief is apparently the entire class revolves around Riley and Maya, who are free to talk as much as they want during lecture and then walk out of class whenever they feel like it. Cory does absolutely nothing to stop it and nobody in the class seems to acknowledge this phenomenon at all. Only a single comment was made on this by Farkle but it's not satisfying enough for me.

Aside from that I think this show still has potential, but I have yet to see a major continuous storyline, which I hope the writers will be able to explore in the future.

I concur on both the classroom point and the lack of an arc. It seems like the whole world kind of revolves around them. It feels far too contained for my liking, and I'm still getting comfortable with the lack of a third sibling. We see some interaction between Riley and Augie, but not a great deal. They're almost not siblings, just roommates who don't see a lot of each other.

In BMW we had a lot of fun scenes of Morgan and Eric hanging out and doing big brother/little sister things. We don't really ever see Augie and Riley doing anything together without their parents around.

[up][up] I really liked the two episodes with "Janitor Harley Keiner" so I've been seeing the show go for more in a positive direction.

As for Shawn/Corey being gay. Honestly, I think it could have worked, but at the same time too much of their Ho Yay was being played for comedy just like with JD and Turk in Scrubs.

I think there is just a fundamental problem with viewing people exclusively by their sexual orientation. You can't just have two close friends, you have to define them by whether or not they are physically attracted to each other. It seems to so many people emotional connection is less important when telling a story, when that should actually be the bedrock.

[up][up]Now that Girl Meets the Forgotten has premiered in Canada, I agree. It looks like the writers are finally starting to get a hang of what the show's tone is like, and I'm very glad to see it. Still rather cartoony and still not as down-to-earth as mid-late season Boy Meets World but my hopes have been restored a little.

I just saw the newest episode with Shawn's return and loved how well they handled it overall. Plus I felt it setup for an arc well, particularly with Maya's whole situation. Alright, no previous problems with her seeming too much like an expy are passing now due to how it's being addressed.

Really, this episode captured the Boy Meets World original series vibe well.

I take it last night's episode dived into the Shawn/Maya dynamic more? I don't have the channel anymore so I need to watch it online later today.

[up]Yep, went into deeper with her mother as well. Maya ends up making up with her because she learns that her father walked out on them and Katy's only way of supporting the two is working so many shifts at that dinner.

That and Maya pretty much implied that she really wants Shawn to become her new dad.

*sigh* I'm not exactly sure how to feel about this one...

When I was growing up during the time that Power Rangers were popular, people really got into a fuss over Tommy and Kimberly relationship ending (Mostly due to Amy Jo Johnson wanting to leave the show, and the actual breakup didn't occur until long after she left) to the point where Kat got a lot of hate mostly due to that (undeservedly, by the way) and still do to this day. Maybe it's because I didn't care about the "Super Couple" but honestly as much as I tried to sympathize with them, I really think that they were making a way big deal about it.

Now come "Girl Meets Master Plan." Admittedly I didn't really think much about Shawn and Angela's relationship for the most part of Boy Meets World. Of course I was happy when they got back together, felt bad when they broke up. And "Angela's Ashes" basically was a Tear Jerker in itself. But after watching this episode, I'm not saying that I'm affected by this as much as many Power Rangers fans were of the destruction of Tommy and Kimberly's relationship. But at least I understand how upset they were (I still think they're overreacting, especially with the hate towards poor Kat).

What I'm trying to say is this, after all the character development these two characters have gone through for the sake of their relationship, for their relationship all to just end off-screen without any resolution just for the sake of hooking up one with a character from the sequel series just so Maya can have a father really bugs me. Of course not to the point where I now hate Maya, that would be dumb. But I don't know... Maybe Trina McGee-Davis turned down an appearance or they didn't even bother to approach her. I'll just have to wait and see how they do this. Maybe it'll be great, maybe it'll suck. I don't know...

They ended on-screen in the first show. Angela left with her dad and that was that. There was NEVER any discussion of Shawn following them to Europe. It was simply him letting Angela go because she told him how much it meant to her.

I've seen this one now. It's good. This show's definitely more concentrated than the first one was. A lot of lessons get learned. I'm not too pleased about the family trip with Shawn being off-screen. I was looking forward to that being an actual episode. But at least we've got Shawn staying on as a recurring character. Even as adults he and Cory are fun together.

This latest episode was fun. It kind of leaves the show open for one of the girls to wind up with Farkle. Given that Riley has a thing for Lucas, I think they're opening the door for Maya/Farkle to be a pair at some point.

Season 2 just started a few weeks ago!

They're really addressing the criticisms that came around from the first season, but I felt a lot of their meta-humour could be toned down a bit. Better than a Bare Bulb is great and all, but if the writers don't try to fix the problems, it's all really for nothing.

"Girl Meets Gravity" is, however, really awkward. Probably the weakest one in the first five, though not necessarily because of the abundance of aforementioned meta-humour (that fourth wall was straining from the weight though). I'm more bothered by the fact that Riley's entire monologue of "the world doesn't revolve around me" ended up happening at a friggin' funeral. It's not about you! And you acknowledge that! And you still make it about you! Gah. Frustrating.

I enjoyed "Girl Meets the New World" a lot though. I'm glad they didn't go ahead and push the "THEY'RE A COUPLE NOW GUYS" thing that everybody else was pressuring them into. A rather unique message in a sea of relationship happy endings that Disney Channel is notorious for. I know there was quite a bit of criticism on the lack of chemistry between Riley and Lucas (especially compared to say, Maya and Lucas), so I'm glad the writers didn't force what would have been a rather artificial romance. Their last scene (leading up to and including Riley's closet Knicks rant) was rather well done, though, so I'm glad to see the actors are improving. Also I love Dewy Doy, and the fact that Topanga cannot let the pronunciation of his name go. I wonder if all of Auggie's friends will aggravate her in some unique way.

"Girl Meets the Secret of Life" added some really necessary backstory to Lucas. I'm not sure if it's a Retcon or not to his character, but I feel it adds a few new angles to past events, like how Cory reacted to him at the beginning and how Lucas handled all of Maya's mockery with a smile. It's definitely the episode that sticks with me the most because it also shows that Riley can be just as neurotic and controlling as her father can be. As a side note, Isaiah is a really obnoxious character, so I'm glad he's just a recurrer and not a main.

"Girl Meets Pluto" is awesome because of Feeny, of course, but also because the shovel joke between Cory, Topanga, and Shawn felt a lot like original flavour Boy Meets World. In general I think it was a decent quality episode.

"Girl Meets Mr. Squirrels" is hilarious only because of Eric. A shame that because of it, the main drama was overshadowed. The major conflict had potential to be a separate episode... as long as they found a less petty thing to fight about. But props to Will Friedle for being able to fight his social anxiety to do something like this. He didn't miss a beat.

What did you guys think?

I loved that we got a rash of five episodes to clear away that drought. Squirrels was probably my favorite because of Eric's return, but with so much other Eric stuff it kinda irks me that they chose THAT one to bring back. He could have just been a regular quirky brother but . . . instead they allowed him to keep the character changing meltdown he had after getting out of high school. It's like those SA Ts scarred him for life.

Well THAT Eric was the very last version of Eric that we saw in the original BMW series, so I suppose they kept that for continuity sake (maybe it really was a severe mental breakdown that nobody really acknowledged).

He had some moments in "Mr. Squirrels", though. It could be simply Obfuscating Stupidity and he's just gotten incredibly good at it over the past decade.

I've taken Eric as a Bunny-Ears Lawyer really. He's competent when he needs to be and just a silly person otherwise. I personally enjoy that mixture of Eric there more than I did early series Eric.
