Chapter 101, a.k.a The Proper Grim Reminder 2.0.

Warhammer Titan's design is seriously cool, though I doubt it's out of commission so soon, even with the liberal use of Thunder Spears. Welcome back, Survey Corps, you're looking fine. Gabi must be having the time of her life, and by that I mean she really is not. Well, at least Falco is probably fine in the rubble, if only because he's got Mr. Plot Armor with him.

There is something chilling in how Udo and the other girl went down. It just happened. No grand speech, no flair. The girl was just... there, crushed by the rubble. I didn't make a connection that this was one of the named characters until the freakout began. Then there's Udo, trampled to death by an escaping crowd.

So... it seems Eren is going solo. Either that, or Mikasa's plea for him to go home means he's been in Marley far too long. I hope we get answers on that soon, because if Paradis had other ideas about approaching the world, then Eren's interference threw things in for a loop.

So something interesting that a lot of people whom bought into the Marley Propaganda (the people whom are saying Eren is worst then the Warrior Trio which isn't really quite true considering the world was very much in favor of exterminating Paradis) seem to of missed.

Macgath himself says this when the Warhammer Titan starts fighting back against Eren, Everyone remember this: I'm the one whom dealt the first blow. Macgath very well knows why Eren is doing this as he was the one whom saw the Warrior trio plus Marcel off on their mission to Paradis. This also plays into Macgath saying that he and Willy are the devils in the previous chapter in response to their plan getting innocents killed.

People seem to forget that Marley set it up this way so Eren looks like the bad guy no matter what he does. If he didn't attack during the Festival Paradis was going to get invaded if not bombed by the rest of the world barring whomever those currently unknown Paradis allies are.

There is nothing more Eren could of done at this point. The only thing Marley didn't account for is the Survey Corps showing up and disabling if not annihilating Lady Tibur. This is war and the sad fact of war is innocents will die on either which side.

Yeah, this mess almost feels like a Gambit Pileup with so many players on the board, and we know basically jack and shit about the alliances and plans.

And yeah, it was incredibly chilling how those two kidlets died. I mean, it's kind of.....what to expect in that kind of situation, but it was still executed in such a horrifying fashion. Sofia is just....gone in an instant, when she'd been getting teased by Pieck not long before that. And then Udo freezes, and the crowd of Important People just knock him down and crush him.

Colt definitely proved himself this chapter, showing at least one reason he was selected as Zeke's successor. I mean, so much horror going on and all their superiors are missing and his friends are dying and his brother is god-knows-where, and he manages to keep things together.

I am willing to bet that Asian clan might be one the allies of Paradis. It's been implied very heavily at this point considering one of the guards was watching Willy and all of them left as soon as the festival was about to start.

My assumption is Mikasa likely has something to do with it.

Anyway, I love how the Hot-Blooded Idiot Hero has been turned into the closest thing to Emiya Kiritsugu I've seen, both in attitude and phylosophy. It really drives home how the problem is not the strength or the numbers of the enemy anymore, but the fact that Eldians' whole existence is a giant Morton's Fork.

Congratulations, Eren, you did Marleyan Goebbels' job for him - propaganda won't be hard to come by after this fiasco.

...it occurs to me how similar this is to the Reichstag Fire. Which means only bad things are coming.

And what would be the proper answer to the entire world declaring war?

No winning move whatsoever. At least this way Marley was pretty much decapitated.

I mean there was no part of this situation that could end with a good thing for Paradis except a situation where they at least try to take away the Warhammer, which seems to be their intent. Eren even waited until they finished to see how most of the world would react, and when they cheered for their slaughter only did he go for Violence is the Only Option.

The only other option which Im betting he's trying to hold off on was unleashing the Wall Titans.

Yeah, they really are facing an uphill battle in terms of....well...everything.

I don't really think Eren would try to release the wall titans. He wants there to an outside world for Paradis to live in, not a flatten wasteland.

In a way, publicly showing that the Eldians are determined and desperate enough that they would release the Wall Titans could be a way to avoid being pushed in a situation where they would actually have to do it.

If the Wall Titans can be controlled (in other words, if the Coordinate's owner can make them stop or attack freely), as I said before, they could be used as tools to give Paradis a political leverage against enemies without having to nuke everything. But this is not an option right now, due to the circumstances and the fact that probably not even Paradis knows if they can stop the Wall Titans should they wake up...

Eren's control over the Coordinate power is spotty at best (unless he's improved it during the timeskip, but we haven't seen anything to suggest that), so I doubt the Eldians are seriously considering using the Wall Titans. Uncontrolled, they're as big a danger to the Eldians as they are to anyone else, if not even greater.

He just needs contact with a Fritz to use it from what I heard.

It's either physical contact, or him eating one of them.

I mean, if he's willing to bear the wrath of Mikasa, Historia can just hold his hand while he calls out orders...or she can ride on Titan Eren's shoulder.

A side note:

There's an Ask the Tropers post describing a largely spoiler tagged, wall of text entry for AOT on AntiVillain.Anime And Manga.

The AAT poster wanted some help as they don't know the series and thought I'd bring it up here. I can't go over it in detail myself right now. The information seems factual enough at first glance, but there's definitely room for trimming.

Edit: Nevermind, I was able to get it. Though a second set of eyes giving the new version a one over would be appreciated.

[up][up]It's contact. Dina/The Smiling Titan was a Fritz and Historia is a Fritz. Eren would probably just need to hold her hand to control any of the Titans.

Although Eren suspect it would only work if Historia became a titan as he has never been able to fully tapped into the founding titan except by contacting a titan that had royal blood.

In a way, yes. Whatever conclusion Eren reached didn't seem to be good. I mean, simply touching Historia as she is wouldn't compromise her too much, would it? That's why that initial translation ("I have to eat her or vice-versa in order to fully activate the Coordinate") made sense at first.

Well, in any case, we still got Zeke around and his life expectancy is already pretty low right now, so...

I am pretty sure Zeke is already thinking about turning against Marley and the rest of the world anyway as they likely are going to find some reason to kill the Eldians in the future.

Thinking back, Zeke was the one that basically set things in motion, wasn't he?

Resuming the Paradis Operation was his suggestion, when his superiors were ready to simply abandon Titans. He insisted they would need the Founder and the resources of Paradis to begin modernizing their military.

And he was the one that insisted on working with the Tyburs, and getting the War Hammer to join them. He was the one that got the War Hammer to come out of hiding after a century.

He was also the one that insisted they needed a "narrative" to illicit sympathy for Marley and their Eldian citizens.

He was also the one that insisted that Reiner go with Falco, without asking the reason.

Plus his "unfinished business" that he needs to deal with before he dies.

His absence this chapter has been really distinct, so I'm wondering how soon before we get a glimpse of Zeke's gameplan.
