Exactly What It Says on the Tin.

We've talked amongst the other threads about making fighting games, most recently an Avatar fighter. So I decided it'd be cool to make a thread dedicated to it. Now, we don't have to start with the Avatar fighter in this thread, so who do you guys wanna start with? Some universe? Something from scratch?

Eh, I think that it would be best to take a couple of characters from each period in the Avatar timeline and shove them into a new universe for... a fighting tournament? I dunno.

As for play mechanics, coming over from the UMvC3 thread, maybe it would be best to swipe some gameplay ideas from the King Of Fighters Maximum Impact subseries and improve upon them.

I remember someone mention that SF may be too slow for Avatar, but Mv C too hectic.

With the progression of "slower/less flashy -> faster/flashier" as something probably like this:

VF? > Tekken? > SF > Do A? > KOF > Skullgirls? > GG/Blazblue > Mv C

Maybe the Avatar-verse is best somewhere between KOF and GG.

I see. How many players per player? 1? 2? 3? Take your pick? Do we have assists? DH Cs? TH Cs? TA Cs? Tag combos?

I feel like an Avatar fighter would naturally be a 1 vs 1 fighter, maybe with a tag team mode as a bonus.

It seems kinda wierd to have a thread just for any fighter idea in general, because others ideas may be overshadowed or lost in the posts as time goes on.

Or maybe that's just me.

[up][up]Well, it could be 3v3 taking Professional Bending into consideration. I think it should just be a bonus mode, though, and more like a KOF type of team setup rather than Marvel or Skullgirls with their assist attacks.

Anyway, yeah, I think something around the level of Skullgirls would be good in terms of pacing. Fast, but not so fast that you can't understand what the heck is going on. Although they should do away with air dashing for most characters since not many of the Avatar cast can do that. Exceptions being the airbenders and more powerful firebenders like Azula or Ozai.

[up][up]Well, hopefully we'll focus on one fighter at a time.

I think an important question is: do we have OT Gs? Are they prominent, and most, if not all, of the cast has one, or just restricted to a few? What about wallbounces and ground bounces? Basically, the more combo extension we have, the more likely the scale of combos will go up. For example, the average good SF combo is about 10 hits. An average Marvel combo is about 80-100 hits.

Well since I don't care about the technical stuff, I'll just suggest a roster:

Avatar The Last Airbender series:

  • Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Zuko, Combustion Man, Mai, Ty Lee, Azula, Ozai

The Legend Of Korra series:

  • Korra, Bolin, Mako, Tenzin

Please forgive me for I haven't seen that many episodes of the original series, and haven't seen The Legend of Korra at all, so feel free to add some characters.

Seems like a good start for a roster.

Who's "Combustion Man"?

Also, would you buy a Steam-based Mascot fighter?

A good writer puts in a lot of details in there story. But a great one gets a story from a single detail.

[up] Third season character. An assassin who shoots fire from his mind.

And might I suggest a few more characters?

Original Series: Suki, Iroh, Jet

Korra: Asami, Lin, Amon, Tarrlok

I think that's it as far as main characters go, plus a few extras. I'll come up with some movesets later.

[up]Well, you just know the game would have a Shotoclone somewhere. It's kind of inevitable.

But I'm pretty sure even Nickelodeon would back down if Avatar got its own Fighting Game. Spongebob wouldn't fit at all, and they know that. They save him for crossover games.

Anyway, I think the next step would be to think of the button layout for this game. Considering the target audience, I think the layout should be four buttons or something like that, similar to Persona 4 Arena—2 physical attacks (Weak, Strong) and 2 bending attacks (Weak, Strong). Then moves get only as as a double quarter-circle for a super so as to not alienate the more casual group of players. (Which, face it, is what the majority of the Avatar fanbase is) Now a sample moveset:

Aang

  • Buttons are referred to as Weak and Strong Physical (WP and SP) and Weak and Strong Bending. (WB and SB)
  • QCF+WP or SP: Staff ram (Direct overhead attack)
  • QCB+WP or SP: Quick dodge (Invincible rolling move)
  • QCF+WB or SB: Airbending Slice (Projectile)
  • QCB+WB or SB: Airball (Flight move)
  • QCF+WP+SP: Glider Ram (Invincible Super)
  • QCF+WB+SB: Cyclone (High damaging combo-ending super)
  • QCB+WB+SB: Elemental Barrage (Level 3 Super, or whatever numerical value we're going for.)

...I kind of only went for aibending rather than the other elements because he's the only airbender in his story. Might make a few adjustments later on.

Marvel's a four attack button layout. Then again, is this a team game or not?

I'm thinking no teams. And I'm only thinking of P 4 A because everyone seems to agree it's one of the most accessible. Not counting D Ps and all-out attacks and things like that, obviously.

LMHS isn't exactly difficult either. And is DP really that hard? H Cs, maybe. SP Ds are out of the question, but I don't think that D Ps are that hard.

I can do 360s. I can do back half-circles to forward. I can't, for the life of me, pull off D Ps with any sort of reliability.

Are you sure? Nick seem to meddle with everything. They'll probably insist on making it G-rated and aimed at school kids because the execs seem to firmly believe in the Animation Age Ghetto.

[up]If that were the case, then Spongebob would be shoehorned into every liscenced game Nickelodeon ever made. Sure, he's on the covers of crossover games a lot, but if a game is about a specific series, they'll leave it alone.

And I wasn't referring to D Ps as in the "dragon-punch" motion. I meant the attack in P 4 A. Maybe I should have clarified more: "attacks that require memorizing what simultaneous button combination is which". Throws, all-out attacks, D Ps, dodges, and everything require memorizing what combination of buttons is which.

Is forward + heavy for throw, two attacks for dash, and motion + two attacks for super that difficult?

No, but the special button can be a bit confusing for people. A lot of my friends ended up button mashing when I played against the, in Mv C 3 because trying to explain the mechanics to them was even harder than most fighting games. Ironically, LP MP HP LK MK HK is easier for beginners to understand than LMHS for that reason.
