Our Next Feature Presentation: The Stuff (10/12)

Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

Found some episodes of some series called Spy Game from the channel that brings us all those different Action Man cartoons. I'm putting the first episode in tonight's pre-show. I don't know exactly what that might entail, but I figure from the title, it's fairly appropriate considering tonight's feature.

Speaking of which, at the top of the coming hour, we'll have one Michael Caine playing the role of a double agent in a Cold War British espionage story—The Jigsaw Man.

Got some futuristic, cyberpunk Japanese animation on show for tonight.

From what I gather, this is from the same person and/or studio responsible for that CGI adaptation of Appleseed that we've watched a long time ago.

This one takes place in the later half of the 21st century where, after decades of evolving robotic and cybernetic technologies, the UN declares a ban on further research and development in the field out of fear that this field could pose a potential threat to humankind. However, Japan, the leading nation in this fields opts to take a "Donald Trump" approach and leave the international community and go it alone in order to pursue more technological advancement. Now in the year 2077, a superagent is dispatched to Tokyo to investigate the country's activities.

This is Vexille (or, to give the full translation of the original Japanese title, Vexille 2077: Japanese Isolation).

We'll be watching an English-dubbed release, complete with a Paul Oakenfold soundtrack.

Okay, setting us up with (Rip Torn's) Ghost Stories and CGI Action Man to fire everybody up.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, it's Japanese computer-animated action/sci-fi spectacle in the form of something called Vexille.

More spoopy Ghost Stories, and more CGI Action Man. That show was somehow less stupid with a live stuntma- I mean, actor, in it.

And then some anime action in Vexille!

Having now binge-watched Atypical, I got up a review of it: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/reviews.php?target_group=Series&target_title=Atypical

Damn TVT's 5000 character limit! I tried to go over enough important stuff to make the review a good one.

I noticed the message you sent me was red. Why was that?

So this week is just one horrendously awful movie after another.

If you happen to know absolutely nothing at all about this movie, let me tell you, this is just about as low as it gets.

Intended as a way of "promoting" World Championship Wrestling at around the height of the late-90's "wrestling boom," sadly, at the time this film would see a wide-release, WCW was already in a steep (if inescapable) decline. It's a long story, but let's just say the company's overall quality took a nosedive over the year prior to this movie's release, could no longer credibly compete against The Rock, "Stone Cold", and the rest of the Vince McMahon empire, and would be dead and liquidated just another year later.

And, in essence, that makes this very plainly a shit movie intended to promote other shit. I can't even be sure which product considerably worse between this movie and the wrestling promotion, especially when WCW's own way to "promoting" this movie involved making the film's star, David Arquette, their Heavyweight Champion of the World.

My head spins.

Anyway, the movie premise is focused on two dimwits who, honestly, for a movie primarily intended to appeal to mature wrestling fans, are rather insulting to their target audience's basic intelligence (12-year-olds have more sense of what's "real" and "fake" about pro-wrestling than these two total marks) who seek out their hero (a fictitious wrestler played by Oliver Platt) to help him "avenge" an unfair "match loss" and his firing from the company.

Also appearing are Rose McGowan, Joe Pantoliano, Martin Landau, Caroline, Rhea, and a host of WCW talent and personality from the company's final year.

The director of this pizza shit (who previously made the dyed-in-the-wool stone cold classic movie Good Burger) would later go on to make quality work like The Shaggy Dog, Norbit, and Meet Dave

So let's get Ready to Rumble...

Need to climb out of the awful, awful shit we've been enduring all week, and I got just the cure.

Tonight, revisit the cult favorite film of 1985 with every bit as much heart and soul as Back to the FutureThe Heavenly Kid.

Starring Lewis Smith as the ghostly spirit of 50's greaser who returns in the 1980's with the purpose of earning his angel wings, also appearing with Mark "Neidermeyer" Metcalf, Jane "Mom from Malcolm in the Middle" Kaczmerek, Richard "Richard Mulligan" Mulligan... and Beau "I GOT THE POISON IN MY BLUUUD" Dremann...

Starting up a lot earlier just to make room for "Theevan" in pre-show.

At the top of the coming hour, though, rest assured that this movie is a must-see high point above the rest of the muck and mire we've been wallowing in the rest of this week.

It's got humor, it's got heart, and I'd dare call it a greater 1985 feel-good movie than Back to the Future. Lewis Smith is The Heavenly Kid...

I started watching one this on my own. Oh man, are you in for it.

Imagine, if you can, an Alin Bijan Christian movie with Birdemic audio, Derek Savage scripted dialogue, Gloria Tesch family green screen and special effects, and a Neil Breen Las Vegas setting. The only element I can't place is the over-the-top, distracting stock muzak soundtrack.

Less than three minutes in, and I've already experienced a total assault to all senses (EDIT: a fourth minute in and it feels even worse) (EDIT 2: omigod, I can keep making additional edits here for every single fucking minute). My friends, do you have what it takes to withstand the shocking cinematic atrocities of Miracle Man?

[up]This is easily the worst Christian movie we'll have shown since The Bells of Innocence... which would make it the worst Christian movie we'll have ever shown.

In slightly more "exciting" news, Derek Savage has a "new" Cool Cat trailer out.

Just as I had already assumed, this is basically just a rerelease of the same Cool Cat movie we've watched before, and even this trailer features minimal new content that we haven't seen already. But the material we haven't seen... Oh man!

Just skip to 1:42 below and get a load of Derek Savage RAPPING in the new song "Cool Cat Rap Master"

And then our main attraction is Miracle Man! Where a man with the coincidental initials of "JC" fights the forces of evil with the power of greenscreen! And other stuff happens too.

How many actual sets did they have?? So many backgrounds and locations were obvious photos grabbed off the internet.

Ultimately, a pretty split ★★. We got the 1s, we got the 3s. Yuuup. One of those movies, where people couldn't make up their mind if it was incredibad or just bad bad.

Also, the credits list "Satan" and "Satan 2" as characters.

[up]Is that including my absentee vote?

Anyway, Oh, Ho-Oh-HOOOOOoooooooooooo...

Kung Fu Friday is upon us, and for this week's showcase, we got a real nitty gritty grindhouse flick featuring a female martial arts expert goes up against "the mafia" and teaches them a hard lesson.

Fine by me. Here's Firecracker.

Yeah, that includes your absentee vote from having watched the movie prior. There were enough 3s to pull the score up to a 2 overall.

Since tonight's movie is a bit shorter than the norm, I'm having a bit larger-than-usual pre-show. (Also, I have a late dinner that got here just now, so I have to either start the thing early or late, so I'm going with slightly early.)

The pre-show's all about GODfrey Ho.

And the movie? A Filipino-American joint production named Firecraker. It looked like good trashy fun, and we'll check it out!

After seeing that ridiculous Garfield phone, I just had to look up more stuff about Godfrey Ho. And I found a fun little article on him.

The demand for new ninja films got so high that Ho stopped even hiring actors. He would send a runner to the Chungking Mansions (home to many cheap, student-friendly guesthouses) and put up a sign saying he needed Caucasian faces for ninja movies - no experience required. The stunts would all be done by Asian stuntmen (the ninja suits providing an excellent means for hiding faces) and the dialogue would all be dubbed so all the 'cast' really had to do was stand there and make faces.

When asked (again by narnarland.com) what Godfrey Ho's directorial style was like, mainstay ninja Stuart Smith replied that his clearest memory was being told, no matter how much he shouted and bugged his eyes, "I can't see you acting - more acting!" The uniquely manic style of the bizarro non-actors is a big part of the films' delirious appeal. Everyone amped themselves up to eleven so that Ho could "see them acting".
