For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

Last night, when I was done babysitting my niece and nephew, I had a chat with my older brother (I'll call him ♣) before I left. Eventually, the chat turned to my younger brother (I'll call him ♦) and cousin (I'll call him ♠).

♣ said that he and ♦ sat in a car ride going to a hockey game and didn't say anything at all the whole trip. He said it was horrible, the silence of that long trip. At the game, it took until the third period for ♦ to bring up politics. "Did you read that article I sent you?" "No, but I will. Could you send it again?" The article was something about how health care being run by the government raises the prices or something like that.

♣ said that he argues healthcare should be free for moral reasons, not economic. So ♦ sent an article from a shoddily designed website that argued for economic reasons that it would be expensive. ♣ said, "If I were to try to change someone's mind, I wouldn't show them a website like what ♦ sent me. I could have designed that website!"

♣ also said that ♦ is like our dad, in that he has excuses for everything. (In our dad's case, the excuses are for not taking care of his health) ♦ doesn't want to admit that maybe the reason people don't want to hire him is not some kind of prejudice against a muscular white man or whatever, but because he comes off as a jerk. Which he does. He is very offputting.

♣ said that ♠, meanwhile, has more of a charm - he manages to charm "the elders" into listening to him. But at the same time, ♠ is the least successful of our extended family members. I told ♣ "people who are at the bottom of the ladder tend to see the ladder as inverted", and he said that's a smart saying, and he loves it.

I also told him that ♦ is becoming alt-right, and he said, "I'm not surprised." Remember, this is the guy who joined the manosphere, and if you look at the manosphere and alt-right, there's a lot of crossover between the two. One philosophy naturally slides into the other. Blah.

For a second, I mistook tonight's film for The Pagemaster. Have we seen that in here yet, by the way?

Heh, I remember tonight's movie from when I was a kid. Probably won't make it tonight, though, since The Flash 2014 comes back from hiatus tonight if I'm not mistaken, and that airs around the same time as the coven's usual meeting time.

And that's assuming I'm home when it airs, since I'm attending a group interview a local retirement home is holding for people who have applied to work there (myself included), and don't know for sure I long it will last and when I can get home, so even if I miss both, I might possibly be called for a formal job interview if all goes well! smile

We watched the infamous, but now cult classic, Super Mario Bros. movie in here before, and after watching this video of the history of the making of that movie, I thought you guys might like it.

Interestingly, Dustin Hoffman wanted to be Mario, but was turned down, and Danny DeVito was tapped at one point, and he turned it down after not being allowed to see the script first.

Difficult for most people to get past the simple fact that tonight's film is a sci-fi, post-apocalyptic remake of Casablanca starring Pamela Anderson playing Humphrey Bogart's role (Udo Kier in the Peter Lorre role, though, is perfectly sensible casting for a B-movie, though).

But since late last year, I just can't get over that this is supposed to take place during a "Second American Civil War" in the year... 2017. With a batshit lunatic like Donald Trump having an influence in all our lives, perhaps this batshit vision of the future is closer to us than we ever thought possible.

Time to revisit Barb Wire.

First up, we're going to "A Dark Place" in another one of Retsuparae's playthroughs of bad games. Then Gamesmaster hopefully shows us better ones!

After that, we're revisiting Barb Wire. How does it hold up, considering we're living in the distant future year it allegedly takes place? Let's find out!

Gonna be a busy time for me tonight thru to Saturday. In case Bonsai isn't free on Saturday, we need to ask somebody to be ready to kick off the playlist, in case I'm not back from Connecticut in time to start it myself (I should have just enough time to make it back by 7:00, but I'd like to have all bases covered just in case).

Anyway, tonight, I leave you with the 1996 sci-fi horror flick Lifeform (aka Invader)—the only movie directed by Mark H. Baker, whose only other movie credit is the "story" writer behind Flight of the Navigator (10 years prior). This story has the more "fun" and "interesting" premise, though, per IMDb:

When the Viking space capsule suddenly returns to Earth from its long ago trip to Mars, it brings with it an intelligent visitor that is part "Alien" and part "ET". Encased in armor, it extends a humanlike form from its shell to examine its surroundings and shows an interest in humans including a soft caress of a female scientist prior to the Army killing it. This only enrages its sibling.

Tonight, it's Lifeform. Or should I call it Invader? Movies with more than one title, I tells ya...

Before that, we got an interesting pre-show. The history of LJN from the Gaming Historian, some more 90s action cheese with Johnny Quest, and some random weirdness.

Alien, Except Worse

I hate it when a movie is basically another movie, except inferior, and doesn't bring enough new or interesting to the table to at least take it in a fun new direction.

Okay, they managed to autopsy the alien and cut it open. That was unexpected.

And it did manage to give us this awesome GIF I just had to make.

Still, it got ★★. One Troper said they voted 2 "just for the WTF ending".

Oh, Ho-Oh-HOOOOOOoooooooooo...

Leaving behind a real treat for all of you this Kung Fu Friday. Here we have The Man with the Iron Fists, written (with a little help from Eli Roth), directed, and starring RZA of the Wu Tang Clan (who also provided much of the film's muzak), also featuring Russel Crowe, Lucy Liu, and WWE's Dave Bautista, and "presented" by Quentin Tarantino.

Enjoy, have a ball, and I look forward to being back with you all tomorrow night.

Lemme add real quick that pre-show should be expedited tonight. If you don't want to miss any of this movie (and you shouldn't), make sure to join out chat ~10-15 minutes before 8:00 PM (EDT).

I kinda-sorta like this film. It feels almost like another Mortal Kombat movie at times. It's only, sadly, got stretches that are too boring to be more than a watch while doing something else besides.

For Kung Fu Friday, it's The Man with the Iron Fists.

And a shortened version of an MXC pre-show. Because you see, we start our movie early tonight, at 7:45 PM US Eastern. It's a little longer than usual, and starts a little earlier than usual.

Come on in and watch the action! https://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

I was very surprised to see the name of Howard Drossin, former Sega musician (Sonic and Knuckles) in the opening credits for the movie's music!

The movie was being compared in the chat to a video game, or "an Assassin's Creed movie that doesn't suck", or even God of War.

Certain elements of the movie made it feel like it was basically a porno (first half in particular) crossed over with a kung fu movie. Pants added that it's those things also crossed over with a rap music video and a videogame.

With all its stylization, it got ★★★. Bread-Badger called it "More 'good' than 'so bad it's good'."

Sadly, there isn't a better quality trailer (nor one in English) that can be found for this title, but the premise seemed a bit intriguing, if peculiar, tribute to horror movie culture (I'm not aware of any horror movies that were hyped with "vomit bags" distributed at theaters after the late 60s, early 70s, but apparently they're made an important part about a "movie within a movie" central to tonight's story premise; as an aside, let me also point out that I'm fairly uncomfortable with the quantity of such vomit bag memorabilia up for sale online while listed as in USED condition)

Plot synopsis, per YouTube video description:

Mary's an attractive high school senior who is obsessed with horror flicks. After she sees the latest horror hit "The Wisher," deadly consequences begin to unfold. Someone or something is granting Mary's wishes in the most violent and perverted ways. High school just became a living hell

Of semi-note, we have the late Ron Silver (from Timecop and TV's The West Wing; also a part of a handful of past coven features, including Eat & Run, Deadly Outbreak, and George A. Romero's Bruiser) filling out a cast of relative unknowns.
