Our Next Feature Presentation: The Stuff (10/12)

Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

I'll take it we'll watch two episodes of the original game show (even though there's nothing to connect them except for visuals and some mythology gags?) as preshow material?

[up]Nah, don't wanna overdo it.

There will be an other trek through The Crystal Maze, which seems thematically appropriate enough, though.

Then, yeah, at the top of the coming hour comes Legends of the Hidden Temple: The Movie.

I know we sometimes watch Iron Chef in the preshow, so I'd like to just take this opportunity to say how much I love Iron Chef. I first saw it on Food Network several years ago. I especially like the dubbing. They do such a good job of conveying the comradery between the commentators and shows just how much fun they are having. And then there's the puns and clever wordplay. It's cheesy, but I can't help but smile. Now I'm talking about the original run of the show. I've seen a reboot or another country's attempt to make their own version here and there, but in my opinion they never capture the magic the original show had.

Well, the entire movie was basically an obstacle course. Three kids get lost in the Hidden Temple, then run around and solve puzzles and deal with dangers.

The use of the show's ideas and themes was a mixture of corny and clever, but mostly corny.

I found it to be good stupid fun, though, and wasn't bored even once, which is a pretty big compliment to give any movie, even a bad one.

Tuesday night is gonna be spectacularly batshit, but tonight we'll take things a bit easier with a film about a teenage goth girl who discovers an antique mirror that grants her "black magic power" that enables her to exact vengeance on her tormenters. Just the type of movie Jack Chick wouldn't want you to see!

Starring the mysterious actress Rainbow Harvest (apparently, that is her real name), who appeared in a handful of film and TV roles in her late teens and early twenties before giving up on acting entirely around 1991, and Karen Black (who we last saw being tormented by a devil doll) as the goth girl's widowed mother.

Here is Mirror Mirror...

[up]Because I'm busy tonight.

Anyway, we got episodes of Street Sharks and Gamesmaster (WHO will be victorious in the grand virtual soccer battle between Vinnie Joes and John Barnes? I'm the only person dying to find out!)

Then, at the top of the coming hour, it's goth girls, black magic, and demonic control in Mirror Mirror.

Holy shit.

When looking up reviews on Mirror Mirror, I discovered who the writers are.

Annette Cascone and Gina Cascone.

Don't know those names? They're the creators of Deadtime Stories, one of the corny kids' horror series we watched in preshows.

Huh. That's a neat little fact.

[up] S'kay, we understand. So, as Christmas approaches, what rendition of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol are we riffing on this year? The 1938 one starring John Barrymore as Scrooge, the 2009 one with Jim Carry as Scrooge, The Three Spirits, Bob Hopkins, and Gary Oldman as Bob Cratchit, Mr. Magoo.'s Christmas Carol or Mickey's Christmas Carol as preshow material, Bill Murray's Scrooged, or the anvillicious, yet still timely and powerful A Carol For Another Christmas written by Rod Serling?

[up][up]Finals and term papers and all that, right? We still have Get on the Bus on hand, if you're able to find time to watch a movie on your own.

Anyway, tonight's title and trailer just about speaks for itself, but HOLY SHIT, who pulled together this cast???

  • Barry Bostwick ("Who's Barry Bostwick?") as Franklin Delano Roosevelt—I can't remember seeing him in anything else here since that flying motorcycle ride a the end of 'Megaforce'
  • Ray Wise as Gen. Douglas MacArthur—Hamming it up just like when he was the only worthwhile part of Wrong Cops (   X   )
  • Bruce McGill as... Er, I'm assuming he'll just be playing the "straight man"
  • Kevin Sorbo as ...Abraham Lincoln?!?—That raises the God's Not Dead franchise cast alumni count up to 2
  • Richard Riehle—"Baltimore Orioles... NUMBER ONE!!!!"
  • The guy playing "Werewolf Hitler" was once part of a musical adaptation of 'Re-Animator' with George Wendt

And that's just what catches my eye from the cast list.

Brace yourselves for FDR: American Badass...

[up]Aww, shucks, I'll have to tell you all about it later then, if it goes really, really well. Hope to catch you again tomorrow.

Anyway, first up, we got Street Sharks... Retsupurae... and some other stuff.

Then, at the top of the coming hour... (A sentence that shall live in infamy:) Barry Bostwick is FDR: American Badass.

Well, that certainly was an... unusual... movie last night.

Tonight, though, we're rolling out a past 1980's sci-fi/action/suspense cold war relic with Def-Con 4 ([awesome][awesome][awesome])

"The 'Star Wars' technology of the future becomes the reality of today." Of course, anybody here who remains a die-hard fan of Gymkata should remember that's NOT a direct reference to a goddamn George Lucas movie but to Ronald Reagan's batshit ambition to neutralize Soviet nuclear threat with lasers in outer space. Thirty years later, and this still ain't a reality. Give Donald Trump half a chance, though, and I'm sure he'll resolve to revive the godawful program sometime in the coming months...

I'm home from work, as I had to drive my dad to a hospital, and I'll have to take him again to a doctor's appointment in a few hours. I wish I had time to go for a nice long walk or bike ride or something, move around and stuff. But I'll be called into action soon...

[up]That hospital trip wasn't a serious medical emergency, I hope. Is your dad doing okay?

He has diabetes-related problems with his foot that have really screwed him over. Now he has to wear a cast, and will have surgery next month.

SeanMurrayI Since: Jan, 2010
#17568: Dec 7th 2016 at 4:06:23 PM

[up]So this is more about preliminary visits before that surgery, I take it? Hope all goes well with that going forward. Glad to hear it wasn't a more dire sudden emergency.

Anyway, first up, it's time for another trip through The Crystal Maze, screaming at idiots.

Then, at the top of the coming hour... "the 'Star Wars' technology of the future" becomes the Cold War nightmare from 30 years in the past in Def-Con 4.

Been fond of the epic poem since high school, but anything about the video game it inspired years back and this animated work that was surely inspired by the game in turn is pretty foreign to me, but what the hey?

Let's set our sights on Dante's Inferno: An Animated Epic:

I glanced around the movie some time months ago, and it looked interesting. I notice they're hyping it up as having ties to anime and manga. I looked it up on Wikipedia and there's a lot of Japanese and also Korean names in the credits.

I wonder what it was like to make the movie. Like, what was the process of getting this odd international hodgepodge of designers together to make this? What did those people think of the experience of making something like this?

#17572: Dec 8th 2016 at 3:37:42 PM

Fuck, I gotta call an audible. YouTube uploader made tonight's movie non-embeddable, and I didn't notice this until just now. Entirely my fault, but we'll take another go at this one another day in the very near future.

In the meantime... Can I interest anybody right now in revisiting Christopher Walken in McBain?

How about rewatching that other animated movie that took place in Hell?

Found it! It's called Lady Death.

I really wanted to see the animated Inferno, but this is thematically similar.
