Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

You were just describing every major Italian horror movie in existence. Including Fulci and all the cannibal stuff. Pretentiousness is the name of the game.

Horror Rock Track of the Day: Mister Monster - "Send More Paramedics"

I probably raised this same question when we watched tonight's movie last October, but I'm gonna run through it again, anyway: "What the fuck ever happened to Devon Sawa?"

What a career story. As a child actor in the 1990's, he overcame THAT scene in the live-action Casper movie and managed to show up seemingly everywhere I was looking in the late-90s, early-2000s; many of these works I consider some of my absolute favorites from this period. He re-appeared two years after Casper to share screen time with 90's teen heartthrob Jonathan Taylor Thomas in the "adventure" film Wild America. Then, he followed that up with a scene-stealing turn in the cult indie film SLC Punk hamming it up as Sean the acid flunkie. From there, he was able to transition to noticeable leading roles in tonight's movie and the first of I don't know how many 'Final Destination' films and land the title role in the music video for Eminem's single "Stan." He looked like an actor who was building to something, you know?

...Then he appeared in 2002's Slackers with "Big Pete" from The Adventures of Pete & Pete, Jason Segel and Jason Schwartzman, which bombed so badly, and poor Devon Sawa's career just hasn't quite recovered from that ever since while we're still somehow stuck with Jason Segel. Seriously, what the fuck?

Nevertheless, here tonight for all our enjoyment we have Devon Sawa at the apex of his acting career... playing the role of a stoner slacker with Bruce Campbell's possessed hand, alongside Seth Green, Jessica Alba, Vivica A. Fox, Fred Willard, Connie Ray, Mindy Sterling, The Offspring... and Timothy Stack.

Here is... Idle Hands:

Horror Rock Track of the Day: Argyle Goolsby - "Shadows of Night"

We're lining up a big, big show tonight—not one second worth missing.

First, we'll be diving into the classic black & white X-Files episode "The Post-Modern Prometheus" (very good stuff), and after that our evening's feature presentation comes in the form of one of John Carpenter's absolute best films (certainly in the Top Three, at the very least), the trippy, "Lovecraftian" In the Mouth of Madness, starring Sam Neill, Jurgen Prochnow, Charlton Heston, "Vigo the Carpathian" from Ghostbusters 2, and others.

This one will drive you absolutely MAD...

Remember earlier when I said we'd be watching a great old episode of The X-Files tonight? Well, that's not gonna happen... But we will now finally get to learn what the Devil's favorite flavor of ice cream is, I promise.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, Sam Neill is the World's Greatest Detective in search of Stephen King Garth Marenghi Sutter Cane and getting into a whole lot bigger, trippier mess than he had initial thought in John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness.

Horror Rock Track of the Day: Left for Dead - "Night of the Living Dead"

About time we've gotten around to this one.

We've already seen George A. Romero zombie classics Dawn and Day of the Dead... Heck, we've even seen 1973's The Crazies, but this is the first time we're getting around to the ORIGINAL Night of the Living Dead—not Tom Savini's 1990 remake with pointless false scares, not that even more pointless 2006 remake shot in 3D.

And what a treat that should be.

I've been rewatching The Iron Giant in my spare time. Got it paused around 40 minutes in since Monday.

It's a nice little movie. Simple. Animated in a retro 1950s Warner Bros. style, which is a great touch.

Everything in 3D is shit, because 3D is a pointless gimmick that serves almost no purpose, and what little purpose it could serve is defeated by idiot directors who think all you have to do to effectively use 3D is throw something at the audience, like we weren't already tired of that shit when they stopped scaring people in theaters with films of trains going past the camera. We figured this shit out in the fucking 1800s but directors just don't get it yet.

[up]It wasn't the original film transcribed into 3D. It's an entirely different film altogether.

And the film is dreadful. Terrible effects, cheap productions, poor acting, poor pacing, poor cinematography... it's a shit film.

I'm sure it was. All I need to know about it is that it's 3D. Could care less if it's an adaptation, or a remake, or an update, or a remaster, or a sequel, or a prequel, or an interquel, or a totally different and unrelated movie altogether.

If it's 3D, there's a 98% chance it's shit irrespective of anything else about it.

And the remaining 2% of good 3D movies would be just as good without the 3D.

[up]Yeah. I don't even understand why the gimmick rose from obscurity in the first place. It just feels so archaic.

It's like the William Castle gimmicks coming back again (except at least Castle was creative).

Hey guys, sorry I haven't posted here in a while.

My grandpa's been in the hospital since Sunday and, unfortunately, went critical this morning. My folks and I are scrambling for when the worst comes, so I'll probably be away for another long while. I'll stick around tonight, though.

The 3D film came back for the same reason it started in the first place: To distinguish the movie theater from television and home media.

Sadly, there will likely never be another producer with William Castle's reputation again. Castle "excelled" and made a name for himself in an age where movie prints were sparser and travelled from town-to-town and played fewer theaters, so Castle's best-known gimmicks would practically be tailor-made for each specific venue his movies would be shown at.

It's easy to park an ambulance outside a theater as insurance in case anybody "dies of fright" watching his movie if the film is only playing at that one theater. Now imagine a studio doing that at hundreds of theaters across the United States on a summer weekend.

Anyway, we got a great episode of The X-Files lined up here: "The Post-Modern Prometheus".

Then, at the top of the coming hour, it's Night of the Living Dead

Though 3D has made significant advancements in the past few years compared to the nausea-inducing red-and-blue glasses days of yore. I find it cool how some 3D movies like certain Marvel projects (Ant Man, Guardians of the Galaxy) try to give a larger sense of depth perception in addition to the pop-in-your-face "Look, I'm 3D!" effects that are known for the medium. I saw Ant Man in 3D, and I never knew a shot of a hallway with a single ray of sun to look so pretty.

You may recall a couple years back a writers union strike that briefly halted TV show production and forced TV hosts like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert to write their own material as the matter resolved.

A previous union strike in 1981 similarly halted Hollywood media production in such a way that major studios like Paramount were compelled to find low-budget, non-union work to distribute in place of more conventional Hollywood fare.

One the best remembered films to find a mainstream audience and save itself from total obscurity during this time was tonight's film, Student Bodies. (Consequently, several people who worked on this who WERE part of the Screen Actors Guild or other professional unions are credited under pseudonyms—including a producer credit for "Alan Smithee"—so as not to avoid the wrath of the Writers Guild or their cause).

The trailer below is absolute SHIT and somehow manages to ruin a few of the movie's decent jokes (not a great first impression at all to the uninitiated), but anybody who has been around here long enough (and I pretty much mean since the very beginning) knows that this film has cult classic and comedy gold all over it.

It's a celebration of rubber gloves, plastic bags, paper clips, horse head bookends, the MPAA R-rating, Malvert "The Stick", on-screen body counts and so much more...

Forgot to name a "Horror Rock Track of the Day" in my earlier haste.

For what it's still worth: Eerie Von - "The Perfect Criminal"

Anyway, tonight, we near the premature end of Brimstone', before FOX quickly pulled the plug on it.

And, at the top of the coming hour, we revisit the the most under-appreciated spoof film ever made... the old Coven favorite Student Bodies', starring... nobody, really.

Horror Rock Track of the Day: Nim Vind - "Killing Saturday Night"

Not a lot of people caught tonight's movie the first time we ran it last September, but it sure left a resounding impression on everybody who was able to see it.

Director Brian Yuzna goes "Cronenbergian" in Society, and that sort of description is all anybody should need to give this entire film away.
