....if Zoelik, Goer and Dagarm had ever been in the same room, the Ham would have made the universe implode.

Also, I kinda have the impression, Gatlantis ships are basically Fragile Speedsters. Their rotating turrets give them a high rate of fire, but they seem to be about as tough as a Gamillan Destroyer (meaning they explode if someone sneezes hard at them)

Also, I still kinda hope for another season. Its not like Gatlantis is in any way done. The fact that the Emperor is still around just kinda smells like a Sequel Hook

Just an idea

[up] And interesting idea and certainly not one without potential. Yamato did find several (potentially) habitable worlds on its way to Iscandar. Finding that many on the way to another galaxy suggests that looking closer to home in the Milky Way is not beyond the realms of possibility. Plus the idea of getting all of humanity's eggs out of one basket (much like the colonisation drive in Macross)

Speaking of the second movie (I have a friend who is willing to import them and they do have English subtitles), watching that I've come to a conclusion. For all it's terrifying, destructive power the Wave Motion Gun isn't that big a game changer. The real game changer is the Wave Motion Shield. Yamato's Shock Cannons are capable of one-shotting anything short of the frontal armour of a Gamilan Dreadnoght and Gatlantean ships seen to be even more lightly armoured given that her AA guns were capable of turning a Gatlantean battleships hull into swiss cheese. With the Wave Motion Shield though Yamato was able to shrug off several direct hits making her one of the toughest things around.

If Earth ever gets around to building their own ships, if they're capable of reproducing the shields, forget big battleships like the Andromeda, smaller escorts armed only with Shock Cannons would probably be enough to give equal or better numbers of Gamilan or Gatlantean ships a sound thrashing.

Depends on if the smaller units can generate Wave Motion Energy in sufficient quantity to create a shield. Miniaturization might take a long while to work its way, especially since the humans didn't invent the Wave Motion Generator in the first place.

They build it by plans, not by true and full understanding. So for the foreseeable future all WM-Systems will be derivative of Yamato's and probably not truly innovative.

Not to mention that the Gamillans were able to reverse engineer a Wave Motion Gun pretty fast, so eventually getting their own Wave Motion Shield is not that unfeasible.

And again, I got the strong impression that compared to Gamillan ships, Gatlanteans are Glass Cannon s. Remember how Domelaze III basically tanked shock cannon fire and Yamato needed to be up close and knife range for it to have effect? And the Gatlantis ships rather sniped her sister ship from afar with their super weapon rather than go in close.

Basically, all of Gatlantis seems to build their ships on Destroyer Patterns: Guns and fuck armor.

And yes, Yamato racks up a pretty high list of downed enemies, but the mass of it is made out of Destroyers. And in Destroyer vs Battleship, the Battleship is always going to win.

Btw for my RP idea I envision 4 major factions in space:

- Earth, the newcomers. The one who blackened Desslers eye. Gives a lot of credit with some species, but others remember the last time a species used Wave Motion Guns in war. Powerful in quality, but still a bit weak on quantity.

- Gamillan Empire, the core of the infrastructure and stuff. Probably the faction that as Wave Motion Shields too at this point. Biggest faction in numbers, but weakened by the war and reforms and fear of a counter-putsch. Still possess the largest fleet by far.

- Gamillas Dessler Loyalists, ie splinter groups, opportunists, Warlords, "Zoelik was Right!" people. Probably still using older-ships ie what they left with in 2199. Smallest factions individually, but numerous

- Gatlantis, trying to use every opportunity of the weakened Empire to advance their own. Less advanced faction, but aggressive and numerous.

[up]

Wasn't it a plot point during the second season of the old Yamato series that Humanity was slowly retaking their old colonies in the wake of the destabilization caused by Dessler's defeat? And they were left alone for a while after that if I recall, before the Galmans (who we likely won't see, as they've been folded into the Gamilas empire in 2199) and Comet Empire came knocking.

[up] Well 2199 pretty strongly states that Humanity had never left the Solar System in person before the Yamato set off.

Depends on if the smaller units can generate Wave Motion Energy in sufficient quantity to create a shield. Miniaturization might take a long while to work its way, especially since the humans didn't invent the Wave Motion Generator in the first place.

It's not really an issue of miniturisation if you think on it. Leaving aside the issue of the Wave Motion Core (which is the real question), it's probably quite a simple matter to build a copy of the Yamato's power plant (which was human built, if not designed) into a much smaller hull. The Wave Motion Gun itself takes up a huge chunk of internal volume and then there's the hanger space for a squadron of Cosmo Falcons, two Cosmo Zeros and another three auxilliary craft (plus their assorted supplies and launch equipment). That's a lot of volume that could be discarded when designing/building a smaller unit.

The real issue is of course copying the Wave Motion Core but given how tiny the original is, a terrestrial made copy with a thousand fold increase in volume still wouldn't take up that much extra room. (That would still put it at about three metres long and a maximum diameter of a meter at a very rough estimate)

Concerning the English release of 2199...Voyager Entertainment dropped the ball. Off the Burj Khalifa. They tested a dub (first two episodes only), which didn't go anywhere. They were probably looking for a TV release. Then they decided, hey, let's release the show in four episode sets for 40-50$ each...and then gave up at four sets, so they only reached episode 16. All sub-titles only. While calling it Starblazers 2199, in order to appeal, apparently, to the people who watched the original series back in the 70s/80s.

Here's the thing though. Voyager isn't a licensing company like Funimation or Sentai or even Aniplex USA. They're actually the Japanese distribution company. They basically tried a Japanese style release, which flopped hard due to no advertising whatsoever and a release pattern that people over here really don't like. Voyager hasn't even bother trying to get a streaming release of it. It really sucks, and it's really obvious that Voyager has no idea what they're doing.

(*Dusts off thread*)

Well, I've been doing a rewatch marathon of Yamato 2199 and while watching episode 20 ("Under a Rainbow Sun", a.k.a.: The Battle of the Rainbow Cluster), I noticed a familiar young woman on the bridge (screencaps below):

Mikage Kiryu, is that you? Note

If that's indeed her, then I guess she qualifies as an Ascended Extra as well. But just to be on the safe side, can anyone who's good at Japanese check the cast list of episode 20 to see if Eriko Nakamura's name is listed in there?

EDIT: P.S.: Apologies to anyone expecting new news on the show.

Having watched the original series before this, and I have this to ask: Any reason why they didn't make Analyzer a pervert anymore?

Probably because this was as much for the old fans and they were counting on the nostalgia factor coupled with its theatrical style release that a specific comedy relief character like that not being needed.

More news and a new trailer for the Yamato 2202 hype machine:

Those smexy black Gamilas super-dreadnoughts... Also, I see the names "Ticonderoga" (based on the Ticonderoga-class missile cruiser, no doubt) and (what I assume to be) "Iroquois" on a couple of the EDF ships.

Ooh, shinies.

That said, as pointed in the Animesuki thread about the series, I'm wondering how the more "modern" Yamato tackles the Comet Empire arc. Because in the original, it's the part where the named cast starts dropping like flies.

[up] It's entirely possible for it to go in a different direction this time around. As a friend who has seen the second season informed me, Earth and its forces didn't know about the Comet Empire/Gatlantis but this time around where as thanks to the Ark of the Stars movie, Yamato has already met them and kicked the ass of one of their fleets.

And good lord are their ships ridiculously under-armoured. Yamato turned one of their destroyers into swiss cheese using their AA guns.

Actress/singer Sayaka Kanda joins Yamato 2202 cast, a new 30-second trailer, plus a more detailed synopsis of the film.

Holy shit, that Andromeda looks awesome... Also, the Gamillans have some sort of countermeasure for the Magna Flame Cannon, but isn't quite effective.

Also, Yamato 2202 will be released on Amazon Video? Well, that's one other good reason to get an Amazon Prime account—besides The Grand Tour and The Man in the High Castle. [lol] (Unless that's Japan-only, of course...sad)

Another PV by the way:

Looks like the Andromeda was made as a joint Gamilas-Terran project this time around.

And another one:

Well now, it looks like we've got a HUGE Combined Fleet battle with the Gamilas and Terrans allied against the Comet Empire. It's a far cry from how the second season of Yamato started (for reference, the Yamato was jumped by Cometine scouts during a relatively quiet patrol of the outer Solar System), for sure.
