His eyes opened.

"About time you woke up, champ," a cheerful voice replied.

Champ? What's going on? Oh yeah. I dueled that Lswarm guy in the finals. Don't know what exactly happened then, but...

"I see," Regulus replied. "How long was I out?"

"A full day," the reply came back. "However, we have a situation. Oh, and your father dropped by. He's got the cards you were asking him for."

"Great," Regulus said, "I guess I'll go see him."

"Later. You have to know this now."

Roxas smiled and leaned back in his chair.

"Thanks for the offer, but I don't feel like hiding. There doesn't seem to be much of a point to it, you know."

Jacques grew nervous after hearing Art and Marcus. "Killing? Yeah no. Not happening." He turned to the headmaster. "I don't know about you, but I am less scared of your cultists than those two who are ready to kill people."

Avrum looked at Marcus and Art like they were lunatics. He massaged his brow and wished that Ptolemys Messier 7 could be of more use right now.
"Please take this seriously," he said. "This is not a matter for laughs. Or morbid jokes. Anyway, to address a point Art brought up: my contacts tell me that it might be possible, either via appropriated technology, or through less plausible means."
He turned to Roxas. "You don't have a choice in the matter. This is as much for the safety of the rest of the student body as it is for you."
He rubbed his chin. "I hope this is just a false positive, though it does not seem so. But we can't take any chances. Not when lives are potentially in stake."
"Don't worry, kids," Sophia said. "I'm coming with you. I won't let anything happen to you, and I'll do my best so we'll be able to trust our guards."
"Now, if you don't have any more questions..." Avrum got up and opened the door. Behind it stood a man in IDF fatigues.◊ He saluted. "I am Master Sargent Cohen. Please follow me," he said.

Sigmund sighed "Why oh why does this always happen? It'd be a miracle if one of these places could get through the year with nothing like this. I think I migh need a drink at some point in the near future."

He saluted the soldier "Greetings to you sir." With a smirk muttered "Totally called it."

Peter looked at the man expressionlessly. He was still concerned about Regulus, and quite agreed with Roxas' about the idea of a guard.

His father's travels had occasionally taken Peter through places where those in charge had thought it would be best to give Dr. Agnew a military escort. Peter's father had considered these entourages an annoyance at the best of times, and Peter had inherited the attitude from him. He therefore had many fond memories of setting up traps and pranks for those unfortunate enough to be given the job of guarding him against non-existant enemies.

So, as he moved follow the Sargent, his mind was almost automatically starting to think of ways he could escape his watch. Beyond his general dislike of solders, Peter kind of wanted to see what this cult was like.

Denero’s eyes flashed red as the Meteor took over once again.

“Wrong answer teach, we’re not moving till you tell us why some cultists are after us, or is there something you’re hiding from us”

"Yeah, I agree with this guy." Daniel stepped over to where Denero was and stood firmly beside him. "This is completely out of nowhere. I demand a better explanation."

"And whats to stop him from simply lying to us?" Marcus pointed out. "He has already avoided answering any and all important questions. I agree that we need more information but this is not a reliable source."

Caramon nodded.

"Given the track record for these sorts of things, then the stakes we are going to inevitably be pushed into will most likely involve our souls being placed in danger, and if that's going to happen, I'd like to know exactly what sort of danger I'm risking. Of course, given the danger, I'm not opposed to protection, but there will almost certainly be at least one breach in security, perhaps via a traitor or something, and I'd like to know what I could be going up against if said breach targets me. I'm sure others feel the same way."

"I agree. It seemed somewhat like he dismissed Marcus and my convictions as jokes, somehow, as if this were somehow a laughable situation, as if jokes could be made here. They're not. This is not a time for jokes, or for believing one another to be crazy in any way. This is a crazy situation, so it calls for solutions outside the normal. And I do agree with Denero, I believe we are owed a slightly more thorough explanation."

Art felt the card in his deck tugging at his mind again, Very well said. This could be an exciting scenario, pending on what he chooses to reveal next.

"I think the problem here is that you guys are so convinced this is real," said Jacques with a yawn. "What do you guys think this is; a TV show?"

I'm far too tired to deal with this crap...

Caramon gave Jacques a blank look. "And Regulus having some sort of Duel-Spirit infection in the middle of a tournament match isn't messed up enough? This is a Duelist School. Weird stuff to some degree is required to happen. And in either case, if there are people who want to do something to us, which given their apparent goal of attempting to resurrect some Egyptian serpent thing, previous attempts to resurrect giant mythical beasts suggest that they need us to sacrifice in some way. Which is bad, and I'd rather not have happen to me."

Jacques shrugged. "Look, I get that Duel Monsters comes with some bizarreissues. But you cannot look me in the eyes and tell me that some weirdos worshipping some giant magical snake thing has any reason to target us specifically. Maybe Regulus since he has magical poison or whatever. You, me, the rest of us? Outside of dueling, we have nothing in common."

Jacques paused to massage his forehead. "I have already been skipping out on some much needed sleep time..."

Caramon shrugged.

"You're right, it doesn't make sense. But can you point any ancient Egyptian god-worshiping cults whose methods for achieving goals make sense?"

"Well, yes actually." Marcus said "Their goals may not be logical, but their methods likely will be."

"And Jacques?" Gol'Gar said " You have a TALKING ROBOT KING living inside your head. I'd say that disqualifies you from any right to scepticism."

"Besides" the alien creature said smugly, this time addressing the whole room "I already have a theory why they're targeting you."

Sigmund spoke up at Gol'Gar's statment "You do? Do share it wih the rest of us if you don't mind." He spoke up fom beside the soldier "I don't like the thouht of any of you lot getting injured or killed."

At Simund's exclusion of himself Freed snarled. He then said "Anyway as my friend here said something like this has happened at duel academy happened four times in the space of a few years and just LOOK at yugi moto kid delt with more stuff than most would believe. THIS is not new. And over your time here you will have to dal with stuff like this all the time. Better get used to it now."

Sigmund reiterated what freed said so that everyone could here.

Jacques looked a little confused at Sigmund talking to Marcus as if he proposed he knew something. After Sigmund had relayed Freed's point though, Jacques went back to being tired and frustrated. "Look, we all know about Yugi Moto and all that. Last I checked, he had some sort of weird Egyptian necklace with super powers or something."

Jacques took a moment to shoot a venomous glare at the guards escorting them. "I've lived through some tough times before by myself, so this isn't anything new. But I am not doing it when I cannot be wide awake. Sleepy people make mistakes and if this nonsense about psycho cultists is true, then I sure as hell don't want to make any mistakes."

"Exactly, trouble seems to be drawn to duelists." Sigmund thought for a moment "Bout you are ight we all should go on our way and go to sleep that way we can deal with this properly."

Caramon sighed as Duel Spirits most likely entered the conversation.

"Then we should go with the presumably well-meaning soldiers, get some sleep, and then work stuff out later."

Roxas nodded.

"You're right, I forgot to consider that other people might get hurt. Let's go."

"Well before you all get to sleep, alow me to explain" Gol'Gar said.

You're showing off, aren't you?

Gol'Gar spoke allowed once more.

"As it has been established, these cultists are trying to physically embody a creature of legend, that means that they're going to need to have a connection with the creature world. They're not after YOU specifically, rather you fit the TYPE of duelist they're looking for. Almost everyone of you is gifted with a duel spirit, which will allow them to initiate a "Shadow Game" against you. Interaction between our world and yours carries with it some fairly strict rules, one of which is that certain boons and powers from our world will only work if won during a "Shadow Game". THAT'S why they need to duel you, without both players having duel spirits, a Shadow game cannot be initiated and thus, even if they beat or kill you, they won't obtain whatever it is they need. The cultists are not specifically targeting YOU, they're targeting this academy, whose students are reputed to carry duel spirits."

"However." Marcus spoke up this time "This does give us an oppurtunity. In a shadow duel, the players are using the actual monsters spirits, that means that if we summon our spirit partners we risk having them destroyed, but the same holds true for the cultists. If we can identify their spirit partners, trick them into summoning them, and them destroy them, they would instantly lose their spirit partners, and thus any connection to the spirit world. Which means they would no longer be able to use shadow duels, and thus would no longer be a threat."

Caramon raised his hand in the air, with the air of one who had only been told half of the story, and was severely annoyed by it.

"Two things. Firstly, what the hell was said prior to you" He pointed at Marcus "speaking, and how exactly does my complete and utter lack of one impact your theory at all? And for that matter, how do Duel Spirits relate to these shadow duels?"

Sigmund agreed with Caramon, "He's right, Not every one here has a duel spirit. Then there are also instances where people without duel spirits have had shadow games. They may have had manifestations of their soul in monster form but no duel spirit. Mai Valentine being one such example."

He sighed "Now let's get going already."

Catching sight of the officer’s hand moving towards his baton, Denero retook control of his body.

I may want answers, but I don’t want to get my head caved in to get them, we’ll find out what’s going on our own

As he turned to follow the soldier he heard Marcuse’s Duel spirit’s “explanation”
