Let's talk about stuff that's tearing up the Billboard charts and contemporary hits radio stations!

I am really digging "Give Your Heart a Break" by Demi Lovato! It's a totally sweet song with a nice melody and it gets into a somewhat complicated interpersonal relationship that most love songs don't touch on (also I can relate to the lyrics)

Are Gotye and fun. still at the top of the charts? And has "Call Me Maybe" dropped out of the top ten yet?

[up]Gotye, fun, and "Call Me Maybe" are all still at the top.

I've actually genuinely liked a few songs on the top 40 recently. The new David Guetta song is alright for a couple minutes. "Glad You Came" is also pretty nice.

"Call Me Maybe" just got to #1 a week or two ago, the other two are in the top ten still, if not the top three.

[up]I really like Gotye just because he stands out from all the other top 40 songs, and he sounds a little like Sting. I also like everything Adele sings, "Rumour Has It" is the current top 40 from her. I do admit to liking "Drive By" by Train.

I'm not overly fond of Top 40 music, but I did find some to be pretty good. Gotye is one of them and fun. isn't bad either. I think Neon Trees is still on there. "Drive By"... I like Train, but it's not one of their stronger songs (It's okay). It's no "Hey, Soul Sister" and it's certainly no "Meet Virginia".

And then of course we have songs like "Sexy and I Know It" still playing at my local Top 40 radio station, and I have an immense loathing for it. To elaborate, I mostly find it obnoxious. Fortunately, not a whole lot of songs actually do piss me off like this, and most of the Top 40 hits are harmless enough.

"Sexy and I Know it", while I don't really like it per se, I will admit to having grown on me and me not really caring about it either way anymore.

"Hey, Soul Sister" is one of my least favorite songs that I've ever heard and "Drive-By" I find pretty great, weirdly enough.

"Sexy and I Know It" is a decent tune but I'm tired of it being used as a punchline (i.e. the M&Ms Super Bowl commercial)

"Somebody That I Used To Know" is pretty excellent, actually, and nothing I've heard by Adele has been subpar. So that's nice. The fun. track is a bit flat compared to their other work, though, if less overtly Queen-ish, though it's nice to see some variety up there.

Oddly I don't hate "Call Me Maybe". I think it's just because I've only heard it once, as opposed to hearing it all over the place. It's an incredibly silly song, but I think it kind of captures shallow adolescent crushes well, and I assume that's the intention.

I remember thinking Nate Reuss' previous band, The Format, could have gotten way bigger than they did, so I think it's pretty cool that "We Are Young" blew up like it did.

I don't have a radio in my car, and am rarely compelled to listen to the radio in general, so I'm not really in touch with Top 40.

I do like Train, though.

Anyone heard Karmin - "Brokenhearted"? I think could be a fine pop song since it has a really good chorus but the singer has these random lines where she's trying to be Cher Lloyd or Nicki Minaj or something (especially the "uh huh, that's right, cheerio" and the entire bridge) and it feels really weird just dropped in a normal white-girl power-pop song like that.

I still like it, but provisionally.

EDIT: Oh, they started out as one of those annoying groups on You Tube that covered rap songs ironically. That is perhaps the least surprising thing I've heard ever.

And Mues (who is probably the most hipster internet reviewer ever) really liked them pre-"Brokenhearted", so what does that tell us? [lol]

That stupid "cheerio" thing always annoys me too, but for what reason I don't know. Maybe it's because I'm sick of quirkiness for the sake of quirkiness. That's part of why I don't like most of Fall Out Boy's stuff.

Adele irritates me. It must have been because my local raio station played her 2 breakout hits 5 TIMES AN HOUR.

I like Train, their stuff is always full of energy. Drive-By is a little stale, but by god does it beat Adele 5 times an hour.

I didn't know Neon Trees suddenly became popular. I was never the biggest fan of the band, but say what you will, I really like this.

I like "Somebody that I used to Know". I've also heard excellent covers of it. Also, "We Are Young" is a pretty fun song (get it?). I also am a big fan of Drake.

"Call Me Maybe" is starting to be really catchy and I am starting to like it. Same thing happened earlier with "Drive By" and last year it was Katy Perry's "Supernatural." It's all the time spent in my 2004 van with just a radio. I need upbeat music when driving.

As of now, nothing on the top 40s has really caught my attention. The only exception being "Call Me Maybe", but only because it's so effing catchy.

2010 was really the last year the pop charts really took off for me. "Magic" by B.o.B ft. Rivers Cuomo is pretty much one of the most fun rap songs I've heard in a long time, we were given "We R Who We R" by Ke$ha amongst others, Taylor Swift gave me "Mean", the only song by her that I liked, and Katy Perry was at her peak.

Everything after that, save for Mumford & Sons and Adele, really has lacked luster.

Odd1- Yes, E.T., Extraterrestrial, whatever the heck it was called. The one that was played about a hundred times a day last year. smile

ETA: I'm also liking everything Maroon 5 does. Now it's "Pay Phone."

Mumford and Sons had a pop hit? I know they had those two big songs, but I never knew they were pop hits.

Also, oddly, my mom has really gotten into Maroon 5.

They did in the southern states. I turned on top 40 several months ago because I had friends in the car, and lo and behold, there was Little Lion Man.

To be honest, the only places I've heard or heard of them were last year's Grammy's and a mention of "The Cave" during a Runaway Guys video.

[up][up] I know we are living in a post-"Fuck You" world, but I'm still slightly surprised "Little Lion Man" got that big considering the word "fucked" is so prominently placed in the chorus - though of course the only station I've heard it on renders that line "I really [static]-ed it up this time".
