Real Life section maintenance

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need a crowner vote.

As per Real Life Troping, we never trope unscripted real life sports — so sports tropes where RL examples would only apply to those scenarios don't need a crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

It looks like Replacement Scrappy has met the requirements for being listed as NRLEP, and since it was up for most of this week with several "pending" notices the weekend extension doesn't apply. Added 23rd May '17 at 04:25:31 PM, 5.5:1 (13)

Wait, there were actually Real Life examples for Replacement Scrappy?? That...seems like misuse. And if not that, a controversy magnet (though not sure the crowner's accurate).

Redemption Rejection has a Real Life section.

I'd like somebody to express their opinion on it and maybe we should make it NRLEP for being a morality trope.

Maybe could be in the list, although Heel–Face Door-Slam, a similar trope, seems worse.

I would highly recommend them both to be on the crowner.

RE: Redemption Rejection: That section seems really small to be making NRLEP... Anyways, the Blackbeard example probably fits better under folklore or something. It doesn't seem unethical to call Blackbeard a bad guy. It's Blackbeard we're talking about. The other example is not an example. The soldier wasn't acting as a villain in any sense of the term but rather he made a mistake and tried to make up for it (in a naive way, sure). So... [tdown]

What's this about Replacement Scrappy not being within the same universe? I must be misunderstanding the trope...

[up]No, just the crowner. It just means that it's about the audience disliking a replacement character - not the other characters - so it's not possible in real life.

Ah, that makes sense...Yeah, real life doesn't have an "audience" per se.

About the soldier example in Redemption Rejection: I think it is an example, at least from the military's point of view. By deserting, the soldier acted as a villain (of course, from a pacifist standpoint, he didn't). He was offered three chances to redeem himself by going back to the front, which he refused.

That's an issue about whether "villain" refers to someone who's morally evil, or legally a criminal. In this case, I think it's about villains, considering the trope is about redemption. In most cases, after the sentence (or whatever the verdict is), there's nothing more to it. There's no "redemption" involved, unless you involve moral factors.

From the military point of view, a deserter really is acting in an evil way, acting to preserve his own hide at the expense of his comrades and his country, and in the case of WWII actually helping the Nazis; and going back to the front can redeem said evil.

I'm not saying that view is right, mind you, or that it's my personal view. It's certainly not unproblematic. But it's a point of view which makes the soldier an example of the trope.

That said, I think the example should go, precisely because it is calling a real person evil. I voted for making the trope NRLEP, in fact.

EDITED: Which makes the whole question moot, I guess. Anyway, the debate about the morality of desertion does not belong here and I don't intend to pursue it.

Chiming in on Heel-Face Door Slam to note that "Heel" and "Face" are narrative terms; voted based on "requires a narrative".

[up][up]If you add, "from a certain point of view", anyone and everyone can be painted as evil. And that's calling real people evil. The guideline I go after is, "Not even Hitler." The moment it's about any kind of morality, from any point of view, it crosses the line.

Hey Nohbody. I just wanted to ask, you know those Real Life subpages you redirected to their parent trope pages because they had too many inbounds to just cutlist when the tropes were made NRLEP?

Do I know them as in remember which ones? Not off the top of my head, but with a bit of digging they can be found in this thread, when discussed for inclusion on the crowner. I'm about to head to bed after I take care of current business in this thread, though.

Anyway, there hasn't been any change on the two active crowner entries since this morning, and they've met all the requirements, so calling them.

Well, I remember ones like PetTheDog.Real Life and OhCrap.Real Life and they both ended up being cutlisted anyway by a troper named Super King 93.

He also cutlisted many other redirected Real Life subpages.

I was wondering if we should contact him about it and explain to him about the inbounds being the reason for their redirection.

Well, cut pages still require staffer attention, so maybe they decided that "lots of inbounds" wasn't enough of a reason to not cut. I don't know either way, have kinda cut back on working on the "behind the scenes" stuff outside of this thread so I don't closely follow TVT policy any more.

With the coding that automatically makes the page "we don't have a page named exactly "X" maybe you were looking for one of these: " there are a lot of bad pages we don't need to keep for the inbounds anymore. — namespacing issues, primarily, but also for Real Life pages that no longer exist.

I had cut requests of wrong Main/ namespaces denied because of the inbounds.
