By the way: What about the PM mailbox? Would limiting the space you have available there count as "cutting features"?

Programming and surgery have a lot of things in common: Don't start removing colons until you know what you're doing.

Herald and Engineer badges are on the left. Supposedly, any other badge would be on the right to avoid confusion.

[up][up][up]Of courcecool

Anyway, unless anyone has a new idea or wants to talk about the lesser-discussed options, I think it is time we sit back and wait to see what the mods/Fast Eddie decide to do. All that is left for the avatar and badge ideas is the go/no go and the details (which is what Eddie is probably working on right now).

EDIT: Added this to my list;

  • How to pay for these items

Note that none of the details are finalized.

I think they are already self deleting. I do not have any PMs past 16th Mar '11 (though maybe it's not by date but by number of them...), the last three are a cut-off end of a conversation.

Edit: PMed myself for a test, one more old message disappeared. Looks like it is by number of letters in the box.

P Ms aren't auto deleted. There's just a limit on how many will display. Adannor: If you delete two, you'll see the one that just disappeared reappear, along with one more.

We should have no problem taking bitcoins.

I didn't like the idea of selling pins for avatars. We'll just make that one of the Premium Features listed earlier which is enabled with a one time donation of $20.

The two summaries didn't mention additional emoticons. I'd say that would be a one time payment as well for an extended bundle of emoticons. Sorry, there will still be no animated emoticons.

I could live with a 24x24 badge size.

I don't like the idea of badges that solely and explicitly identify people as donors because again, it might encourage they or others to treat it as "this person's opinions are more important" which could go badly in, say, TRS.

^^^ You know, I'm starting to wonder if that isn't just pessimistic speculation. At worst, maybe a newcomer might have that preconception, but I imagine the regulars can tell the difference between someone who actually knows what they're talking about and just some clueless guy with a shiny.

If a big donor likes a broken name, that doesn't make it any less broken. If a big donor likes a captioned face, that doesn't make it any more illustrative. I don't think it would be good for people in TRS or IP or Wiki Talk to say "well, I gave $X, so we should do it my way" when their way is actually bad.

Disable them in workshop areas, then?

Special award badges should show, though.

Why would people think that? A shiny badge means you gave enough money, not that you suddenly have a better opinion.

^Some people think that the mere fact that in same three month they and another guy spend on a forum, they managed to get thrice more post count, makes them better.

We are still on the internet, that sort of people may still exist in here too. Hidden, for the time being.

Turns out not everyone in the world is as nice, as sensible, as humble as Lu127 (or Hershele Ostropoler), is the issue.

Funny thing about being humble, if you have to say that you are, you aren't really. tongue

Joking aside, I like to think the kind of people that would go out of their way to repair tropes would be a little smarter than that.

Regardless of whether the donor is a productive TRS or IP worker, they're still giving real money to this wiki. I don't see how giving donors recognition could possibly be a bad thing. I also don't think anyone's going to mistake a "I support this madhouse financially" badge as "this guy is more important than everyone else because he has disposable income and a generous nature."

@Eddie: I used "smilies" not emoticons. Changed because that is a better word

Putting a limit on avatars/charging for extra slots, badges, "pinning" avatars, additional text options, and "other/less discussed items" are the ideas we have seriously discussed from the time when I started following the thread. These topics have come down to:

  • Avatars
    • Number of free/number you can buy
      • Most think one page (40 avatars) is plenty for free
      • Pruchasing 1 additional page at a time
      • Pruchasing unlimited avatars
    • $ per purchase
      • $5 per page
      • $?? for unlimited ($30 had no real objections)
    • How often you are charged for the extra avatars
      • Current ad removal is 4 months, so...
  • Badges
    • Mod-given
      • (needs list of reasons)
    • Purchased for own use
      • Hey! I hang out in _____ forum!
      • Seasonal
      • Other (interest and personaity related come to mind)
    • Purchased to give to someone else
      • I really like the service to the forum you have provided. Here is a badge/cookie to show my appreciation.
      • Linked to the giver (so everyone know who gave the person a badge) or just totaled?
    • Prices
      • one time purchase
      • $10 for 5
    • Special badges for general donations of $X amount
    • Badge galery
    • Can only display 2
  • Pinning avatars
  • Additional text options
    • Access to the full hexadesimal collor options
    • Additional text formats/fonts
    • No prices discussed
  • Other
    • More/Custom emoticons
    • Colored usernames
    • Different backgrounds
    • Other reasons for people to earn free badges.
    • How to pay for these items

Note that none of the details are finalized.

Also, no curent functionality/options will be removed if at all possible (with the exemption of unlimited avatars).

Fast Eddie's thoughts/what he is looking at (as far as the people without acess to the super-secret-mod-foumtm know)

  • Have a one-time, $20 fee for pinning avatars.
  • The $5 per-page of avatars
  • Badges that can be bought to be given to other tropers

If anyone tries lording it over others because they have a badge, the mods can thwap him with the humility stick.

I'd say give it a chance before borrowing trouble.

You know, if someone starts to lord a bought badge over someone else, it's always possible to temporarily strip that user of the right to display their badge - kind of like an Edit Ban, but less extensive. The badges are a privelige, not a right to be an asshole.
